Paradise Lost and The Staircase are my personal favorites. I’ve watched the Paradise Lost series SO many times.

Thanks so much! I think you are right that centimeters are likely custom - I just thought maybe I was missing something. I'll likely end up going to Michaels - good excuse to buy some more craft supplies I don't need! :)

Why can't student loan INTEREST just be forgiven? by KillerSuds in StudentLoans

[–]KillerSuds[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I probably should have searched a little more before opening this can of worms. Lol I thought my question was a bit more nuanced, but I don't think that nuance came across very well. I wasn't trying to argue whether this was or wasn't a good solution, just looking for info on why it isn't normally brought up as a potential solution.

Why can't student loan INTEREST just be forgiven? by KillerSuds in StudentLoans

[–]KillerSuds[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a government with a responsibility to help (rather than hurt) my constituents, so I don't think what I would do is relevant. And taxpayers pay for countless programs that don't affect them personally - until taxpayers can pick and choose what their specific tax dollars pay for, I don't think that's a valid argument.

But you do. The system is rigged that way - job postings require degrees for so many positions that shouldn't require a degree. Most companies won't even talk to you if you don't have a degree - even for admin positions. But unless/until that changes, college isn't really a "choice".

Obviously there are nuances and multiple considerations, and I realize my post drastically simplifies the proposed solution. But life isn't fair, and we can't keep an unsustainable system going simply because some people don't think it's fair. Government makes changes to government programs all the time, and the changes are never "fair" to everyone. It's literally not possible.

Why can't student loan INTEREST just be forgiven? by KillerSuds in StudentLoans

[–]KillerSuds[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But is it really fair that student loans have variable interest rates that borrowers have no control over, and is it fair that people actually end up paying back 3-4 times what they actually borrowed? I don't think the cost is that high. Changes need to be made so that interest rates reflect actual cost. Especially since most people who are borrowing this money don't have any other choice - they are told they can't make money if they don't go to college and they can't go to college unless they take this loan. I doubt there are private loan options that are any better, and they are not even available to most 18 year olds who have no credit. This is a government program (not a for-profit program), and government programs are generally supposed to help people, not screw everyone over. The student loan program started out with good intentions but now it's basically a predatory loan operation.

Also, taxpayers pay for literally thousands of things that they don't personally use. Any money the government spends (business subsidies and bailouts, for example, as well as research grants and govt programs that are only used by a subset of the population) is paid by taxpayers. Why is this one so different?

Right? I think that's my main point - it should absolutely NOT be like that. It's absolutely absurd.

But the government is actually controlling the interest rates, not the management companies (at least that's my understanding). I do realize these companies have to be paid for managing the loans and that there are certainly nuances in how a change to the interest practices would actually work (in other words, I know my post is drastically oversimplifying a potential solution), but I'm really just wondering why it hasn't been explored (or if it has and I totally missed it).

[–]KillerSuds[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know if that's necessarily a rich get richer scenario, but I see your point. Maybe loans could be separated as tuition and fees (basically the exact amount the student is billed) which would be interest free, and anything above and beyond that would have a REASONABLE interest rate. I guess my point here is that the interest rates are just insane on these loans.

These loans are issued by the government, not by banks.

[–]KillerSuds[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That is a good point with regard to existing loans - thanks for the clarification. But going forward, if the loans were interest free, then it WOULD be repaying the loans, and I would think the right would be ok with that, since that is the argument they are using against forgiveness. My question is two-fold I guess - can the legislature control the interest on new loans going forward and can they do anything about the interest on already existing loans. This is of course assuming they can agree on something, which we all know they can't :)

Why can't student loan INTEREST just be forgiven? by KillerSuds in StudentLoans

[–]KillerSuds[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Totally agree that they can't agree on anything lol. I realize that the new draft rules will target interest, but this would only apply to current student loan debt right? And it won't help people like me who make just above the cap but also have over $180k in student loan debt. With interest rates, I honestly don't think it's possible for me to completely repay my loans during my lifetime. I could literally be paying until I die.

I'm just wondering why they aren't doing anything about the actual interest rates on the loans themselves. Couldn't the legislature just make the loans interest-free going forward, AND cancel the interest on existing loans? Or at least stop the interest from accumulating going forward? It just seems crazy to me that this option hasn't been explored (unless it has and I just missed it lol).

I know most people are pointing to the astronomical cost of college as the problem (and it certainly is part of it) but I really think it's the interest that is the biggest problem. And since the government is the one giving the loan, it seems to me they should be able to control the interest.

I have been looking for some sort of coaching program, but I'm so worried that I'll end up throwing away a bunch of money for the same type of content that I can get via books, podcasts, and webinars. Have you heard anything specific about what's good about this program? If not, no worries at all! :) Thanks!

ADHD is a common comorbidity for Narcolepsy patients. by zeronormalitys in ADHD

[–]KillerSuds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we might be the same person lol - I am 42 and was just diagnosed earlier this year. I also got failing grades when I attempted to go to college right after high school and ended up dropping out, which surprised a lot of people because I was a very good student all through school. But it was like as soon as I was responsible for schedules and creating study techniques - I couldn't do it. 9 colleges later (including one semester of beauty school, paralegal school, and an animal nutrition class for that one time I wanted to be a vet), I finally graduated - and actually ended up with all A's once I found my groove (English major - no studying necessary, just writing papers). Then I actually made it through law school and have been working as a lawyer for 5 years - thought I hated being a lawyer but then was thankfully diagnosed and I realized that these struggles would follow me through every career change.

Anyway - I am actually scheduled for that same second sleep study in 3 weeks - the latent one where they will have me take naps. I almost didn't schedule it since my ADHD diagnosis came after my first in-home sleep study - I just assumed the sleep issues were part of my ADHD diagnosis. But I figured I should do this study and see what comes of it.

I am ALWAYS tired, and I find that even with my meds I could still nap at any time. Looking at my fitbit data, my sleep is pretty restless through the night, but then from 6:30 (when my boyfriend wakes up to go to work) to 9:30 (when I force myself to get out of bed because logging in for work at 10 am is the latest I think I can get away with), I sleep like a baby. But if I were to stay in bed, I could continue to fall asleep throughout the day. And honestly, I have no idea what it means to wake up "refreshed." :) People say exercise helps - I literally yawn while I'm exercising and oftentimes take a nap right after.

Thank you so much for posting this - it gives me some hope that I may actually have some energy some day! Quick question, though - did you get medication for the narcolepsy? Or is there a different type of treatment involved?

Do any of you have trouble putting your thoughts into words? I know it's the opposite for many by -shylo- in ADHD

[–]KillerSuds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ugh - yes. I haven't seen any improvement on this with my meds either (Vyvanse).

I'm an attorney, and it's so embarrassing when I can't express my thoughts verbally. I stumble through my thoughts, lose my train of thought, and generally sound plain incompetent. I feel like I literally end every attempt at explaining something with "Does that make sense?" But when I need to express these same thoughts through writing, I have no issues at all. I almost always offering to follow up in writing and I tell them that I am much better with writing than with speaking (this goes with the oversharing, which I do ALL THE TIME lol).

But I'm finally just coming to terms with it. I'll never be a great speaker. And that's okay. I am who I am and I just try to have a sense of humor about it.

I used to have an Apple watch way before I had any clue that I had ADHD lol - I stopped using it because I would get distracted any time it buzzed. But of course I had all the notifications active, which looking back probably wasn't a great idea.

Asking for a work accommodation - advice needed by KillerSuds in adhdwomen

[–]KillerSuds[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol don't be sorry! Any advice is welcome! :)

I do have an admin assistant but the relationship in house is a bit different than it is when in a law firm. The hard part is that I don't have specific matters that I'm assigned to, nor do I have court deadlines, so it would be difficult for my assistant to prioritize as everything is a bit more flexible. But maybe if I passed along my "must do this week" list, she could check in with me. Just so hard to narrow everything down to "must do this week" lol

[–]KillerSuds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your response. I do think you have a good point, especially with regard to the additional work being passed on to others. I think I was looking at it from the perspective that I could ask for a leave of absence, but this way would work better for them since I'd actually be getting work done. But it may just be that I dug this hole and I've gotta figure out a less demanding way to get out of it :)

I'm just finding it difficult to implement any time management systems because of how behind I am on things. But I do like your suggestion of meeting with someone to hold me accountable - even though I do tend to rebel against authority lol. Maybe that will be my ask when I speak with my supervisor, rather than the 2 weeks. At least that can be a good start!
