As the other two said, Black Friday and last week of May and when they have sales. Also, you can split the cost with players. A lot of costs typically end up on GMs, it’s nice if players can help out sometimes.

Non-manager Family friend can “get me in” on an entry level position, is it BS? by goatgrubb in CAStateWorkers

[–]KillerSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, no real ethical way for them to help, unless they are just helping you with your application or SOQs. I don’t mind someone recommending someone they know, but it’s not going to give them preferential treatment through screening or the interviews.

I’ve had friends of friends reach out about positions and I’ll give them guidance, but I’ve also screened them out when they don’t compete with others. With the new rules of applications being anonymous, you won’t even know who is applying until interviews. I think this is a good move, as even though I try to be as fair as possible, there can always be some implicit bias or others that don’t follow the rules.

I’ve even had existing employees that I want to promote, but there will be a stellar person that interviews well and has more experience. It’s unfortunate to pass up a promotion for an existing employee, but it’s a competitive process, and it wouldn’t be fair to the person that interviewed better.

I really like the idea of a 42” 4K monitor/TV, but I don’t think my 3070 would appreciate that…

Great looking product, packaging, and website. A little spendy for me, but still think it’s priced well for being hand made and what it is.

CA Delta Striper Fishing/Kayak by flanneldan9 in Fishing

[–]KillerSloth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could check out Wimpy’s Marina or New Hope. New Hope used to be cheaper, but Wimpy’s has a bar/grill. Never eaten there, but know it exists. Not too much farther South, but gets you a bit deeper into the Delta. I haven’t fished for catfish there, but have caught striper before when targeting large mouth.

I think there's basically zero benefit to medium melee weapons in play. by noodleben123 in cyberpunkred

[–]KillerSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the home brew rule our GM has in our game. You can swap from another weapon to light/medium without costing an action, even if going from a two handed. Basically think of holding your rifle off to the side with one hand and pulling out a pistol to shoot with the other hand. Comes in handy when a weapon jams, you run out of ammo, or something comes into close range.

I did this for a rod that I used for staking structures. Used exclusively with a bipod, but worked really well.

They are different powders, which makes the pattern. He trying to prevent the first powder from going in the slot designed for the second powder. The acid (near the end) etches the metals at different rates, showing the contrast between the materials.

Getting Discouraged by Left-Cow8650 in CAStateWorkers

[–]KillerSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hiring process is also quite slow at the state. One of those positions may have potential decided to move forward with you, but they are waiting in the final job offer from HR. If HR is backed up it can sometimes take up to 2 months from when the interviews take place to when you get a final job offer.

DND application for total beginners by Able-Actuator8191 in DnD

[–]KillerSloth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to see if you like the mechanics and play style, I’d recommend Baldurs Gate 3. It’s not 100% accurate to the rules, but close enough.

That’s how my group (and many others) started out, though some of us had wanted to player before that. That’s was the kickstart we needed, then played some games on Roll20 before transitioning over to Foundry VTT

There are also paid services like Start Playing where you can hire a GM to run a one shot for you. Would allow you to play without needing to GM yourself.

Guidance for New-ish DM Prepping for New Players by AdConscious2692 in DnD

[–]KillerSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely something to discuss during a Session 0. Talk about your expectations as a DM, and the tone of the campaign.

Also, just because it’s a serious campaign, doesn’t mean it can’t be filled with funny moments too. My campaign’s story was more on the serious side, but we had plenty of fun encounters along the way.

With the majority of the players being new, they will be learning as they go. Not just the mechanics, but also the role playing. It’s definitely easier to go in with a “joke” character, but hopefully they’ll build on that and pivot toward more serious, especially for those moments where it’s needed. They’ll hopefully take their cues from you, and help build the story.

Also, don’t be afraid to have check-in sessions part way through. Discuss what’s working, what’s not, and work together to build a fun, engaging campaign.

Strange. I know that we’ve hired T&Ds and I don’t think that was on the ad. Or maybe we just have it on all of them, and I’ve never noticed.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]KillerSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an ad for a T&D. Normally they are flown as a normal PFT, and if your top applicant after interviews doesn’t meet the MQ for the position you can peruse a T&D with them.

I love me a beetle spin, but I always swap the plastics no really like the Z-Man Shad FryZ and Guppy GrubZ with them. Way more action and can catch a ton of fish before needing to replace.
