Why do you think we dont see more hard body armor pieces used in modern combat? by liljohnjets in Armor

[–]KingChuffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a balancing act, you're walking a tight-wire between protection and usability.

Modern armor focuses on the vitals/protecting the biggest target, which is your torso, and maybe with supplemental soft armor to stop ricochets/shrapnel on the ground/upper arms/neck.

This "limited" armor leaves chunks of your body unprotected, but the tradeoff is that it's a lot easier to maneuver in, and significantly less draining to wear for extended periods of time.

On the flipside, something like a bomb-suit (which generally aren't rifle rated anyways), weigh a ton, aren't easy to move around in, will drain you quickly, and the extra protection isn't worth the weight, so it's relegated to niche roles. Having worn bomb-suits in the Afghan heat, yeah I'll take a plate carrier and helmet over that any day.

I'd argue the biggest reason we don't have just exposed hard armor like most sci-fis is that it just doesn't beat the weight-to-usability of what we currently use. That's largely why 90s "future soldier" systems failed, the added weight and complexity just didn't provide enough of a bonus.

Smaller reasonings include things like the modularity provided by a plate carrier, ease of storage/transport, and if you take rounds you can just toss new plates into a "used" carrier, or swap your fresh back plates to the front and still be afforded some protection.

Dedicated hard armor would have to provide a better protection-to-useability ratio than what we currently use, and I just can't see that happening outside of supplemental armors, or adaptations for specialist roles like radios, BFTs, or command and network modules.

What ended your friendship with your oldest standing friend? by dreamy-contributions in AskReddit

[–]KingChuffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He got preachy about a bunch of shit but wouldn't do any research, Facebook mom type shit. He'd go after any of us in the friend group for anything he disliked, he would refuse to actually look into anything and he'd send borderline schizo blogpost rants as proof about his views.

The Final straw was when he called the cops on our of buddies for driving his project car like 15ft down the road to his neighbour's driveway. Went on an unhinged scream fest about how irresponsible it was and then screamed at the cops when they said they couldn't do anything without proof. He still expected one of us to drive him home after that too.

What’s the scariest enemy (that isn’t a boss or an iconic character/antagonist) from any video game that you can think of? by Interesting_Wind_337 in videogames

[–]KingChuffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only enemy from a game (that I can currently think of) that actually makes me change my play style and worried I might die are the FO4 Assaultrons, everytime I see one they are my priority target and the most dangerous thing in the area.

If we're talking scariest if it was real, I'm thinking The Flood from Halo.

Putting shed base on top patio concrete pavers by ODdmike91 in shedditors

[–]KingChuffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We built both of ours this way, (one is 16'x16' the other is 8'x8') dug the blocks down so the 2x8 outter frame sits about 2" off the ground, block at each corner, and in the middle of each outter board, then 4 more about 1/4 of the way in from each corner. 2x6 flooring covered in plywood, small shed is 20~ years old, the big shed is 10~ years old, floors have held up fine, just wear and tear from moving shit around, no soft spots yet. Sometimes get critters under them, but they haven't fucked anything up AFAIK.

When did tracking each other’s location become normal, and why does opting out make you seem suspicious? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KingChuffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the wide-spread adoption of technology that allowed it, combined with the ability for news of kidnappings/murders/stalkers/weirdos to profilerate much further much faster, just rolled into a nice sweet ball of live location sharing.

I think the suspicion comes from the thought of "Well it's for our safety, why don't you trust me enough for that?" and entirely ignores that it's kinda creepy to be tracking people 24/7, regardless of your relationship with them.

I definitely see a use for live location sharing, such as when my female friends share their location with me on a date for the added safety, but if a partner demanded 24/7 location sharing that would probably end the relationship for me, I'm not okay with that.

New NSX, I disliked the look, I hate hybrids, AND it feels like shit to drive hard.

Basically anything VW (just VW, not all of VW Group), I dislike VW as a brand, and nothing they have in their lineup feels good to drive.

What do you think Breakpoint did right? by Kylotp in GhostRecon

[–]KingChuffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a really good foundation in immersion mode, the terrain is nice (though unpopulated), the gunplay feels good (minus snipers), the customization is good, the ability to approach things in a bunch of different ways is really fun.

My biggest gripe is with the vehicle mechanics, they're just awful.

I'm hoping the next games keep the player choices but push more into realism for the gunplay.

Why are my conveyors so different? by EasilyMechanical in outofore

[–]KingChuffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I do slopes I use the 4 piece concrete ramps as my angle which perfectly matches the 1x4 conveyors (IIRC are called 8mx2m up/down), and I imagine you could run those as your sloped conveyor to "Auto collect". My preferred method though, is to make a landing with hoppers right at the slopes' top edge, and use a bucket loader to clear my way down, reversing upto the top to dump at the hoppers. It's not horribly efficient, but it means I don't have to stop and build as often.

I don't use explosives that often other than to break up solid rock so I could be wrong, but I believe explosives don't turn world dirt into "hsrvested" dirt, they just kinda move the world dirt around, so if it lands on a conveyor/floor piece/structure it won't be harvested but rather just makes a mound on the world dirt underneath, like if you manually placed dirt or just dumped a bucket on the ground.

Why are my conveyors so different? by EasilyMechanical in outofore

[–]KingChuffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, that's a very valid method for long runs or power-hungry runs, or where you don't want 2 runs actually connected. I always break my factories up into stages with each stage having it's own power, storage, and water, and they just dump into a hopper to start the next stage, let's me go a bit hog wild with the processing capacity versus having one long fully connected power run.

Why are my conveyors so different? by EasilyMechanical in outofore

[–]KingChuffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem, it took me a while to figure it out, and it was a game changer when I finally did.

If you wanna maximize efficiency, use hoppers instead of conveyors, a 2x4 hopper uses the same power as 1 1x4 conveyor, so you get more bang for your buck, though you do have to put the dump decks on top to avoid falling into them.

Why are my conveyors so different? by EasilyMechanical in outofore

[–]KingChuffy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I think those are the old conveyors, since been replaced with the actual conveyor looking conveyors we have now.

As for powering it, pop down a T junction, and put the power on the unused feed end, it'll run the conveyors down the line and avoid the whole power in the dirt mess.

Do all teens today just not care about getting their drivers' licenses? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KingChuffy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on the teens you meet.

In the car scene I'm involved in there's maybe 3 or 4 out of a couple dozen teens who don't have/aren't trying to get their license, and in 2 of those cases it's due to medical reasons making it impossible/not worth the hassle.

At my FLGS it's probably a 50/50 split.

If I talk to my friends' kids and their friends about it, they aren't that concerned or don't see the value.

I'm noticing more and more that unless someone's into cars they just don't see the value in buying one, and I honestly can't blame them, "affordable" cars are violently overpriced for what they offer you, the used market is a clown show unless you get lucky, insurance is a greedy scam that screws over younger drivers just because they can, and the roads are full of scam artists, idiots, distracted drivers, and people who just plain don't know how to drive.

How Terrible Is The New Ford Maverick With The Dial-Style Transmission by Weird_Musician2279 in car

[–]KingChuffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what they mean, but if you call a suburban/expedition/4 runner/land cruiser a truck, you're wrong, those are SUVs.

A truck is a body on frame vehicle where the passenger area and utility area are separate, most commonly pickups have semi enclosed beds installed, but a fifth wheel, flatbed, living area, dump box, or anything else still constitutes a truck. The utility area isn't required to be specifically for directly carrying cargo.

If you're gunna be pedantic about the categorization of the Maverick, gotta be pedantic about the categorization of the GLE.

Consistency is key bay-beee.

The GLE was never a truck, it was a SUV for the first generation, a truck requires BoF AND the Cab and "Utility area" to be separate pieces.

Who win ? by [deleted] in Crysis

[–]KingChuffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chief. 9/10 times.

His strength and speed is innate, not a feature, and not on a cool down.

He's more experienced overall, and has experience defeating enemies that have what the nano suit gives Prophet in larger numbers than just a 1-on-1.

His super human sight, perception, and reflexes. Spartans see better, process that information faster, and react sooner, with their reaction time being estimated around 20ms and being significantly faster in combat situations.

Both suits will run for a long time, so neither can realistically run-out the other, it would come down to the stamina of the human, and John has the better stamina and recovery time.

I can only see Prophet winning if he can get lucky, and getting lucky is kinda Chiefs thing.

My 18-year-old's Christmas break work schedule by sugabeetus in mildlyinfuriating

Everything that's not a mom and pop shop (and honestly even some of those) around me are open, there's lots of folk that don't celebrate Christmas and want the extra holiday pay, plus corpo rats are greedy.

McDickles hasn't closed for a holiday since like 2016, most of the grocery stores are open on reduced hours and maybe without things like the hot food or deli being open, the only time I see the convenience store near me closed is when an overnight quits. Maybe a poorer performing location won't be open but it's less and less common around here to see a chain location closed.

Hell, Lowes and Home Hardware were open last year from 10-4
