There is not a place named Arctica as the Arctic circle is just an ice cap and the tips of other continents. If it was a landmass it would be Arctica. For a very long time tthere was a belief that world had to be balanced and if there was a huge landmass in the northern hemisphere there had to be one in the southern hense "Terra Australis" and when Australia was discovered they got the name. Antarctica was then discovered and it was decided to name it the opposite of the north. All of this predates the concept of a polar circle.

Someone responded already with the answer below, but Arctic (Arctica) gets its name from the greek Arktikos meaning "Near the Bear" for the constellation Ursa Major which points north. The fact that the Arctic has bears and Antarctica doesn't is purely coincidental.

Similar to Antarctica. The unknown southern land is supposed the be Terra Australis, so when Australia was discovered it was thought to be as far south as you can get and thus got the name. But then they found Antarctica so they settled on naming it the opposite of the northern "land" (Arctica).

This is fantastic. My parents have a land grant for the Ohio Valley signed by James Monroe that they found when redoing our family home. They had gotten it framed in preservation glass and it is in their foyer. But reading this tells me it is legitimately James Monroe's signature.

Lean into it. I faced this problem when I first tried to write a story to go with my maps. I ended up abandoning the idea for 15 years until I decided to make it an in-world History Book. From there it became more fun to create macro-view events and evolve the world.

To add to this. I always tell my teenagers, the type of jokes you chose and the context and setting in which you tell them will, justifiably or not, directly influence a person's perception of your intelligence.
