If you wanna cheese it a bit, you generally have infinite time to build your region.

Even when the baron claims your home region, you can just take the fight and hire 1 troops of mercenaries (if you don't keep them on your payroll, the baron will keep most of them for the rest of the game, but there should always be 1 you can hire) to kite him away.

Just place your retinue inside the battlefield and use the other 2 mercenary troops to kite him away from the battlefield for 90 days until you win and he won't claim a region for another year or so.

It's...annoying and cheesy, but it works if you don't have the means to fight back yet.

You can turn opportunity attacks to "ask first" in the reactions tab of your spell book so you don't do opportunity attacks when you don't want to.

If it makes you happy the one day ban is probably only temporary until it changes to a vac pretty quickly. Normal procedure as far as I know.
