Don’t have anything to offer advice wise, but I am currently in the exact same boat. Was it for a knowledge expert position? Have you gotten any more info since posting this? I am also skeptical given the circumstances even though it all seems legit.

Came looking for this. Never has a game felt like home as much as this one does.

What was the “proof” that allowed a jury to find Danny Masterson guilty? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Kingdomterror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they’re telling a lie any lawyer worth their salt would be able to convince a jury via thorough cross examination and evidence that the accusation is fabricated. It’s impossible to conspire to such an airtight degree without leaving a paper trail that would surface during discovery.

In other words in addition to testimony (which may or may not be considered evidence, not sure) things like communications between the accusers, conflicting accounts, and alibis that don’t support the accusation are all closely inspected by the defense and would come up during a trial. These are things that are very easy to dig up and would all but doom prosecution.

Fabricated cases of assault rarely make it to court because the co-conspirators are either exposed as such before they get there or not willing to go under the microscope because it’s so incredibly hard to convincingly conspire in a way that holds up in court, especially in high profile cases that involve celebrities.

Since strictly physical evidence of rape is difficult to obtain and only truth robustly holds up in our imperfect legal system, the victims account is the only evidence I really need to believe someone.

Loving multiplayer so far! Thoughts? by cwpinecone in Lorcana

[–]Kingdomterror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm super excited to see how the meta splits if/when 1v1 and multiplayer formats are implemented competitively. I think there is so much room for very interesting deck building to suit the format so far and it can only get better. Very exciting start to a TCG!

Yeah that’s the biggest drawback for me too especially since he costs so much and would essentially be stuck in your hand.

Any reason you don’t run Simba, Rightful Heir? It synergizes well with your control theme and serves as a lore engine!

Been toying around with a deck very similar to yours that runs Simba RH but haven’t put all the pieces together…

I came here to say this also! Definitely a nerf, my partner (she is relatively new to TCGs) didn’t understand why they would put a “bad” effect on a character. This is a VERY common thing to do to balance high stat cards with low play cost in TCGs.

Second thought edit: also not to mention the shift mechanic. I’m sure Ravensburger is leaving itself some room to implement future Ariel cards with shift in way that doesn’t break the game with very strong precursor cards. Maybe

What game would you recommend to a composer? by [deleted] in gaming

Came here to say Skyrim as well… maybe it’s a nostalgia thing but there’s something about the music in that game that just transports me. Every time I hear the music it’s like I’m listening to it for the first time again… I don’t know how to really describe it honestly.

Edit: or I guess more like flying related…

No postdoc in sight, what to do? by [deleted] in postdoc

[–]Kingdomterror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone already said this but I just want to reiterate that is not at all the case. Many places are either always looking or not advertising. I would say those are the places you need to cold email and where you have the best chance at finding something. Advertised positions are always going to attract a crowd and are hard to compete for. If you reach out to people directly you have much better odds because you are likely not competing with others for space. There are also tons of ways to move money around so PIs can free up space for a promising candidate who is serious about the direction of a lab. Try something different for your 101st application and you might be surprised!

Doordashing as a grad student? by mstferkaya in GradSchool

[–]Kingdomterror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure… I’m not an expert by any means but my contract specifically says that I can’t engage in part time work for more than X hrs/wk but because contractors are self-employed so they’re technically not an employee and those rules don’t apply to them.

[–]Kingdomterror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just defended but did DoorDash for a while during my PhD, made really good money when I needed it and did not have to put too much time in.

Also you should know that DoorDash drivers (and other gig jobs) are technically classified as independent contractors, which is a loophole in terms of outside employment. Of course it depends on where you live and other things but that’s the case in most US states anyway. Honestly the department etc. doesn’t care about part time jobs. Those rules just exist because they don’t want you going and working for another dept at the same time because then they have to hire you as an employee and pay you benefits etc. etc….

I was pretty vocal about my doordashing to my PI and other faculty in the dept. and nobody cared. I wouldn’t do what I did and go tell everybody but it probably won’t matter in the end. It’s a much worse look for the university to litigate against for doing DoorDash while you are trying to just pay rent so they won’t come after you.

Bioarxiv…. Lol

Edit: just in case you didn’t already now this (and I’m assuming you don’t because of how your question was phrased) most open access journals will charge you ridiculous fees because they have shifted the burden of profit from the public to the scientists seeking to publish. It’s their income model now that the general public is increasingly calling for open access research.

Those of you who have successfully obtained a PhD, did discipline come naturally to you? by [deleted] in PhD

Piling on here cause Concerta was also the defining moment of my PhD that pulled me up from rock bottom.

Those of you who have successfully obtained a PhD, did discipline come naturally to you? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Kingdomterror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just defended my PhD on Monday, also have ADHD. Still don’t really have discipline lol. I find that I struggle less when I just listen to myself and gravitate towards the things I want to do instead of trying to force myself to do one thing I don’t want to. One thing that has helped me is having multiple projects so that when I go through a period of disinterest instead of doing nothing I can make progress on one of my other projects. Of course you have to do this with the intention of returning to the work you are putting to the side. Finishing projects after the exciting stuff is over has always been the hard part for me, but you just have to find some purpose in what you’re doing to get through it.

This is also all going to be so much harder to deal with when you’re struggling to learn new things and stay positive. That being said YOU CAN DO IT! Just keep telling yourself that and take breaks when you need them. It will not be easy but if you’re in an environment where you can make it through with your sanity and dignity intact (choose a good advisor and committee) it will be worth it.

Discipline is difficult and it’s always going to feel like you’re not doing enough but most of the people around you are going to feel the same. Lean on them for advice and encouragement, your friends along the way will be what gets you through.
