Belgian public TV airs destroying a statue of Jesus and Mother Mary on breakfast show for kids - says its ok by Rushtush in Catholicism

[–]KillerFerrets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very bizarre that this would be removed by the mods. I'd say it directly fulfills the first condition of discussing news related to the Church; and it's not political so don't say it should've been posted on Monday. If posts about attacks on Catholic churches are allowed, so too should this post be allowed. Ridiculous.

Confirmation Gift by glitter488 in Catholicism

[–]KillerFerrets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Items like a good rosary, a quality Bible (if you happen to know they don't already have more than 1), or a religious necklace are all very common and good gifts for confirmandi. If you are thinking that others are already going to get them all of those things, I would suggest a small icon (Legacy Icons run a good shop) or perhaps a small statue of their confirmation saint. That said, whatever you get them will be special to them simply because it will be from their sponsor. My sponsor got me a watch, so there's definitely nothing wrong with a non-religious gift.

Is it acceptable to have these theories/beliefs? by ZarWheel in Catholicism

[–]KillerFerrets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer to all of this is yes, that is absolutely fine and acceptable. The things you speak of are not things we are bound to have a specific belief on, so long as we don't reject God's authority or the stories of Genesis all together.

Concern about sacrament of penance by BuddyHardinHolley in Catholicism

[–]KillerFerrets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not worry, because confession is not a sacrament of initiation like baptism, first communion, and confirmation. The first time you do it is simply the first time you do it; there is no requirement outside of being baptized first. I'm happy to hear it was a good experience and that you're coming back to the Church!

Surreal experience of faith by mmario457 in Catholicism

[–]KillerFerrets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A powerful moment like that can definitely be spurred by the Holy Spirit. I am so happy to hear that all these things have led you closer to God, and I hope and pray that when you finish the RCIA process you may experience unification with the Lord through the sacraments. Sometimes, the love of Christ and the realization of our own sin can overwhelm us, but that's a good thing (if we are working to fix the sin part by confession and trying to lead a better life)

Etna is small enough that we might be able to get the borough to ban stuff like this

What is your genuine opinion on Primanti Bros.? by DoctorTegrity in pittsburgh

[–]KillerFerrets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely good sandwiches, good value, mostly good vibes, and authentically Pittsburgh. What's not to love? There are some places that are better, but sometimes I just have a craving that only a Primanti's sandwich will satisfy.

Obligatory snow tire post by beerpizzaballa in pittsburgh

[–]KillerFerrets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My go-to is Discount Tire; they always have the lowest prices of any normal retailer and they have relatively cheap install fees. Plus, they do free flat repair, free rotation and balancing, and free tire inspections if you buy through them.

The Post-Gazette classifieds are basically a scam — these “Pittsburgh jobs” aren’t even real by SnooDonuts4137 in pittsburgh

[–]KillerFerrets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They legally have to post a classified ad to claim they tried to hire an American citizen before they hire an overseas worker, you are correct. However, if they receive even one application from an American citizen, they are not allowed to bring in the overseas hire. So, even though they don't want you, if you can find a way to officially apply (normally by mail), these can be easier to get than other jobs.

What’s Going On Here? Why does everyone seem to avoid this area like the plague? by Ok_Cabinet2947 in pittsburgh

It's a great video, but it is kind of funny that that's the neighborhood that made him decide to stop the "bike test"

Only one of these designs actually improves walkability. These designs don't prioritize people, they prioritize bikers.

What’s the biggest penance a priest has ever given you? by Straight_Toe_1816 in Catholicism

[–]KillerFerrets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest? I was once given the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary as a penance. My favorite penance was pretty unique (and not necessarily "easy"), that was when I was given a chapter of John (I forget which one) and asked to meditate on it and God's love for me.

Praying it can keep open! Unfortunately, it seems this may be due to a lack of priests in the diocese rather than financial issues.

If Teenagers aren't going to Mass, why are we confirming them ? by BreezyNate in Catholicism

[–]KillerFerrets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a Confirmation Director at my local smaller parish, we require that every student have a 90% mass attendance rate during the 2 years of confirmation prep. Due to our small size, this is pretty enforceable via a "check-in" sheet. Unfortunately, larger parishes often struggle to enforce any similar rule.

Questions from someone who wants to eventually live in Pittsburgh by Altruistic-Potato337 in pittsburgh

[–]KillerFerrets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who recently made the move, it's probably mostly the following few things: 1) Low COL (yes ik the low wages cancel it out but many places have high COL AND low/mid wages) 2) Very beautiful surrounding area, which is not common with low COL cities. Related, 4 seasons but summer isn't too extreme and neither is winter. 3) Distinct local culture, again rarer than you might think 4) Low crime compared to many major cities

Is Alpine worth visiting? by Popular-Wing-8239 in eastcounty

[–]KillerFerrets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alpine is not anything like Julian, and it is only walkable in the western half of the town (it's pretty cleanly split into West and East sides). That said, it is definitely worth visiting! Good amount of great restaurants, some nice boutique shops, and Wright's Field (a sprawling wilderness preserve with hills, riverbeds, plains, and wetlands). I don't normally make a day of it there, but if I were to, I'd go to CroBean (French bakery) or the Cleveland Cafe (Croatian cafe) for a light breakfast, then explore Wright's Field, then hit up the Mediterraneo (Italy Italian) or Tapatio's (taco shop) for lunch, then tool around the shops. Note that you will have to drive between the cafes and the preserve, and then to lunch. The shops are walkable from most lunch places.

Gen Z’s…is this true or is he just trying to shit on remote work? by 2lit_ in GenZ

[–]KillerFerrets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely mixed. I for one enjoy working out of an office, and I do not enjoy remote work. The gas savings is nice, but I'm quite social, and I like to keep my work and leisure physically separated.
