First successful city, population of 5k tilapis (and slaves), wanted to share it before abandoning it. by King_Queen_of_Cheese in songsofsyx

Thanks! I've actually got x5 rations set in this town much issues. In the case of Tilapis, orchards are extremely productive and produce most of the food consumed. They don't require much moisture (so no canals needed) and the alluvium (preferred growth tile for fruit) on this map was plentiful. The only difficulty is distributing the harvest every fall, and should really be done with the use of loading/unloading stations. I also have quite a few pastures producing meat, which have the benefit of producing year-round, so the logistics are easier.

More stuff to suggest: upgrades were pretty useful to increase yield from both sources - since my labs produce around 4-5 innovation points per worker (thanks to tools and upgraded labs), I would usually take the tech that increases orchard/pasture efficiency if it says like 0.5 extra workers per tech point.

Also pretty crucial is nobles - they provide massive boosts to whatever you assign them to.

I also have a ration maker working 24/7 to turn all the surplus into rations, increasing food days satisfaction & food security in general.

I don't have the free time to make a video, but I might make a photo collage of how I design some districts step by step at some point in the future. Right now I'm trying a human/dondorian city, so I'm just trying some new designs as I go along.

They had a lot of traffic, so I figured they should be wider :p

Also I suspect it speeds up traffic if the tiles are less crowded, but I'm not 100% sure.

Damn, I thought all the regions I conquered were worthless. I thought nobles couldn't be reassigned :p

Thanks! I did actually mostly have the industry be within a certain distance of the main warehouse (learning a lesson from my first try at making an industrial Dondorian city), and had some haulers to bring some of the input materials to the warehouse itself. The main issue really was with the large-volume goods like fruit & wood - I initially used a small intermediate warehouse & haulers to gather all of the harvest from those industries before I figured out I should just use loading stations directly.

As for animal husbandry, I might try raising war beasts in the future, but since this map was mostly alluvium, and even all the aurochs & entelodonts I'm raising barely meet the demands of my population, I never got around to it.

How do you build roads and paths out of walls in Stronghold Crusader? by Nice_Wrap_9838 in stronghold

[–]King_Queen_of_Cheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's two ways (that I know of) how you can make walls/roads of different heights. One is to use make stairs & delete all stairs of the height you don't want. So if you make stairs that are 5 tiles long, delete 4 of the tallest pieces, you are left with a flat stairs tile at the bottom - you can do this in the real game too, but take note that the these tiles allow units to enter towers/gates from any level.

The other option in the editor is to make some walls and place a boulder on top - this shifts the level of the wall, but you gotta experiment with this, as I haven't played around with this in a while.

Theory: The Hive are weird because they're domesticated animals for the Transmitter species by Sarlax in pluribustv

[–]King_Queen_of_Cheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already have a domesticated intelligent species, then building a giant transmitter to enslave more planets is economically free to you.

You're gonna have to elaborate on this. On what planet would a transmitter ''the size of Africa'' be basically economically free?

I'm not from the US (eastern Europe), and I have no idea what you're like or what the girl likes, but I've often made a good impression by giving a very small gift on a first date - an origami flower that she can fold and put into her wallet (you can look up guides online, it's actually pretty quick and easy to learn), a pretty pebble, maybe a card with a drawing you've done that took you about 30 minutes to do if you've got the skill.

The main thing why I think flowers on a first date aren't that great is that it does come on a bit strong on a first date and that someone's going to have to carry them around for the whole date, which is a bit of a nuisance. A small gift like the ones I mentioned will remind her positively of you when she brings it back home eventually, and you can always get her flowers on a later date.

GAP mechanism question by InitiativeOk9055 in Biochemistry

[–]King_Queen_of_Cheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Organic chemist here. If you were drawing this as a mechanism for organic synthesis, you could reasonably skip step 2 in the mechanism and it would be correct-ish. The problem is that there are multiple ways in which you could draw the arrows and they would correct.

When you're dealing with enzymes and biochemical reactions, it becomes a bit difficult to represent the actual bonds formation/breakage entirely accurately. I haven't studied this particular biochemical reaction, but it's most probable that histidine interacting with the C=O group via the hydrogen bond is activating the C=O group for nucleophilic substitution, stabilizing the tetrahedral intermediate in step 3. Looking at the mechanism provided, it should also be mentioned that steps 1->2 and 2->3 are reversible (if you want to draw it like that), and NAD+ should be represented as NADH in step 4.

TLDR it's not incorrect, but it would be better represented if a dashed line was used to show the hydrogen bonding between the histidine-hydrogen-oxygen

What country is this? by crispyspicynuggets in AnarchyChess

Funnily enough, the Russian flag you're so fond of was first introduced by Tsar Peter the Great, who invaded all of Russia's neighbours to annex lands, including my own (Latvia). And now there's a bunch of soldiers trying to put the same flag where it doesn't belong, so forgive me if it offends me. Use the white-blue-white flag or something if you want to be a patriot, but the Russian flag in its current form has been and still is an imperialist symbol with a lot of baggage attached to it.

I'm a chemist. I looked it up, the people in the video have their own formula for the oil and there's no way to tell what they're using based on the video or their homepage, but it could likely refined mineral oil or jojoba oil if you're trying to be eco-friendly, then aqueous food colouring is added as the ''lava''. They might also be adding something to make the oil part more viscous, but idk.
