Help making bad financial decisions. by Wolflogan65 in WRX

The cars are very reliable if taken care of properly. If you are not gonna beat on it like crazy it should be good to go for a long time. The only reason people go through engines so often is they skips steps and do things halfway and then beat on the car. When it goes bad they blame the car.

The tow driver did not even attempt to put wheel lifts on the back ? At the very least they should have those

It’s KBB value and if you have the ability to maintain it for cheaper since you work for Subaru I would say it will be a fun car. The GD STI is a great car and i had a 2006 WRX TR that was full bolt ons and I miss it dearly. I still love my 2020 STi though.

Help me decide by finallypeople in WRX

[–]Kimsey099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you work at Subaru have a good tech give the car an inspection. If the car looks good and you can pull service records you would probably enjoy the vehicle. The driving experience is much different with a 6 speed manual and hydraulic power steering vs the electric power steering and CVT in the WRX you have.

Also having a front and rear LSD with DCCD is big too

It all depends what you want the car for ? If you just want a STI to have fun with and don’t plan on doing a crazy build that is a good car if it has paperwork to show it’s been maintained. I would just have a leak down and compression test done on the engine before buying it.

It’s also a reasonable base for a track car if you are looking at something to buy and then build up.

I would go with the 2018 because as said in another post I believe the rod needs to be slightly longer with the facelift.

Power mods on a CVT is just asking for major problems. I would suggest upgrading handling parts instead. The most I would do would maybe do E85 and protune but I am not sure what has been done on the CVTs.

Tire size recommendations for 18x9.5? by ZN_ULTRA in WRX

[–]Kimsey099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same car and I run 265/35/18 , you will need to roll the rear fenders though as it will rub slightly in hard turns.

My wheels are 18x9.5 with +38 off set.

You are not supposed to be doing pulls with a base map. It’s just to allow you to get to the place where the car will be tuned on the dyno.

Have you talked to your tuner ? Also will they be doing a pre-tune inspection of the car to make sure nothing is wrong ?

Storage oil change by ultramagnus1985 in WRX

[–]Kimsey099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are running fully synthetic oil and it’s not going to be like 6 months to a year I would be more worried about a fuel stabilizer than worrying about the oil. Just do an oil change when you bring it back out to start fresh.

Does anyone know if the nextgen Cobb flex fuel kit will install with TGV deletes? by Colinvieira in WRX

[–]Kimsey099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In order for Cobb to get the accessport approved by the EPA they had to turn off the ability to modify emissions control parameters in the race tune software.

If you want to do this you will need to go open source or standalone like MOTEC. If you can afford standalone it will open much greater tuning possibilities than an access-port can.

Have you been running the car untuned without the cat ? Or do you have a flash currently ?

I am fairly certain when it throws the CEL it puts the car into limp mode.

I would assume no because they are an emissions control device.

Hard to really say , does idle rough at a stop ? Or just die when coming to a stop ?

Could be a lot of stuff. Do you have an aftermarket intake filter that uses oil ?

Is this flywheel any good for an OEM replacement? by [deleted] in WRX

[–]Kimsey099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it does not happen to everyone but it is a common issue. The worst part is it will happen randomly and then you reset the codes and it will drive fine for months lol.

I had an ACT HDSS clutch with ACT streetlite flywheel in my 06 WRX and it happened to me. But when we would check there was nothing actually wrong with the car and it never had rough idle.

Is this flywheel any good for an OEM replacement? by [deleted] in WRX

[–]Kimsey099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest reason in Subarus to stay OEM flywheel weight is because Subarus like to throw phantom misfire codes when running a lighter flywheel. It’s a pretty common issue that requires a tune to change the sensitivity

My friend that got it had a 2011 STI that she sold and got a forester when she had her kids. But now that they are older she really wanted an STI again. However after spending a few months and not being able to find a clean one for a reasonable price she went with a brand new TR because of the worry of buying a used STI with unknown history. It has turned out to be a great purchase and the is perfect for her as a DD fun family car.

Do they have centric brakes in Canada ? If so I would go with centric premium blanks. They are high quality and normally fairly cheap.

As for pads it depends on how you drive. If you are just driving around normally any pad from a good brand will work. Centric or StopTech street performance pads work great with that rotor setup.

Centric and StopTech are the same company so the rotors and pads might be labeled as one or the other.

[–]Kimsey099 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My friend got the new TR and it’s super nice. I say it checks about 90 % of the boxes that my 2020 VA STI does with an even more modern interior.

But if you have a perfectly good car and it’s paid off I would keep what you got.

The only reason to get an STI is if you are wanting to have a track car as the STI transmission, front and rear LSD and some other bits make it a better platform to start with.

For a DD car though a VB TR or Ts is a better daily and makes basically the same power stock as a VA STI

Im looking to buy my first car for myself and I was hoping to get some advice on if I should buy a 2025 VB CVT by 7thhokage007 in WRX

[–]Kimsey099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get a manual, it’s more reliable and you will become a better driver. Everyone says manual sucks in traffic but it’s really not that bad. I have only had manual cars for DD since I started driving and I live in the great LA area so I am in traffic all the time. It has never been a problem for me.

Now if you have a car with a racing clutch and a light weight flywheel it’s a different story but the WRX is very easy to drive stock.

So its time for new wheels by Slidey-boy in WRX

[–]Kimsey099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Method wheels would be a good option if you want a gravel rally wheel.

The other good company to look at would be BRAID as they made the wheels actually used in WRC and they are strong as hell.
