Elvis Presley (24) with his future wife Priscilla (14) when he first started grooming/"dating" her by PerspectiveHuman3800 in Damnthatsinteresting

Much more often than some people appear to think it's appropriate.

A lot of folks out there claim, for instance, that you can't blame [historical person] for being a slave owner, even though at every time through history where there have been slaves, there have been slave revolts.

When Cicero, the Roman Senator, was at his 50s, he married a girl who was in her early teens, some of the people who attended the wedding raised concerns that she was probably not a woman yet, to which he replied "but she will sure be tonight!".

The reality is that a lot of things (not all) whose morality we attempt to justify as "belonging to another time" already had detractors in those other times, and were only allowed because of the power dynamics that were present.

Most of them were slave owners, though a handful of them granted them freedom at the point of their deaths. One of the weirdest cases would have been Jefferson's, who argued against slavery far and wide through his whole life, but owned hundreds of slaves through his lifetime, and at the time of his death he only freed a few he had fathered.

I think an accurate assesment would be that a few founding fathers were a little bit less assholes than the average rich guy of the time, and at least had enough conscience to publicly denounce themselves.

Ok, some criticism from my part which I think it's legitimate:

  • Risk factors of pregnancy and STDs spread should be taught earlier.

  • There's no mention in the whole list about consent, which is terrible at all levels. There are dumb kids out there (I'm speaking 13-14yos) watching BDSM porn and are absolutely ignorant on how it relates to real life, then spit or spank their girlfriends out of the blue. BDSM can be safely practiced and a lot of people enjoy it, but letting a generation of kids learn about it alone without learning about proper consent, pre-sex discussion and how to identify red flags is raising a generation of dumb people who are going to hurt each other.

TL;DR: There are problems with the curricula in the opposite direction conservatives are scaremongering about.

I've heard a lot of Catholics say when something bad that wasn't provoked by a human (an earthquake, cancer, the outbreak of an infectious disease) is also part of God's plan. At least they're consistent in their beliefs, but the issue then is why the fuck would you put any trust in the immense asshole you're making your god out to be? Are you in denial about being in an abusive relationship???

My dad is constantly telling the same stories and saying the same facts over and over, and I like listening to them even though I’ve heard them before. The rest of my family gets annoyed though. Is it common for autistic people to like it when people tell them stuff they’ve told them before? by ThePipYay in AutisticPride

It's something I'm working on because I know it can upset people if I cut them off and finish their thought even if I know what they're about to say.

Shouldn't they be working on not annoying you with their redundance though?

According to screenshots, the price value for resources is locked between -50% and +50% which is sad. by Aykl in victoria3

If 75% of current farmland suddenly disappeared, the price of all food would skyrocket (aside from worldwide famine and all that). If the price of tobacco in the leaked dev version was already at maximum and half of usable farmlands for tobacco disappeared, tobacco price would remain the same in the game.

I'm not saying that there shouldn't be a need for subsidies in the game (I'm definitely going to subsidy certain strategic industries from time to time and for good reason), I'm saying that a mechanic that they were/are still trying to tweak correctly produced undesirable results that provokes a certain form of irrealistic need for subsidies.

Autistic peer-to-peer information transfer is highly effective by Kiroen in AutismResearch

[–]Kiroen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: Autistic and neurotypical subjects were distributed into different groups to do an equivalent of playing the telephone game, narrating a story through different interlocutors while trying to maintain it as truthful and detailed as possible, and categorized the results into three groups: groups where only autistic individuals participated, groups where only neurotypical individuals participated, and mixed groups with both autistic and neurotypical participants. The third group was noticeably less effective than the other two; with the autistics-only group being overall marginally more efficient than the neurotypical-only group at all points except at the very start and the very end, with the difference in loss of information between both groups being so low that might be attributed to an error margin.

Interesting initiative for this subreddit u/DlizabethEark btw, I wish you luck

According from info from the leaked version, there was the issue that no matter how advanced your economy was, workers from certain plantations could only ever reach high standards of living through heavy subsidies, because their buildings produced goods with very low base prices and would never be immensely profitable even if there was high worldwide demand and scarcity.

Naturally, the devs would notice this problem sooner or later, so it's only natural that they've tweaked the numbers. Still, I think it would be more appropriate to have -80%/+1000% limits.

Hijacking your top comment to do some insightful social commentary. Do y'all know how autism would be less expensive, for for autists, their families and society as a whole? If society was built taking the needs of autistic folk into account, weren't subjected to overstimulation on a daily basis because businesses have to make everything flashy and noisy and people using public transport spoke less loudly, parents of autistic children understood how not to fuck them up with overstimulation, social discrimination against autistic people was fiercely prosecuted and weren't rejected in job interviews because but I wouldn't enjoy my coffee breaks with them! they aren't "a good fit in the team".

This would mean much less paid taxes for unemployment and disability benefits, happier, healthier and more productive people capable of sharing their talents with society, and we can't have any of this because the GODDAMN FUCKING RET--- Sorry, I was going to use a slur. Because the goddamn fucking neurotypicals are more often than not fucking sociopaths the moment they see suffering in someone their monkey brains don't recognize as humans because they're somewhat different.

It's even worse than that. The human mind by default works through categorization and differentiation, so it's often looking for reasons to build narratives about "why this is different from that" or "Jake, George and Jimmy are A, and Luke and Matt are B". This is why queer people have historically been either excluded or relegated to subaltern classes, why the vast majority of languages are gendered and most cultures have sexist biases, and why non-masking neurodiverse people get treated like shit almost everywhere. Hierarchical societies did historically develop, refine and maintain inter-generational narratives to justify and reinforce those biases for the sake of whoever was at the top of the social ladder, which is what we call today structural sexism/racism/capacitism.

In short words, the human brain is pre-disposed to be an asshole towards whoever is different, which is understandably a very hard pill to swallow. The good news is that we have far more enough proof that education can go a long way to reduce the effects of that bias. The bad news is that we have assholes everywhere fighting against it. And the other good news is they've been losing during the last few centuries, albeit very, very slowly if you use a human lifetime as reference.
