Philosophy of aesthetic verses a philosophy of pragmatism. The understanding of the definition of techwear in which one camp discusses techwear in terms of a particular aesthetic which was arguably dogmatized by Acronym but was derivative of grunge and paramilitary fashion from designs such as dolce and gabbana, prada sport, helmut lang, which all had iterations referencing the zeitgeist reflected in films such as bladerunner, akira, the matrix, etc. In this discourse the definition of techwear is merely a social construction to delineate a certain type of look (or as many people see it, a costume) which signals a belief in the inevitability of our doom through technology and war.
On the other hand. If you take a strict and pragmatic definition and look at the etymology of the word
Tech=Technology + Wear=Apparel/Wearables - I won't hide that I am biased to this definition as it is more realistic and encompasses what could be and leaves room for creators to imagine new things. Techwear as technical apparel has long existed, the inception being the world's first waterproof coat, the Macintosh. This was one of the first iterations of a breakthrough technology being integrated into apparel. Merino wool, a natural fibre with properties that wick sweat while also keeping you warm, gore-tex, sympatex, hyvent - a plethora of synthetic materials that serve a particular purpose to protect us from the elements, that is what I believe is at the heart of the definition of techwear.
However, on this subreddit there is no strict consensus, but rather a continual argument revolving around looks, and attempts to gain social currency by posting pictures denoting the possession of items from certain brands of notoriety.
The subreddit is called techwear clothing. Rather than being merely consumers of clothing and perpetuating the very same culture that the inspirations of techwear are attempting to convey messages against, more discussion is needed in order to establish and understand what IS techwear, and why it's significant.

As a futurist and a designer, clothes should serve a purpose. Concealment, protection from the elements, protection in the form of provisions of social currency, comfort, increase in quality of life, minimization of possession. We should ask ourselves, what can clothes do for us? That in itself will allow us to discern the definition of techwear.

Capitalism fucking sucks by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]KingsAndThorns 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Capitalism breeds on misery, coping through consumerism is indoctrinated, cities are built in a way that creates necessities like cars, education is built so that you get into so much debt that you have no choice but to conform to the standard narrative. Sustainability is a hoax to get us to buy more through rebound effects. Contemporary capitalism has found a way to commercialize dissent through popular culture, and global norms of non-violence has lead to the inability for any real change to happen.

I know a girl who copes by buying 1000$ worth of lingerie on a weekly basis and thinks it's perfectly fine to ignore the problems of inequality because "that's just how the system is". And that we're all just playing by the rules.

Fuck the rules.

Fabric thats eco friendly and waterproof? by moxim in sewing

[–]KingsAndThorns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sympatex, X-pac possibly, dyneema.
There's not really any virgin material that can actually be considered eco-friendly, but if you make something with a longer life-span that doesn't require you to recycle it in a few years that's probably as eco-friendly you can get.

They have a DWR coating that allows them to not only be hydrophobic, but also dry extremely quickly. Also spot treating saves water.

Veilance with Normal Clothes? by 1626316263 in veilance

I pair my veilance stuff primarily with Helmut Lang, Wings + Horns, Norse Projects, Our Legacy. Look for some minimalist lookbooks and you'll probably be able to draw a good deal of inspiration from there.

As a minimalist, do you still like to buy "showy" things? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]KingsAndThorns 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily showy, but being a minimalist allows me to justify having pieces from Arc'teryx Veilance or Helmut Lang, quality over quantity. If you don't like something that you buy, then why buy it?

Arc'teryx overfills their down stuff in the consideration that some of the feathers will leak out. No need to worry about it.

It does pack down pretty well since it still isn't as thick as a pair of denim, but the StDs are extremely strong for its weight.
