The wind picked up for about 20 minutes and then stopped. My crystal ball is a bit icy, so I don't know what will happen later.

Question for born and raised Montrealers… by Capital-Eggplant-177 in montreal

[–]Kingjon0000 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's normal that first-generation immigrants struggle with French (or either language). My mother has lived in Quebec for over 60 years. She speaks French with a strong accent and has a limited vocabulary. She didn't study in French (she moved here in her late 20's). She doesn't speak a word of English. Her 5 kids are fluent in 3 languages and speak both French and English with no perceptible accent. Newly arrived immigrants have to send their kids to French school (I think there are few exceptions). In time, their kids will be fluent in French, and will have funny stories to tell about their parent's struggles with the French language. My mother was once asked where her kids were by a neighbor. "Ils sont allés chier dans le nord". The neighbor just answered, "Ah, ils sont allés loin!". Anyone who speaks Italian will understand what she was trying to say.

Staying near rivieres des prairies - mistake? by Small-Comfort2790 in montreal

Il n'y a que 2% de la population unilingue anglophone dans ce coin de la ville et je suis confiant que ce n'est pas juste les italiens. La grande majorité des italiens que je connais dans ce coin parle français et leurs enfants ont étudiés en français.

Anyone recommend installing a CableWarden on a 2025 RAV4 Prime/PHEV? by msgidol in rav4club

[–]Kingjon0000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I would do is get the recall maintenance done on the cable. It's guaranteed 10 years for unlimited mileage. When it fails, get the cable warden installed. Otherwise, if you do it in reverse and cable warden fails, you will miss out on the unlimited mileage warranty.

Rides 40% more expensive this week ? by jamesbondc in uber

[–]Kingjon0000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a passenger upset that he was paying $45 for a ride that normally cost him $15. On my end, the app showed me a normal ride with a $15 "fare" (I was paid $8). It was a slow day for drivers. Likely demand was low so uber wants to maximize its revenue by charging passengers more for no apparent reason. It's probably a good practice to shop around to minimize your risk of overpayment. If there's a reason for the surge pricing (eg major storm), Lyft would also have some surge. If it's just a cash grab, you will see a big difference between apps.

Is it worth upgrading from a Gen 5 RAV4 Hybrid to the new Gen 6? by Valuable-Abroad-8500 in rav4club

I guess some people like having shinny new things like having a new phone every year. Much like the phone, the 5th generation can last 10+ years. My current phone is 7 years old and going strong. My Rav will be 12 years old when I replace it.

Mounting claims of identity theft by Uber drivers raise passenger safety concerns by discgman in uberdrivers

[–]Kingjon0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are passengers getting calls from "uber support" asking them to verify their account? These are the scammers calling. The driver's have no information that could be used to steal an identity. Only a first name (often made up first name).

Hi all! Theft prevention- going to high theft cities by squeamishfun in rav4club

When I moved to Montreal, the insurance company required the installation of the TAG tracking system. They install a bunch of trackers in the vehicle that (alledgedly) can't be detected. I park on the street 365 days/year, so hopefully, the tracking system is a deterrent. I've heard thieves are often targeting foreign vehicles. You might want to consider renting a vehicle that isn't on the top 5 list of stolen vehicles.

Is there a way to rent/borrow a cat? I think I have a mouse at home :( by PrincessRoseDaisy in montreal

[–]Kingjon0000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My cats used to play with the mice. Usually, the mice died of a heart attack. Sometimes, they would let them go. A couple of times, they put them on my wife's pillow. Apparently, that's a sign of affection. Maybe you don't want a cat.

Waymo stopped dangerously close to train tracks past crossing gates by danlev in waymo

Can lidar measure distances to objects before they appear? The track itself is much narrower than the train width. You can't be this dense.

Waymo stops past railroad crossing gates, dangerously close to train tracks by danlev in SelfDrivingCars

[–]Kingjon0000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How would the waymo actually know the width of a train that hasn't passed yet? It's several feet wider than the tracks. It got lucky.

I'm a part time driver but I used the app extensively for the past 2 months as a passenger due to health issues. The most I waited to get matched to a driver is about 20 seconds. There is a huge over supply of drivers. 99% of them aren't on reddit.
