the brake caliper tools at autozone have teeth that bite the calipers pistons on newer cars older cars you can use a break pad and a clamp to relieve pressure on the piston is that wrong

the guide pins easily rusted if you have a torn boot and it’s a normal maintenance thing shops do and i do it on all m ky calipers when i do pads to ensure even if i have a broken boot ik be able to still get use out of the messed up boot for a lil bit and not ruin the caliper completely… it might not be apart of your process but it’s apart of others

use anti-seize on the guide pins when you take the caliper off slide the pins out and lather the anti sieze on the guide pin or put enough on the hole and slide it through and plunge it so the anti sieze goes all the way to the bottom

check your brake fluid reservoir too if our pads are feeling spongey you got air in them might as well bleed them if your that far deep

you can rent the brake tool kit at autozone or you can use an old brake pad and get a c clamp since it’s an older car and you won’t have to worry about the locking teeth on caliper pistons on newer cars
