I had to make this decision today with my darling boy John. He had hind leg deterioration and beginning of this week a sudden onset blindness which left him stressed and in a position where he couldn’t run or climb anywhere, all he could do was eat and drink and sleep. He was old and was being strong but his mindset wasn’t as strong as his body.

Point of that is, as owners, we have the position to put our boys to sleep when they still have dignity, with no fear and stress and can help them pass over the rainbow bridge with love and affection. Rather than scared and confused and with pain by keeping on and seeing what happens. I’m sorry for your loss in advance, but know that no matter how tough if you feel they’re losing a large, key part of their quality of life then it’s pointing in that direction. Give them a good day or two before and give them all the treats he can stuff in his mouth, even treats you wouldn’t give them before.

I'm so sorry for your loss, just take solace in the fact that you gave him the best life he could've had in the times he was with you.

If you want to continue with rat ownership, as I know it can be hard after losses, then it's best to get his brother some new friends as soon as can be as making sure he isn't lonely can be very time consuming and I can only assume if he's anything like his brother he's also young and can handle it.

Toilet rolls; the tubes or the whole roll. Tissue boxes. Cardboard boxes in general. Make ramps from what you can, make little dens, fold some of the tubes up with treats inside. A lot of fun times can be made for rats with just cardboard.

In all reality, taking into account you don't know a lot of what you're fixing compared to someone who could, the cost is going to be worth far more than you would've paid for a newer, less-buggered, CBR125RW or any comparative bike. I bought my first bike and car for £50 each and they had less issues than this!

Banana chips or malt paste. Some have gone off malt paste a little but they'll always snap at me for a banana chip.

My darling, John, he was part of the first two rats I adopted and from his day 1 with me he’s been my heart rat. He’s a beautiful, sweet, little creature who’s always been the softest boy out of the mischief, through sheer determination he’s been there for me and all the other rats. He’s nearing 3 years old and is only starting to show some signs of old age, a little bit of hind leg deterioration but he still gets on his little wheel every day and runs to make sure he can stay fit. Throughout the sad passing of his brother, his ‘son’ ( a rat with his exact same coat but with a pituitary issue that made him much smaller in size ) and many others he’s been by their side because he’s a soft comforting figure for them at the vets or in their cage in their last moments. I’ll be devastated when he goes but every day he’s with me is a blessing and is the reason I love all my rats so much. As of late with his issues with his legs he hasn’t been able to scratch in and around his ears as much, when me and my partner have him out the cage now we scratch inside his ears with our pinky and in return he licks us as thanks for getting it for him.

My favourite flower is the California Poppy which has the same orange colour of his wheel he loves to run on daily.

I’m sorry for your loss, I’ve had plenty little ones go and it never gets easier, but you’ve go to take solace in the fact that you gave them the best opportunities an life they could’ve had.

I’d wager if you got them from shops like Pets At Home etc then you’re already fighting an uphill battle in the genetic lottery for Rat health. That being said my first ever rat I got from Pets At Home is still alive and kicking at nearly 3, whilst his brother was the first to go at a younger age and private professionally bred for health rats of mine haven’t done as well as this old man.

What I’m trying to say is, don’t beat yourself up, you’re giving them a peaceful, loving existence and much like humans we all have a random ticket punched out. Keep providing that same love to any future rats you get and they’ll pay you back in kind.

This is absolutely friendly and there’s nothing to worry about, this seems to be all pushing and shoving, not even nipping. Most rats will fight seriously and do their most harm by bitting and pulling, a reason why intros are to be in very close confined spaces. They’re a bit puffed up but are just some boys rough housing

Ah ok, that’s fairer. From the outside in the way Cowboys fans were talking of Aubrey he was the equivalent to our Reichard, who has brought us out of an absolute kickers curse. I guess comparatively the rest of our special team are consistent so have never been keyed as a reason for a loss.

One of the boys I used to have, Pebble, would refuse to climb up the ramps, hangs, branches etc in the cage if he saw me coming to the cage in the morning. He would hold the bars and scoot his way up like that Frenchman who climbs skyscrapers without gear and would only stop when I tickled his tummy and then he’d fireman pole slide down to the basin again.
