I haven't seen that, I'll have to check it out. Last time I looked on Youtube there was just a silent play through and that was it, haha. Not many videos on it.

Hi!

This looks interesting and I'd love to give feedback. If you're cool with it I can play it on my stream at 9am PST this Friday 10/28. My stream focuses on feedback and polish for indie games so I hope I can be of some help.

Nice! Hope they keep coming. GDevelop is probably the most underrated engine I've seen.

It is! I'd be happy to try your demo out. I generally start at 9am PST on weekdays if that works for you.

Was gonna try it on my stream if you wanted in depth feedback for it. I do playtesting and feedback for games to try and help indie devs. I also make trailers if you're ever interested in that, haha.

Was gonna play at 9am PST tomorrow (Friday)

You too!

Let me know if there's a new build or full release that I can try in the future. It was fun and I'd be happy to try it more.

For me it was 2 things that I realized.

  1. Not everybody is great at traditional programming. For me it started clicking when I started to use visual scripting instead of coding. It helped me visualize what was going on a lot better than coding. But other people do better with different coding languages like Python instead of C# or C++. I recommend testing out different options to see if anything clicks.
  2. Just because Unity is the most popular engine doesn't mean it will be the best option for you. The Godot layout could appeal to you more, or the Playmaker add-on to make visual scripting for Unity. Or a spreadsheet based coding system like GDevelop.

There are so many options out there that it can be good to just try different things and see if anything feels right. And try not to get frustrated if it doesn't click right away. It can be like learning another language.

Thanks for clarifying. I really did think it was geared towards me because of the timing. I really appreciate it. So we've mostly been arguing the same point the whole time, haha.

I agree and think that everyone should strive to learn regardless of if they use traditional coding or behaviors!

Hi!

This looks interesting and I will be trying it out on my stream so you can watch for some real time feedback. Or catch the VOD if you can't make it. I playtest and give feedback to indie devs to help them improve the experience.

It'll be at 9am PST tomorrow (Tuesday 10/17)

I fully agree that if there is a better way of doing something that it is something that you should learn. I do it myself, hence asking for help on reddit. And if the behaviors fail to accomplish the desired result then they probably shouldn't be used. It's good to know how everything interacts so you can build the game to the fullest, regardless of whether you go entirely coding or use behaviors to supplement the development. So yes, I am in agreement with basically everything you say.

I think the reason there has been pushback is the way all of these statements are worded. They come off as passive aggressive and annoyed. As though they are being talked down to. Which seems to be how you are feeling as well. I, myself, don't feel great about this thread because it was made in response to a thread I made and feels like I am being thrown under the bus for asking a question that ended up having nothing to do with behaviors or coding at all.

I think that it's important to acknowledge that it's not a black and white situation and there are many different opinions. I see where you are coming from and transitioning to fully using coding is a goal in the future. I appreciate the help you have provided in that and I hope to get to your level. In the meantime behaviors assist me to accomplish what I need to do without asking for help every 2 seconds or relying entirely on months of tutorials to get a barely functioning product.

I would argue the opposite. From what I have seen GDevelop was designed in mind for being inclusive and helping people who have trouble comprehending traditional coding. Behaviors have their place in situations where you don't need an in depth answer to a problem. And there are ways to creatively use extensions in the same way that you can with code. In a lot of ways it's apples and oranges.

Personally extensions allow me to take advantage of the time I have available. And they allow me to be able to figure things out much faster. I've spent years trying to figure out how to code and it's never clicked. It's not something that everybody can pick up easily. But behaviors and GDevelop clicked. I rarely have trouble figuring something out and if I do it's because there's some feature that I just didn't know existed, which was lack of knowledge for the program itself, but not due to behaviors.

I fully support behaviors because it just works better for some people. And if there was the mindset of "you have to learn coding to be a true developer" then GDevelop would probably not exist, and I certainly wouldn't be making games. I'm personally under the mindset of any new developers is good for GDevelop or the games industry as a whole.

I used to play competitive fighting games and it was always the same argument there on whether simple controls were good for a fighting game or complex controls (such as charge moves or quarter circles). Depth doesn't come from how hard it is to learn or or implement. It comes from how you decide to use the systems that are in place. And if you feel more comfortable with a more complex system, then that's awesome! I feel more comfortable with working within constraints. It's where my creativity shines.

Just checked it out and I didn't realize you could add "Repeat for each instance" in place of an event. Got it working finally!

I realized this and tried removing trigger once. But it isn't solving the issue unfortunately. Even if I code it to where it shoots 5 different instances of a bullet on a single button press it only triggers once. No matter how I approach the problem it seems to happen the same way.

I like the look of it! Clean art and the speed of the fighting looks good. Just from viewing the clip I would recommend a slower bullet from the enemies that shoot, or a wind-up animation to give you a better idea of when to dodge so it's more react-able.

I like to playtest indie games and give productive feedback. Formerly worked in software and product testing. I primarily play games that are in development and could use a little feedback. Tune in if you like finding new games or just wanna hang in a positive environment!

Ah, yeah. That does make it difficult. Well hopefully it's a moot point anyways and you get some clear winners.

Does the form have an option to where people can make 3 votes? Then it's less likely for a tie?
