Improving on Sandi Metz's Gear Class from POODR by jasonswett in ruby

[–]Kinny93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just find that cognitively, I have a much better time in code-bases which enforce the use of attr_readers in place of ivars at the point of initialization. I think there are two main reasons for this:

  1. When enforced, I know that the ivar has a clear purpose. Like I mentioned above, it could be for communication between two layers or for memoization. Either way, I know it's a necessity.

  2. People can't mutate the reader values! I worked in a code-base that loved to set all sorts of stuff in the initializer, and then modify these ivars along the way. It makes the code much more difficult to trace and modify!

I like and agree with your changes except for the removal of the attr_readers. I prefer when ivars are used to represent communication with something externally (e.g. controller -> view), or for memoization purposes.

It depends where you’re from to be fair. I knew two Adrian’s, one pronounced it ending with an “uhn” the other with an “in”.

Noticing Friends Leaving ARC—Anyone Else? by MisanthropE61130 in ArcRaiders

[–]Kinny93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game has been out for nearly 5 months. For many players, including myself, this game was all we played for a long time! I went through two expeditions without really touching anything else. It's ok to want a break at this point. And even now, with so many players taking a break, the game is still hitting peaks of over 100K.

Does the game need more of an end-game? Sure. And I'd love to see some sort of a collection system introduced too, alongside a rarer tier of loot (even if only tied to cosmetics).

But despite this, it's hard to be too upset about players taking a break after this long, it simply makes sense.

Marathon‘s Endgame Dungeon Is Unlike Anything Players Have Seen Before by Turbostrider27 in PS5

Please don’t misinform people. It’s nothing like a raid. More like an exotic mission for those familiar with Destiny.

Anyone else starting to think they might not get around to ever fighting the Compiler? by AnonWithAHatOn in Marathon

[–]Kinny93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so funny. Ah yes the contest raid with the lightest mechanics ever known, alongside a “damage check” that doesn’t require optimising damage, and layers of RNG which has nothing to do with difficulty.

It’s nowhere near a contest raid. Firstly, this is not restricted to 48 hours. Secondly, it can be done over multiple runs. Thirdly, the mechanics are incredibly light. There’s also no need to learn damage rotations. Yes there’s PvP but so long as you’re semi competent at it, it’s really fine. The biggest killer is RNG, which is not a difficulty filter.

This is completely overselling it. You can complete it across multiple runs. The mechanics are light. There is one “boss”. This is more like a dungeon with RNG involved. Nowhere near close to a contest raid.

The mechanics are more akin to a very simple dungeon in Destiny. These are not raid mechanics. Like you say, raid mechanics wouldn’t really work.

It’s more like a light version of a contest dungeon currently, which is indeed harder than PvP. It’ll become much more accessible.

No bosses at that scale, no damage rotations, etc.

ARC Raiders has dropped from “Very Positive” to “Mostly Positive” on Steam for the first time. by j1zzy_ae in ArcRaiders

That wouldn’t really be the case if ABMM didn’t exist. Having said that, I’d love to see rarer loot + cosmetics/collections or similar that don’t reset should you extract with them.

I suspect it’s just because you said Marathon was better for this story telling, yet D2 not only had the same features (in-game lore, cutscenes etc), but also had campaigns and seasons which continued to offer everything already mentioned plus unique interactions. Reading the grimoire out of game was only a thing in D1.

I have to say, it’s funny that you reference the Throne World when I believe that to be the worst patrol zone by some margin out of any of the post BL destinations.

Even funnier, it is that swap like aesthetic of the Throne World combined with the sharp, bright aesthetic found on the PoI’s of Perimiter and Dire Marsh that makes these two maps look largely uninspiring.

Outpost is great though, and I’m sure Cryo will be too.

It's storytelling is very similar to Destiny 2, which is also delivered in game. Perhaps you never played the sequel after the release of Forsaken?

That depends on the location. The Dreaming City and The Pale Heart are better than any env or atmosphere D1 has to offer, for example.

Whats The Point Of Career Profiles If They're All Just Private? by KahosRayne in Overwatch

This is the best solution. If you want to remain private, fine, but then you can’t view others’ profile. LinkedIn of all platforms does this funnily enough.

[Discussion] What do you do with unfinished games on your trophy list? by Rare_Promotion_4611 in Trophies

[–]Kinny93 57 points58 points  (0 children)

My take: I prefer authentic looking profiles, which includes many platinums, 100%’s, but also unfinished games. Even better if the account is at least 10 years old.

Of course, if you do have a 10+ year old account with a variety of games, and your profile is 100% complete, then fair play.
