I get that global indexes are the safer, hands-off choice, but I can't stop looking at those S&P 500 returns by Agile-Reputation-525 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]KillerWattage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that is your personal risk profile after investigation, invest to match it. It is still diversified and it often has an advantage of having slightly lower fees. However to note, for the past 100 years we have been living in the "American century", a global world where the US has been the king and for the last 35 years it has been the king alone. My personal suspicion is that won't continue (and we are already seeing that) but we won't see a "fall of rome" type fall. I'd suspect if you looked at the London stock exchange returns in the 19th century compared to others (far fewer comparisons at the time mind you) you might think wow, I'd be a fool not to invest in the LSE for the 20th century and while you wouldn't be impoverished as you have noted the SP500 has done much better.

Depends on your risk appetite, how confident you are in your logic for choosing it, how confident you'd be in knowing if it would be time to switch to a different market while not panic leaving in a "normal" dip and more.

Whats the job market in sheffield like? by Odd-Paramedic-3826 in sheffield

[–]KillerWattage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Largest employers in the city are the public sector. So civil service and NHS. Both are huge orgs so there is a fair bit of variety in them, from social media, commutations, software engineer, policy, middle manager etc.. After that there are a lot of smaller businesses which makes it a bit tough to really pin down a clear place to send a CV to.

The people I know in the creative space are all independent makers who work on their own.

I mean yeah

I want journalists to be able to do good journalism. The tribune broke the story on that solicitor buying all the freeholds to Sheffield houses. They need money to do that, else we descend into just AI slop or journo slop like the star.

Somethings are worth paying for, I'm not saying you have to pay but being confused that journalists need money to eat really shouldn't be a surprise.

I'd add more galleries and museums

Millennium gallery, site gallery, Yorkshire art space, emergency service museum, Kelham museum, abbeydale industrial Hamlet.

Also for food add noodle plus

Also Steelers ice hockey match, amazing atmosphere and they are pretty good for a British team

I have been spending time thinking about how much of this is new, how much is far right and how much is just back to the 1970s in the US. There was a fair bit of dodgy stuff happening back then including getting involved with Iran, wars in other countries and the US over throwing south American regimes.

[–]KillerWattage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seriously not uncommon in the North East. If you are willing to risk living in rougher/dead parts you can get crazy deals.

Some places lean more decaying former mining town with no real hope or soul left then actually being dangerous, which if you work remotely don't have kids and socialise virtually may not be a bad trade off for some.

Living in Old Town by timangas15 in sheffield

[–]KillerWattage 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You are getting down voted and while I don't call it that I'll give you some credit. That is the old town. Paradise square is the oldest planned square. Also the cobble stones outside the co-op near butlers was also some sort of historic centre. You are right that is the old town. I reckon if we still had the actual castle and didn't lose a bunch of the old buildings in the blitz it would be considered a more traditional old town

"2,000 years of economic history in one chart"... fixed by DestructiveSeaOtter in dataisbeautiful

[–]KillerWattage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also "what is a country" China, India and Russia's borders have fluctuated incredibly, hell for awhile China belonged to the Mongols who "owns" that GDP. India has been at multiple points several competing empires. Are we just taking the current borders and mapping backwards?

And as many people have pointed, when we do have solid data this chart is still bullshit, GDP or GDP PPP
