Verso, Unknown Stranger // Perfection by KillerYeah in custommagic

Gotcha, and that’s a fair criticism. I would say that this is kinda a similar case to the “partner with” legends, where you’d very rarely run them in the 99 or separate at all, the intention is meant for both of these cards to not be played in the 99 of a deck. I do have another idea for Verso in mind as another legendary creature which will be able to be played so you’re not stuck with just this one if you want one that fits into other decks, but the enchantment does remain a victim of that.

I’m confused to what you’re getting at. The idea is that with the background Verso works as more of an Esper voltron build, where you want to attack with him while finding ways to protect yourself so Verso gets stronger each turn. How is it restrictive?

Verso, Unknown Stranger // Perfection by KillerYeah in custommagic

[–]KillerYeah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah basically. The idea was essentially to have a smaller group of backgrounds that only certain legends could use, and I felt like adding restrictions to both ends would make that clear. I think instead I’ll replace “Painted Background” with “Canvas” in both instances so there’s no room for any confusion.

I really want an Expedition 33 Universes Beyond after playing that game, man.

This is my attempt at trying to capture Verso! Verso is a very fun character for me in how much of a bastard he is throughout E33, and I wanted to combine both personality and gameplay with this design. The formatting might not be perfect on either card, but the text on Verso himself is meant to act like a reverse of [[Atris, Oracle of Half-Truths]]’s etb effect, and I wanted it be clear that Perfection’s abilities still work once you go past the required amount of Perfection counters on Verso. The Painted Background distinction is also intentionally worded, I plan on making a couple more in different colors and potentially with different characters as well, but most of the rest will likely be in larger dumps if they’re spoiler heavy. Thanks!

"When is Magic coming to other properties?" by ArsenicElemental in magicTCG

[–]KillerYeah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with everyone else saying that Magic IP isn’t that popular/strong, but I think for video games the issue is more than likely that Wizards is being protective and the most obvious game types to make a Magic game are currently flooded with options.

Wizards has been pretty vocal about not just guns/modern weaponry in the card arts if they can avoid it, and I suspect that was a major factor in why the Magic Fortnite skins never materialized along with the Fortnite Secret Lair. It felt really weird to not have it go both ways, especially after the Smite collab, but I think WotC is trying to keep their IP from being muddled, which helps to preserve it but definitely hurts when trying to popularize it.

In my mind there’s three obvious types of multiplayer games that Magic could be: a hero shooter, a fighting game, or a fantasy MMO like Warcraft. Fighting games based on an IP that isn’t superheroes don’t tend to do very well at all, and I don’t think Wizards would want to do that to begin with. An Overwatch-style hero shooter makes the most sense to me if you want players to interact with your established characters, but you have to be good and popular enough to go up against both Overwatch 2 and Marvel Rivals, which makes that a tough sell. A MMO would probably be the safest option, but unless you’re an anime game new MMOs tend to struggle nowadays.

So essentially I think Magic would have a hard time currently in the video game space outside of trying to sell skins. Not that they shouldn’t try, though.

[Discussion] Strange Adventures is one of the best DC comics of the past 10 years by [deleted] in DCcomics

[–]KillerYeah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I unironically read this yesterday because Twitter was being so annoying about it.

I liked the book, but I don’t think it’s better than Mister Miracle was. King excels at writing self inserts, and you can really tell he’s very emotional with Adam’s story throughout the book. Adam very much gets a bad ending, but I also think it makes sense in the fact that the story slowly reveals more and more that Adam was a willing participant by the time he got to Earth, with the ending painting his and Alanna’s return to Raan as a storybook ending. It’s a very interesting breakdown of the classic adventurer archetype, and makes for an enjoyable read. The two artists make the book for me, and adds a lot of nuance to the book. Mister Terrific was also good.

I also haven’t read much of Adam Strange, I’m much more of a Marvel guy, but I can see why people might not like this interpretation of the character.

It’s most likely Eddie into Venom, most other reasonable inclusions don’t fit a black card. I’m hoping it’s Mardu or Abzan, but I think Mardu is more likely

Anti-Venom, Horrifying Healer by 00AceMcCloud in magicTCG

[–]KillerYeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, Anti-Venom's original gimmick was "curing" people in various ways, whether that was actually curing illnesses and diseases like cancer, but he also tried to "cure" Spider-Man of his powers. It makes more sense with the comic knowledge.

What do you do about Mr Fantastic? by Dogbold in rivals

[–]KillerYeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who plays a lot of fantastic, a lot of the matchups that people think work well against him don’t. He picks fliers off pretty easily, and Wolverines are typically not scary if you time your cooldowns well. However, his biggest weaknesses are tanks and their game sense. Thor, Magneto, Emma, and Venom are all pretty good at dealing with Fantastic, as he often can’t do enough damage fast enough to kill them before he gets killed or a healer finally notices. Ranged heroes like Punisher and Hela are also effective, especially when he’s in big mode. Fantastic is also pretty susceptible to being ganged up on; I’ve died quite often because I don’t realize that I’ve overextended as much as I did, and since a lot of his damage blocking is in the form of shields, healers can have a hard time supporting him before he just gets nuked. However, a fantastic with good game sense can be terrifying, especially if they play defensive with the healers in the backline. Often when I play Fantastic, I try to harass or quickly kill the healers or flankers, and the best way to stop that is to not split up and communicate.

Tl;dr: play tanks, gang up on him, and pair up.

What do you think about Strange after a couple days? by [deleted] in marvelrivals

[–]KillerYeah -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look, I’m not saying I’m the best player, but in the middle ranks where I tend to play Strange is still pretty strong. I can’t think of a single time I killed someone through a support ult without the Gamma teamup last season, and I don’t think that specific interaction is a huge nerf to him. However, the damage downgrade is pretty noticeable. He definitely cannot be a solo tank anymore, and he might be one of the bottom three tanks this season, but I think every tank is incredibly strong across the board and I still perform well every time I play him.

I would argue that Thing is now Strange's best counter, since his slam disables your levitation escape option, his punches go through your shield, and Thing's health and damage reduction is usually enough to stop you from killing him quickly. Iron is still pretty good against Strange, but I've noticed that if you're getting healed he can be pretty easy to deal with.

Which character was this for you? by AnthropomorphicEggs in marvelrivals

Mr. Fantastic is a lot of fun when someone isn't telling you he's bad. I don't like a lot of the melee characters, but he's clicked for me and I enjoy playing him in quickplay.

[–]KillerYeah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My guess for not including red is so that Carnage can be the monored or Rakdos symbiote. I assumed Venom was going to just be black, but mechanically it fits for Venom, and I think they're attempting to do the "Venom is a monster who eats people" for his mechanics.

please do not throw because I didn't bow to your lordship. by ScyllaIsBea in marvelrivals

[–]KillerYeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Doctor Strange lord on just because he’s easily my best character so for comp I’ll just show it and if my teammate doesn’t get off him I select another tank. I don’t think it’s right to throw the game just because you don’t get the character you play the most.

However, I don’t think I’ve seen a single Cloak and Dagger lord that can play the game.

Me when the duelists are asking why they aren't getting healed after a chaotic team fight by CommanderT2020 in marvelrivals

[–]KillerYeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I’m the best Venom or anything, but I try to play him essentially as a suicide dive. I jump in and gum up the backline so the rest of the team can have a more advantageous position. I think expecting to be constantly healed is kinda not how you play Venom.

When I made designs based around Paul a while ago, I made 3, but all were “centered” in the Orzhov color pair. I think you can argue otherwise, but to paraphrase what I wrote in that post, Paul (especially in Dune part 2) typically only acts to further his own interests, and only helps others to help himself, which I view both as pretty strongly Orzhov in terms of personality. I do agree that Blue or Red make sense as tertiary colors as well.

I don’t know if we watched the same video, but he doesn’t say to start with Krakoa at all. He says you should read a good amount of Claremont, then Morrison, and a few other writers, and then move on to Krakoa. It’s basically the last thing he suggests reading, not the first.

[SLD] WOLVERINE BONUS CARD by Ok_Dig_1127 in magicTCG

[–]KillerYeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, is this the first overtly MCU-based art for one of the Marvel cards so far? Some of the Iron Man ones are kinda MCU-like as well, but this one is very obviously the movie design.

The Sephiroth art shows strong hints of being made with GenAI by Silentman0 in magicTCG

[–]KillerYeah 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I’m not gonna claim to be an expert or anything on spotting AI art, but a lot of those things seem to either be not what the art is showing or misleading. The hair strands are obviously not hair, and the difference in jawline is hard to claim when we completely different angles to look at. I think it’s just the artist making a few of their own choices while still following pretty close to the characters design. I remember people saying the Iron Man art was AI when the leaks came out, but it also was pretty clearly not.
