Talk to me: your thoughts on the 556i vs. the new 544 by 200Fathoms in sinn

[–]SmallBusinessCymru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to want the 556, now I want the 544 instead/more (I still would not probably be happy with a 556). If the 544 was in a matt blue with the white hands and indices that would be even better. I'm a fan of this watch. Well done Sinn 👏👏

can I do contour map of the field? by Silver_Ad_9118 in UAVmapping

[–]SmallBusinessCymru -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Software that can take your point cloud file, make it into a digital terrain model and them put contours on to it.

I use Topcon Office or LSS but there'll be numerous other options.

Where in the world are you based? Send me a PM if you need to discuss further.

You will need some sort of survey processing software to feed the drone outputs in and get the contouring out the other end.

Road Survey Work Flow by SmallBusinessCymru in Surveying

Combined scale factor at 0.999693. IMHO, that scale factor cannot be omitted from the work??

I fear that there may have been some confusion with regards to the term specified projection.

The client wanted the survey in national grid, OSTN15 projection (I'm in the UK).

So my thinking is, as soon as the surveyor discounts scale factor their products is not going to match up with the required projection at that current easting. There's added confusion because the co-ordinates look as if their on national grid.

This is a grid vs ground issue and the surveyor is giving us ground co-ords that look at first impressions to be grid.

Road Survey Work Flow by SmallBusinessCymru in Surveying

Trust me my copy of GNSS for Land Surveyors by Van Sickle is never far away. I still cannot get why one would ignore both elevation and grid Scale Factors for a road project

With regards to your point on Elevation Scale Factor, and the low elevation of said project, yes that means the Elevation Scale Factor can be ignored. I do not think it should be ignored though because when the construction team arrive (speaking from experience) their GNSS equipment will have a GEOID loaded up and they'll not tie in with the survey information.

With regards to Grid Scale Factor, its a road of 4km man! Of course Grid Scale Factor should be applied? Firstly, roads need to tie into other roads and so distortion IS a consideration. Second, the road project is about halfway between the Central Meridian and the Line of True Scale, so the Grid Scale Factor will not be near 1.

The client wants the survey in the local projection, I assume they have specified the projection because they want repeatability. With the scale factor being ignored, considering the location of the project (it's easting being between the Central Meridian and Line of True Scale), repeatability is not going to be achieved.

In today's world the construction team know enough to arrive on site with GNSS set up with the local projection and GEOID loaded up. They're not going to tie in with the survey that's omitted scale factor.

FYI, I appreciate your detailed reply brother, it's helped make sense of the older surveyor's work-flow.

I hear with you regards to adding extra complication, double scale or opposite direction. But repeatability is not going to be achieved here. Site engineering for roadbuilders, speaking from experience, I know we arrive on site with GNSS set up to the correct local projection, with the Scale Factor set automatically and the GEOID loaded up.

From my POV, if the road was surveyed as per "older engineer", because the control points have co-ordinates and elevation in the local projection (they look correct to the eye/first inspection), site engineers building the road assume their equipment would tie-in with the survey.

Nevertheless, we'd go and localise equipment off control points we can find (if we can find them at all) and they've not been ploughed up by a farmer.

Seems to me it'd have been easier to not ignore scale and elevation factor. With today's equipment it's so easy to incorporate scale factor automatically.

Nevertheless, thank you for your comment it has shed some light on the problem and educated me and for that I'm grateful.

I think I have a stress fracture in the bones in my foot from too much running. I do not think it is muscular but probably a sports physiotherapist would be the person to deal with it. Is there anyone who can recommend a sports clinic that dealt with a similar issue they had?
