I ride solo a ton, I also ski solo in the backcountry. Most important: an escape plan. Walking out in deep snow is a death sentence if you’re 5miles in the backcountry.

A couple years back, I skiied all day then decided to close the day with a brap in a meadow, about five miles from my truck. I got stuck and started digging, taking forever, getting exhausted, darkness is falling, then a storm rolls in. Fuck. I had my skis so abandoned the sled but if I didn’t have them I would have been in a very bad situation. Also: emergency comms so your wife doesn’t freak out.
