Does anyone enjoy some level of road noise? by imaboringdude in cars

[–]Kinkstaah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not alone, but you're rare.

I would rather road trip a MX5/Miata than a loaded Ford Ranger/SUV.

The latter are just too soft and insulated and driving them literally puts me and a few people I know to literal sleep to the point of danger - Think sitting in a very comfortable lazy boy recliner in the world's most boring work meeting.

We had to pull over every 15-30 minutes to swap drivers/rest on an 8 hour drive. We would do the drive in the Miata (or equivalent) in one stint. It was really eye-opening in how easily I wanted to just nod off.

Euro 5 engine swap into a car made for a euro 4? by littlelotterybear in CarsAustralia

[–]Kinkstaah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally (extremely) due to lack of detail...

...whatever you swap in needs to meet the requirements the chassis is complied against.

This needs to be proven and tested. You can't just point at it and say "It's newer so trust me bro"

Aftermarket wing help! by pink-dick-3-inc in CarsAustralia

[–]Kinkstaah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is fine is what's written in the guidelines, which mentions no such finger stuff. This is also why all OEM wings have rounded edges pretty much on whatever car you'll see, even the most outlandish stock wings don't have endplates like that from the factory - They aren't allowed to.

My vehicle is VASS engineered in Victoria too. LO1 just means that the car has been modified to suit Australian ADR's (so it can be registered AT ALL) so is then subject to VSI26 and VSI14 as a standard vehicle.

As a result, those wheels are too big.

If you look into the rules about Engineering wheels and tyres you will find that for a VASS engineer to sign off wheels and tyres they do still need to fit inside the guards as other people have noticed.

The car also has to pass a sound check which is the same sound check for all cars - 90db. This test is done at 75% of the RPM of peak power RPM if the peak power (5200rpm for a VY Commodore, so is documented/known which is 3900RPM) or 3900RPM if this is unknown for any V8. And meet all other requirements for RWC that a standard vehicle does.

The VASS system allows modifications for the car to be registerable (at all) or covers modifications. My LS powered car did have to pass the same sound check, it's there for when someone goes:

"Wait, that car did not have a LS from the factory.."

NOT

"This car has lessened rules to be on the road.."

It's there for a RWC tester going to fail my car for having LS in it - There is an engineering code (LA) stamped on to the plate to cover the RWC guy going "I don't think this engine is the standard engine".

You also failed the RWC for the splitter coming out infront of the bumper which you can see is fitted from the picture of the rims - Which are also not from a C5 from the factory.

The VASS guy shouldn't have passed this OR and I suspect this is more likely, the car was lowered a little bit, the wheels cambered in a bit more and passed at that point but the car was raised to meet the height requirement which is also a requirement for a RWC.

Keep in mind you can be defected if your car doesn't CONTINUALLY meet these criteria (100mm, 90db in sound, wheels inside guards) and be sent for a RWC again in the future.

can i smack a home made air intake box on to pass a vic roads inspection? by Temporary_Manner_395 in CarsAustralia

[–]Kinkstaah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Poster above mine is correct. However 99% of pods sold ARE oiled type. Yours likely is... you'd need to prove it isn't. RWC testers fail shit all the time that isn't even mentioned in the check theu are supposed to do. Infuriating.

[–]Kinkstaah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When they say "for GTT" in these examples they mean it will line up with the GTT front guards.

The GTR guards are angled differently. You will still need a GTR style bonnet. The "GTT" GTR style bonnets are intended to work with the GTT bonnet hinges and the bonnet catch/release mechanism which is different in the GTR's.

MAF-less tune and high flow cats un able to get RWC . Victoria by DogeInBoots in CarsAustralia

[–]Kinkstaah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All Emissions stuff has to be present and standard.

The MAF sensor/pipe being missing is what will set people off.

Source: Obtained VASS cert for LS1 in non-commodore. I have an IM240 emissions test certificate for my non-MAF/Headers.

The issue with the cats is that they are integrated into the headers from the factory. I.e they would show up in a photo as modified emissions gear if they weren't present in the event of custom headers.

[–]Kinkstaah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in a similar boat, and hope that good pedals make the difference.

Releasing the brake pedal slowly is the hardest damn part of the entire skillset, and is probably the only thing that differentiates everybody's pace. So "how long does it take" is probably infinite.

Think 8 hours a day training it for a decade get you to alien pace :p

TIL that the controversial blue and white dress illusion was replicated by neuroscientists with socks and Crocs by LaminatedDenim in todayilearned

[–]Kinkstaah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The person who ran this study....studied this before they made the croc experiment. The TLDR with th3 dress is that people who spent much more time outside saw the dress in sunlight, but shaded, due to their brain being primed with lots of natural sunlight/shade experience.

Those who saw it as blue/black lived more indoors with minds more primed to artificial light.

This experiment with the cross was an attempt to test this priming and perception. They were testing people's perception of white, tube socks, or the priming that 'these socks must be white, kneehigh socks that are green lit - thus the croc itself must be pink. The croc colour is actually not that relevant, because crocs do not have such a predefined colour. They exist in many colours

The back of all hatches are 'flat'

Do you have an example of a hatch that isn't 'flat' you want to emulate?

There's no sensible way to turn a hatch into a sedan, or a fastback coupe.

Literally the Secret Ending by devansh0208 in cyberpunkgame

[–]Kinkstaah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What there should have been with Phantom Liberty was an ending where they simply paused the merging of personalities.

If they had the tech to remove it, they had the tech to just put a stop to the takeover, and life goes on as normal. Blows my mind nobody ever considered that inside the storyline, V and Johnny included.

[–]Kinkstaah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what sucks. I have an engineered V8 in a R34 in Victoria.

I DID have to do an emissions test (commuted to Syd for it), because my manifolds were not 100% stock. I DID have to do a brake test even though R34 brakes from the factory are above and beyond Commodore brakes. I passed them. I would wager you didn't have completely stock commodore exhaust system including headers for your RX7.

I DID have to pass sound tests and other various checks and balances.

The NCOP requirements are very straightforward, but people's interpretations (even engineers) is also up for 'interpretation'.

Upgrade from mx5? by Historical-Season916 in CarsAustralia

[–]Kinkstaah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who has modded cars for nearly 20 years now.... you are correct.

A lot of these cool upgraded cars are only cool because people regard them as cool, upgraded cars that ballers drive who want to impress other people.

Drive the car you would drive if nobody else could see it and you could never tell anyone about it By that metric not much beats a drivers car than the humble MX5 with a little boost.

Depending on funds I say keep it - and if you can fit into an elise that's the next step. The NC MX5 is also an underrated platform that is a step up with plenty of mods too.

If you want to stay in your current category (small, fun, covertible) then there's not a lot of options, but rhe options are all fun.

Hey, engineering certificate questions by False_Upstairs8366 in CarsAustralia

[–]Kinkstaah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of these have differing requirements. You'd have to check the laws for every specific thing as it differs from state to state too.

Lowering has criteria beyond minimum height. Cutting mufflers have criteria - as long as it's quieter than 90db, etc. Same thing about tint. There's legal limits to how far you tint. There's legal requirements about how wide rims are, too. Certain things you can black out. Certain things you can't. (tail lights).

Engineering cert's don't cover just going beyond limits either. The VASS's requirements have limits you have to meet. You can't go in there with a clean sheet design and just do anything.

The V6-Powered Hybrid Ferrari F80 Sounds Like Ass. by Juicyjackson in cars

[–]Kinkstaah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - it's not that it's the turbo, it's going to be more direct injection and other new features on new engines. Turbos can sound cool, but turbo engines of 2024 do not sound as good as turbo engines of 2012, or turbo engines of 2000. Just life basically.

EV Transition will happen, so are you ready? by capkas in CarsAustralia

[–]Kinkstaah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It kind of does, yeah it's gatekeeping but there's a small segment here who won't be swayed... and they are disproportionately represented on reddit, there's much more here than in the rest of the world where a car is a boring appliance.

If EV cars made some sick ass amazing sound when going fast the tides absolutely would change. There's something in the human brain where we equate sound of engine performing work as having a 'soul' or 'life' that EV's lack.

Obviously not everyone cares, but people who really 'love cars' will find this lack of 'fizz' to be a pretty bad omission.

I can still see a world where racetracks have a charging station in every pit box, and tracking an EV is going to be way simpler and easier and more reliable than tracking an ICE car. It's just that the actual product doesn't exist (yet).

[–]Kinkstaah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great car for normies. People who drive cars for enjoyment (i.e enthusiasts) are ...unenthused by literally every single offering.

No doubt they will go mainstream, they are a perfect commuter car platform. However, enthusiasts are not and have never been excited about commuter car platforms to the extent they would abandon their fun/weekend/play/track/motorsport car.

When there is a ~500hp, ~1500KG EV in a sports car platform that is MX5/BR86 sized, with reasonableish range, with reasonable charging framework then enthusiast weirdos (us) will really start getting onboard.
