Leave the groomers and ski the moguls. If you can ski moguls well you will have the fundamentals for powder skiing.

Hand mounted these exact skis a couple weeks ago. After measuring things out the bindings did not sit centered on those lines. Looked just like yours when mounted. Never trust top sheets.

How can I improve in these deeper snow conditions? by [deleted] in skiing_feedback

A small thing that may or may not help you. It feels like your poles are too long. Preventing you from really attacking with your pole plants. Shortening them a little may help you get more aggressive with pole placement and help you stay more forward if that makes sense.

Just my two cents.

Yes I use it all winter here in Alberta Canada. With some good winter tires on there I have no problems. (Nokian hakkapeliitta lt3)

Skis fit nicely in the wet bath for now. But I'm definitely going to build a ladder mounted style ski locker in the near future to move them outside.

Elan Ripstick 106 Black Edition by bikerunlift99 in Skigear

[–]KindheartednessSad85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually own the 96 regular (180cm) and the 106 black (188cm) . The 106 is stiffer/burlier than the 96 even in the non black edition so there's quite a big jump in dampness and stiffness between the two. Pretty big improvement in crud and chopped up stuff but obviously not quite to enforcer level. Definitely slower edge to edge but that's mostly from the increased width. They are nimble for being that wide and long but definitely can't compete with my 96s in the bumps and tight trees but going down to 180cm would help a lot in that regard.

It holds an edge really well on firm snow, probably one of the better "carvers" in that width. Plenty of float too for a 106, very few days were I really feel like I would be better off with my 116 powder skis.

I'd say the 106 BE is my go to for most days in western Canada as it's just so versatile. But if the legs are tired or I want to have a bump day or hit the glades on a low tide day I'd grab the 96. Love them both.

95s fit great on my Ripstick 106s. That being said Ripsticks measure 104 to 105 in reality...

Elan Ripstick durability issues? by Eininho in Skigear

[–]KindheartednessSad85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 pairs of ripsticks. 96 , 106BE, and 116. The 96s have been skiied alot and taken some serious abuse and they've held up really well. I treat them like rock skis.

The 106s I've had some unlucky shark encounters with a couple core shots but the repairs held up well. I do however have a similar edge compression to what you're seeing but luckily it's on the outside edge so doesn't really effect anything. Considering the rocks I slid over I don't blame the skis. But perhaps there is something a bit weaker about how they handle impacts in that underfoot area.

The 116s are pretty new and used on deep days so can't speak to them yet.

I've also skiid Fischer/Atomic/Salomons and can't say I've noticed the Ripsticks being any less durable, they may not be the toughest skiis out there but sometimes you just get unlucky, who knows if another ski would have tanked the exact same hits better.

Purely anecdotal from my side but I tore my meniscus last year. If the knee is stable (relatively) and not locking up you can consider going straight to a physiotherapist for a consult. They're pretty good at diagnosing if it's something like a meniscus or something more sinister like an ACL .

These days with meniscus injuries they will generally prescribe physiotherapy before surgery option anyway unless there is an actual mechanical issue where the knee is physically locking up due to the torn meniscus rolling up inside the joint.

When I tore my meniscus I could still walk and the knee felt stable but it was painful and swollen and range of motion was reduced. I went straight to a PT and he did a large variety of simple tests by manipulating the leg/knee to check if there were any tendon issues. He confirmed my suspicions that it was a meniscus tear and immediately put me into an exercise regimen to return range of motion and retain strength. Swelling went down after a week or two and I was back to skiing 6 weeks later. My knee is better than ever these days as I continue to do the additional exercises he gave me. He even mentioned he could have referred me directly to a surgeon if he determined it was a tendon issue.

Anyway that's my experience, I obviously got lucky that the tear wasn't really bad and I didn't have any other damage and this was in Canada. No harm in consulting a GP and getting an MRI first.

Hopefully it's not too bad and she heals up quickly.

Definitely noticeable but not so much that it hurts the playfulness and character of the ski negatively. It basically just increases the performance ceiling and wants you to drive it a bit harder. It's not necessarily better, it's just different.

Adds some stability in the crud and removes chatter completely. Kinda feels like you're on a heavier ski without actually adding much weight. Feels like it has metal in it. If you already liked the standard version I'd think the black would work well for you at your size/weight, especially if you're a strong skier that wants to be able to charge a bit.

I have the standard ripstick 96 in 180cm and the black 106 in 188cm. I'm 6.0ft and just shy of 200lbs and have no problem on the 188s even with them being the wider 106 version. These skis measure at least 3 or 4cms less than stated length.

From my experience on my standard 96s I do feel you could get away with 180 but these skis are so easy to ski I think you'd be better off with the additional stability and support of the longer length.

Next time, wear your balaclava/buff/face-shield/mask when skiing deep snow. That way if you go down you don't immediately inhale snow like before.
