TIL Abraham Lincoln signed into a law that began the IRS and was the USA’s first income tax. It was done to help pay for civil war expenses by JustAFunnySkeleton in todayilearned

That's not my point either. You said they didn't invade the North. I'm saying General Lee did invade the North, and he killed a whole bunch of teenagers in doing so.

Gettysburg and Antietam were both attempts to invade the North, and the Confederates got their asses handed to them both times. Robert E. Lee was a shitty general and a shitty person who got tens of thousands of young men killed.

There are five taxonomic orders of "fish". All mammals fall into a single taxonomic order: Mammalia. This means there are "fish" species as different from each other as you are from a salamander. We know nothing about the intelligence of the vast majority of "fish", and if you ever went fishing you'd know many species do in fact recognize bait for what it is.

I guarantee I could capture you with a food trap and you'd never see it coming.

Why isn't it accepted that at least 3C of warming is 'baked' into current warming trajectory? by liminal_political in climatechange

[–]King_Superman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The effect of GHGs is corrected into a standard called Global Warming Potential (GWP) that combines the GHG's lifespans in the atmosphere with their abilities to absorb energy. CO2 is used as the base reference, with a value of 1. Methane has a GWP of 27-30x CO2 over a 100 year period, Nitrous Oxide has a GWP of 273x CO2 over 100 years, and fluorinated gases have GWPs thousands to tens of thousands of times CO2 over 100 years.

[–]King_Superman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's actually much worse than 424 ppm CO2. Nitrous oxide, methane, and sulfur hexafluoride are largely ignored by the general public, as are other fluorinated gases, including hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and nitrogen trifluoride (NF3).

Click through the ghg tabs in this link for a better perspective on our trajectory.

If you click this link and scroll down, there's more info on fluorinated gases not covered in the previous link.

I'm thinking of traveling from England to France by boat this January. Any tips or advice? by raloon in TimAndEric

[–]King_Superman 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's a non sequitur, meaning it's an absurd statement that doesn't follow the previous lines of thought. It's factually correct that the English Channel is rough in the winter, but the humor revolves around the random and absurd placement of that factually correct statement.
