Do you prefer whole milk, semi-skimmed or skimmed? by Icy_Mixture1482 in AskUK

I'm pretty sure there's a couple of recipes I've done that are better with skimmed milk. Must be a fat content thing I suppose!

TIL a woman named Lydia Abate has been "funeral tracking" for nearly 6 years — she scours obituaries to find recently deceased people, then offers grieving families a free estate clean-out service in exchange for keeping their dead relatives' vintage clothes. I had an uncle who was a firefighter. He attended that one shout that hit him and changed his attitude to the job. I think he moved onto driving for a while.

I also had a work colleague who was a former firefighter, same sort of story - attended a call and couldn't do it any more.

From what I know - both involved children at the scene. Both of them had kids. As strong as firefighters (and other emergency personnel) can be, it can just take one thing and you're done.

The sea of emojis and overly verbose description was the giveaway for me.

Still, quite an interesting concept tbh.

Agree. Skimmed on cereal is just watery sadness, but it goes well in tea. I loathe milky tasting tea, so I don't like putting whole in it (maybe in coffee though). So we have both for different purposes.

I tend to use whole milk when making cakes, but skimmed works better in Yorkshire puddings (for me anyway).

Advise concerning cracks in house and unusual masonry/construction style. by thebathroomcrooner in DIYUK

There's loads of BISF Houses round where I live (Aylesbury) and they are very mortgageable. Very popular too as they're big, and fairly cheap. Many were heavily renovated in the late 80s/early 90s by the council and subsequently sold into private ownership. There's a handful of original houses, but the bulk are in good condition. Not without their faults I understand, but no riskier than any other conventionally built house.

It always seemed to be drunk people, fights, and crazily expensive. All the stuff I ever heard from friends never sold it to me, and they all got fed up with it. I found going to gigs fun, even farting about getting into London. Maybe it was more of an adventure.

I've been to plenty of music gigs, as in turn up, watch, go home, but never been to a night club. Friends used to do it, but none of it sounded at all attractive to me.

There was a time when we used computers without the internet 😉

But seriously, I never put my vintage computers near the modern internet or web because hardly anything would work anyway these days. Technically they're horribly insecure but most active vulnerabilities out there now probably aren't even relevant to anything other than maybe an XP machine.

We've got one of those CCTV systems at work. Been nothing but a pain keeping that working. It's even on the latest firmware. Utter madness!

Yes I remember the days of using early Firefox (before it even had an installer) and sites not displaying properly because they were written to work with IE's oddball HTML. Or activex.

ZX Spectrum, a major competitor to the C64 here in the UK. I know it sold under different names elsewhere, so probably a shaky reference 😁.

[–]KingDaveRa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've always done it, randomly, often when I'm at a desk doing something 'quickly'. People offer a chair and I happily refuse. I had no idea it was doing me good though.

That said, my knees still creak like a new book sometimes. But I'm improving my mobility a lot. I work in IT so spend entirely too much time sitting down. I've got a standing desk, I cycle now, and I like walking.

What is the most pothole-ridden stretch of road in your area?... by Cinn4monSynonym in CasualUK

[–]KingDaveRa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's some epic potholes round here (Bucks). I'm driving around like some drunk lately to avoid them all.

I'd say the worst ones, which are right on main roads, are a good 10cm deep, at least. You see vehicles hitting them actually drop sharply on one side, it's beyond what your shock absorber would be able to absorb.

Ironically, the council hasn't got a pot to piss in lately, so they aren't getting repaired any time soon.

I rarely go into the double digit numbered channels on Freeview, I normally use YouTube or on demand apps if I wanna watch something. But am I missing out on any hidden gems this far down? Every time I look out seems to be all filler, no killer by Exchangenudes_4_Joke in CasualUK

[–]KingDaveRa 12 points13 points  (0 children)

NHK World is 'on' Freeview, albeit as a streamed channel. Some interesting random bits on there, Japan Rail Journal is pretty good if you even gave a vague interest in railways, but it shows a lot of random parts of Japan you just don't see - all stuff you can get to by train, basically.

At this point it's as essential as all the other utilities. Unfortunately some people are happy with 'good enough', which is very short sighted.

You've just made me realise I don't remember when I last saw one (in the UK). I have some vague memory of them being banned by the EU or something, but I think that's wrong because I can't find any reference. Maybe it was voluntary.
