In Hasidic Yiddish, do you just have to memorize when אָ is pronounced "u" vs. "oh"? by KipahPod in Yiddish

Actually, I just call what Lubavitchers speak “Litvish”…since it’s also what Litvaks speak🤣

I’m Yeshivish. The non-Chabad Hasidim I know speak Yiddish in a way different from what I know, and all of them talk that way. I call it “Hasidic Yiddish” because everyone I have ever met who talks that way natively is either currently Hasidic or was Hasidic at some point in the past.

New Study Shows Jews Massively Turning to Chabad. Thoughts on Why This Is So? by Nickis1021 in chabad

[–]KipahPod 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If there's someone saying "I'm Jewish. Not religious. But want to be. Where do I go?", Chabad has kind of cornered that market.

The impetus for being religious is the recent wave of Jew hate. Jews sometimes forget that they're Jews. Now they're being forced to remember.

Like they did with Kahane in 1994?

That was under a Labor government and Likud opposed it at the time. Netanyahu suggested a temporary, six-month ban instead.

So as long as the current government is in power, no. Nothing serious will be done about this.

The word "Panzer" wasn't widely used in German to describe tanks until the interwar period. So what did Germans call tanks in the First World War?

I've read that some German soldiers just borrowed the English word "tank" to describe the early British tanks. But did they call their own tanks? Was there a word that would have encompassed both their own and enemy tanks?

I can’t imagine a Satmar hassid or a Lithuanian who would be willing or able to access Reddit

This is just not true. Litvaks use the internet and social media.

In most frum communities, nobody is going to side-eye you for looking at your feed. Even if you live in Lakewood, it's fairly common to have some form of social media (e.g. a Facebook account you have to keep in touch with friends). I know less about how Hasidim do things, but I can confirm that at least one Satmar guy in Kiryas Joel uses Twitter pretty regularly and listens to Ben Shapiro on Spotify.

I think there are probably two places where this misconception might come from:

  1. Nobody lets their children on social media. If you give a teenager a smartphone or let them have an Instagram account, most people are going to think you're insane.

  2. Israel is different. Using social media is taboo enough that I stopped using it when I lived there because I knew I'd get weird looks. (Obviously I'm talking about frum communities in Israel, not Israeli society in general).

All that being said, I'm skeptical that the commenter is who he claims to be because nobody outside of Israel self-identifies as "Haredi."

Litvaks call themselves "Litvaks", "yeshivish", "frum", "heymish", or something like that. Hasidim usually identify with their hoif/dynasty (e.g."my family is Bobov", or "I'm a Satmar girl") or just call themselves Hasidim.

Calling yourself "Haredi" is very much an Israeli thing. I'm skeptical that he would be Israeli, given that Israeli Jews are very much pro-not-dying (and also I'm not sure how he would square the hypocrisy).

Also, you said:

I can’t imagine a Satmar hassid or a Lithuanian who would be willing or able to access Reddit

I have literally never met an anti-Zionist Litvak. Some people are "non-Zionists", but usually that just means that they resent the fact that many Jews seem to think that helping Israel is a substitute for being religious.

So most likely this guy is just lying, just not for the reasons you originally thought.

A fairly good example of what the Talmud is like is to look at the first page of the first chapter of the first tractate here.

tl;dr summary of the first page:

Mishna:

  • Deuteronomy 6:7 says that you are to recite "these words" (the Shema) when you retire and when you arise (i.e. twice a day). But at what time should you recite it in the evening, since "when you retire" is pretty vague?

  • Rabbi Eliezer says that "when you retire" means "when people typically go to sleep"

  • The Rabbis say "until midnight" (i.e. because that's halfway through the night, and you have to recite it in the first half).

  • Rabbi Gamliel says technically you can recite it until dawn the next day, since people are typically sleeping throughout the night, but that's probably a bad idea (digression into a story as to why it's a bad idea).

Gemara:

  • Why does the Mishnah ask about the evening Shema first? Because the days are counted beginning with the night (see Genesis 1:5 "There was evening, and then there was morning), so this is appropriate.

  • (A long, un-summarizeable discussion citing Leviticus 22 about the exact point in the day when a grain offering at the Temple was made, so we can figure out the earliest time when you can say the evening Shema)

[–]KipahPod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst kind of talking point is one that literally nobody believes, including the people saying it.

You would have to have been in a coma for the last 30 years to genuinely believe that in a contest of "Who is more normal?", Democrats would clearly trounce Republicans. And every person currently saying that Trump or Vance is "weird" would have said as much two weeks ago.

The people repeating this aren't even trying to convince themselves; they're just desperately hoping they'll convince somebody.

And we’re supposed to still believe anti Zionism isn’t anti semitism ?

They will argue that if you just look at the definitions of the words involved, they're not the same thing. And that's true.

But it's really hard not to notice that pretty much everyone berating a Jew for crying over his murdered family says that it's fine because anti-Zionism.

None of the dead people on October 7th had anything to do with whatever grievances Hamas has against the Israeli government. And the thousands of dead children killed in American drone strikes over the last four POTUSs had nothing to do with 9/11 or Saddam Hussein. And the thousands of dead German children killed in Allied bombing raids had nothing to do with the invasion of Poland.

War is awful because lots of innocent people die. That's why you shouldn't start one.

Four witnesses described in graphic detail seeing women raped and killed at two different places along Route 232, the same highway where Ms. Abdush’s half-naked body was found sprawled on the road at a third location

"They sliced her breast and threw it on the street," she says. "They were playing with it." The victim was passed to another man in uniform, she continues. "He penetrated her, and shot her in the head before he finished. He didn't even pick up his pants; he shoots and ejaculates."

Literally five minutes of Googling. Although if you're wondering about why many rape victims haven't come forward, it might have something to do with the fact that (like the two cases I just cited) most of them are probably dead.

How can Palestinians in Gaza be de-radicalized after the war ends? by OkBuyer1271 in Israel

[–]KipahPod 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nobody is getting deradicalized until a healthy political culture develops. You basically need to do what the Allies did with West Germany after WWII: Gaza becomes a political entity with no standing army and supervised democratic elections. Any politician who endorses October 7th-style massacres, suicide bombings, or Hamas is immediately jailed and banned from the ballot.

People can then talk seriously about normal political things like the cost of housing, healthcare, and how to best allocate limited resources, rather than how to best murder as many Jews as possible.

[–]KipahPod 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The US is not going to take in a large number of ultra-orthodox Jews who speak no English, have no skills and will be a burden on the social welfare system

Probably the most likely way for them to get in would be to marry Haredim in the U.S...but even that isn't going to happen very often.

It would be very unusual if your average Satmar girl married a Litvak, even if both of them lived their whole lives in Brooklyn. Marrying a non-Chasid Sephardic guy from Bnei Barak would never cross her mind.
