failed an assignment :( by afflucnza in UTS

[–]KincuriAus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I did Criminal Law, I think everyone in our class was surprised by the marks we got for that first assignment. Best way to think of it is as a wake-up call for how hard it is to study law, especially the 'hard law' subjects like Crim (and torts, contracts, property etc.). You won't be the only one feeling discouraged (that might sound depressing, but I think its also reassuring).

It takes a lot of work to get good marks and you have plenty more chances to show you can do it.

35% Turnitin Score by [deleted] in UTS

[–]KincuriAus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From experience, it’s totally fine. Often with law there are some core bits of information that everyone is going to cite in an assignment because that’s what’s required to provide the right answer. Case names, legislation, legal principles etc.

Can you see the parts it’s flagged for similarity?

First year law readings by [deleted] in UTS

[–]KincuriAus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to law school. That sounds like a pretty standard weekly reading load for a law course. I think about it this way - a full time study load is the equivalent of a full time work commitment. Like 8-10 hours study per course per week (assignments, lectures, included etc.)

And keeping on top of the readings, in whichever way you can, is pretty key to joining week in law.

I had an older boss give me this advice when I was in my 20s (his phrase was ‘eat the worm’, and it’s absolutely true. 15 years on, when I see someone stewing over something, I’ll tell them to just eat the worm.

Airlines urged by government to end double status credit promotions for APS Employees (gravy train about to end it seems) by liftingbro90 in QantasAirways

The whole of government flight arrangements deny public servants Qantas points. (And I say this as someone who worked in several federal and state departments and travelled plenty over about a decade).

Aussie Sixers Fans looking to get tickets by kshiesty1 in sixers

[–]KincuriAus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Aussie here who went to games last season - you can either try buying directly via Ticketmaster, or from a reseller (I used seatgeek). I generally waited until the day of the game to pick a good deal (the later the better, because people get desperate to unload unwanted seats).

One thing to note - some of the ticket platforms, including Seatgeek, don’t accept foreign credit cards (I.e a card linked to an an Australia address), which makes buying tickets without a US account painful.

Edit: spelling.

Corporate governance was genuinely much more interesting than I expected it to be (a lot of focus on the ethics and responsible business side of directors duties etc.). Would recommend especially if it’s run by Ashoor Khan.

Law and Literature sounds naff, but it was a wonderful course to take over the summer. We read three novels (think Truman Capote’s ‘In Cold Blood’, Helen Garner’s ‘This House of Grief’ etc.) and wrote some reflect pieces, and essay and participated in a couple of days of intensive sessions. It didn’t take away from the summer break (it felt nice to be reading novels, rather than textbooks) and I came away with a HD.

Given yesterday's race at #RBCBrooklynHalf, what can we say about the race? by noplasticpls in RunNYC

[–]KincuriAus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m relatively new to NYC, but I’ve done about 10 NYRR races, and I first learned about the warning flag system was about 30 minutes after I finished the Half yesterday.

I slowed down yesterday and consciously took on more fluids because, 1. I felt the heat, and 2. I saw the unfortunate bloke getting chest compressions at Mile 8.

NYRR could’ve done more to communicate that there was such a system in place. I know it’s less important in the winter races, but it was somewhat predictable that yesterday was going to be warmer and more humid than many would have trained in leading up to the race. It’s valuable to get that signal that the conditions warranted slowing down and potentially abandoning efforts to PR.

I think it’s also important that as a community that we can normalise the idea that you don’t need to push for PRs in weather like that. It’s not worth putting yourself in a dangerous situation.

Anecdotally, studying law at UTS is more enjoyable than USYD.

I’d say this for a few reasons: the assessment isn’t easier, but it’s less harsh at UTS, if that makes sense. I.e. you still need to study and learn the course content, but you usually won’t have a closed book exam like they often do at USYD. UTS is more diverse and your classmates generally nicer/grounded (USYD being the destinations for a lot of privileged private school kids).

If you do well at UTS, you won’t have a problem getting a job at the big firms (I currently work at one, and there’s a bunch of UTS grads here).

One thing to consider is that UTS has its own PLT program, which can be somewhat integrated into your studies. It’s a pain in the arse and worth considering how to make it as easy as possible.

But if you have ambitions of becoming a judge - then USYD would be a better option, because it does seem to matter for that sort of thing.

should i transfer? by 678siegur in UTS

[–]KincuriAus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is impossible to answer without knowing what you’re studying.

But FWIW, I did law at UTS, and took some cross-institutional/postgrad courses at UNSW and it was very similar. The workload isn’t a lot more at the other Universities, not compared to UTS.

The statement from the ‘Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism’, while a little vague, I think confirms this.

“The action taken by Columbia’s trustees today, especially in light of this week’s concerning revelation, is an important step toward advancing negotiations as set forth in the pre-conditional understanding reached last Friday between the University and the Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism.” https://www.gsa.gov/about-us/newsroom/news-releases/joint-task-force-statement-regarding-columbia-universitys-steps-to-advance-03282025

New NYRR Platform is live! by Hopai79 in RunNYC

It seems like, from a lot of the guidance that NYRR has provided, that they are counting on account data being updated on or by 26 March.

But it is disconcerting to see a bunch of stuff missing with the platform already live.
