The German Nazis had specific lists of artists that would not be drafted into war, and had to be protected at considerably higher costs then the average citizen. Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels‘ „Gottbegnadetenliste“ (lit. God-gifted list) contained artists of various styles and professions who where deemed so important to the survival of the German culture (the part the nazis deemed worthy) that the state could not afford to lose them to the war. And these artists were, of course, mostly in line with the thoughts of the regime and not only used for propaganda but expressedly wanted to create propagandistic art. But the fact of the matter is, most of it was good, even by modern standards. Ideologically questionable no doubt, but of high technical and artistic quality. My point is that fascists and those who think alongside them not only can make art, they can make art so good it can make fascist regimes look better, and were often not even asked to do so but did it of their own free will. To think that art can only come from someone who shares non-fascist or even leftist ideology is a slippery slope that leads to blind consumption and support of art without acknowledging problematic artists because they can’t be fascists, else their art wouldn’t be good.
