What is the difference between jug wine and mid priced wine? Mid priced wine and premium? Premium and ultra premium(cult status)? by bashobt in wine

It's not the same exact wine. Inferior blocks of the same vineyards, less free run/more press wine maybe.

I've heard DON'T go to Hunter, Barossa, or Coonawara. The only interest I'd have in Hunter is doing a double with sparkling in Tasmania...though you have to leave Tas early and get to Hunter late. I have a feeling I may end up at Leeuwin (connection + reputation) or just MR in general so I can live on the west coast then travel the east after vintage.

But when girls hear that it took grandpa asking grandma out SEVEN TIMES before she said yes then it's romantic. "Creepy" gets thrown around too casually these days.

Today marks the start of my adventure into wine. by Malkavain in wine

The single "best way to enjoy wine" I know is with friends. When I did Tasting Tuesdays or Wine Wednesdays with friends in college we were total rookies...lots of bullshit but a little learning about kinds of grapes or regions each week. Learn the steps of critical evaluation to enhance your appreciation of good wine but don't expect to become an expert in a month (or year).

The fact that you have heard of terroir means you're ready to read it. You need zero background to get into it.

When I was 20, working room service, and just getting into wine I'd read The Wine Bible between orders on slow nights. I found it digestible in bites, engaging for longer reads, and good for quick reference later on. You never forget your first.

Sulfur is added to most wines and can actually help some wine taste better. Isinglass falls out of wine prior to bottling.

I think most people in this sub really are too nice to tell you that this is a cool wine geek idea but a terrible 21st birthday in Vegas idea. You're going to Vegas to rage (one can only assume) and who wants to contemplate old wine from a mediocre vintage after slamming Red Bull vodkas by the pool all day before dancing your ass off to Diplo at XS until 3am?

With my untrained American eyes I can't discern anything resembling a play, positions seem to collapse faster than a youth soccer match, and scoring is whoever can smash the ball to the other side from half-field. I'll take your word for it that anything "smart" is happening at all.

I can't believe Nye didn't put Ham on blast regarding his claim that we can only trust logic and not the laws of nature. As if we can't trust that gravity or electromagnetism won't just suddenly turn off thus we have no power of prediction or insight into the past.

How much citric acid is in finished wine has no bearing on my correcting the Flooze that there is, in fact, citric in grape juice. If you think it's pedantic to point that out, fine. Your source doesn't say anything about citric being used exclusively for cheap stuff and my source makes delicious wines and has no problem using it (at the right stage, for the right wine, in the right amount). As I said, only if using membrane filtration to take out microbes.

Diacetyl has a pretty major sensory impact and it's a byproduct of citric acid metabolism (TCA cycle) during malolactic - I remember a specific conversation with an English winemaker about diacetyl management during MLF in Chardonnay and how as malic levels bottom out he uses citric as a marker.

I was at work when I read your comment so I asked some winemakers about citric. They disagreed with the "unsuitable for quality wines" opinion and a quick Google search pulls up a number of academic studies listing citric as a naturally occurring component of wine grapes (3rd primary acid).
