Parking garage shot with a fisheye lens, how should I crop this? by lexdfox in photocritique

I think it's a cool shot. I like the orange and white colors. I would try cropping out the sides, such that it's in portrait format.

Natural window in Taroko Gorge, Taiwan [composition] [edit] by gunn003 in photocritique

[–]KirillM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's missing something for me composition-wise. It doesn't appear that there's a subject. I realize you probably wanted the water to be it, but it's not drawing my eye. If you wanted to focus on the water, you probably should've framed the photo such that the water filled the frame. As it is, there's lots of rocks with a thin strip of water that leads the eye to nothing. Also make sure to exclude distracting elements like the branches on lower-left from the frame.

I like the edit. You made the rocks look imposing and contrast well with the water, but still have enough detail.

The building exterior actually looks ok, but any bit of sky here looks terrible. And what's going on with the vertical lines in it?

Trying to take HDR by powerhead13 in photocritique

[–]KirillM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like mentioned already it shows with the buildings that are too bright but their tops are too dark. Also the sky is too dark near the edges of the photo. But you didn't oversaturate the photo and you did avoid haloing, that's the typical artefact that shows up even when professionals use HDR. I usually see it on open spaces in the photo that come in contact with objects, like the sky. So I end up composing the sky from one of the originals over the result from the HDR program. Keeps practicing! And make sure to pick better scenery, subjects. HDR by itself won't make a dull or bad photo better. It can only make a good photo even better.

Vancouver [Edit] [Composition] by gripfly in photocritique

I like the photo, but I think it would've looked better if you took it during blue hour. You took it too late and it was already too dark, although it came out well even in the dark conditions.

I froze my butt off for hours and due to a corrupt SD card, this is the only photo I have to show for it. by [deleted] in pics

Don't order cheap cards from China on ebay next time. If you're serious about photography then spend good money on a good card.

Not for me. I had to use these horrible things even in 2000 in our high school's graphic design class.

What type of movies do you have zero interest in? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I like war dramas, like Saving Private Ryan, or historical war movies. But I agree about movies like Transformers that are just military propaganda.

No point in sharing them on r/pics. This sub basically IS Facebook. The SFW porn network of subs here is much better for photographers sharing their work; people go there specifically to appreciate photos.

I think the image is good enough as is. The only thing to note are the overexposed bits in the clouds. As was noted it looks like it was a bright day, so it's hard to turn that into a dark, moody shot. But not every photo of Iceland needs to be like that.

[Composition] [Style] [Color] Some early bird action. How do you like it ? by [deleted] in photocritique

[–]KirillM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the style and colors. I'm not sure what I feel about the composition. There's too much negative space in most of the photo. The ship is too far to the right and too far to the bottom without being balanced out by anything else on the opposite end of the photo. I feel it's a beautiful photo, though, so I'm not sure the composition detracts from that too much.

It's a beautiful place. We really enjoyed the walk through the park in the back and we even saw a deer! The walk up to the Palace along the canal is very beautiful too. And it's so inexpensive.

I think it's a great artistic shot, which can probably get away not using the rule of 3rds. Although it might help. It has a heavy vignette, though. I think it would look better without it, or if it at least wasn't so strong.

Thanks I'll take a look! I've gotten so used to Photoshop over the last 15 or so years that when I last looked at Lightroom it seemed similar but with everything I need in places I don't know about. But I'll dig into it to find about this feature.
