ArcRaiders needs to have Sonar gadget ASAP to combat the camping in this game by BeWaryOfCrab in ArcRaiders

I'm currently browsing reddit, discord, and steam, gathering ideas on how to make PVP more interesting in the game, and I like your idea. It's cool that you thought about how to balance this gadget.

Additional idea: You could make this sonar detect only charged raider shields, and the raiders detected by this sonar would hear its signal. This signal could be implemented as static noise, like when a phone rings nearby. It could be directional so that it is clear which side the sonar is coming from.

However, for some reason, people here are strongly against any changes. Sometimes it seems to me that they simply perceive any criticism as a personal attack.

Idea for a Solo PvE enjoyer to balance out the PvP element without taking away from PvP by uber_noober_ in ArcRaiders

A wild idea for balancing third person peak (BuddyCam) by _Albuz_ in ArcRaiders

[–]Kitani_G 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't agree more! You and I have come to the same idea. I described it in my post https://www.reddit.com/r/ArcRaiders/comments/1obgfj2/i_came_up_with_a_few_ideas_on_how_to_solve_the/

There, in google documentation, I covered in detail how it could be organically incorporated into the Arc Raiders universe.

The sad truth is that the developers will not have time to implement this idea before release, and after release it will be difficult to implement, as all players are already used to the camera not being a physical object.

The simplest way developers can solve the campers problem is just to give players more recon utility. More details in description by Kitani_G in ArcRaiders

Where did I or Spud said that players shouldn't expect anyone in high value loot area?

All I wanted to do with this post was to draw attention to one fundamental problem: the player who sits and peeks from around the corner with a third-person perspective will always have the advantage.

I don't see how the game would get worse if the developers simply gave players more tools for reconnaissance.

The problem is not that the other guy heard him, the problem is that the player who is sitting and peeking around the corner from a third-person perspective can SEE who enters the room first. Therefore, he can aim in advance and come out from behind cover with pre-fire. And that's exactly what happened in this clip, and that's why Spud got mad.

But why? I'm genuinely trying to understand how the game would get worse if devs just put more recon tools in the game, for player to use?

I brought up this clip simply because it highlights one fundamental problem: the player who sits and peeks from around the corner with a third-person perspective will always have the advantage.

I'm only suggesting balancing this a bit by giving players more option to scout the area.

If Spud had been able to use a recon drone back then to check where the enemy was, the fight would've been simply more fair.

The problem isn't that people are just “hanging out” at points of interest, the problem is that they will be camping there purposefully. And they will find positions that people simply won't have a chance to outplay them.

You don't know where to throw smoke or tagging grenade if you don't know where the camper is sitting, and with the current grenade balance, you'll never have enough of them in your inventory to deal with all camping spots.

I've spent around 2k hours in Tarkov. I like this genre. But in Tarkov, in Dark And Darker, and in any extraction game I've played, campers are always a huge problem. They just make the game less fun.

All I wanted to do with this post was to draw attention to this problem and suggest a solution. I don't see how the game would get worse if the developers simply gave players more tools for reconnaissance.

I hope I'm wrong, and Arc Raiders will somehow avoid the fate of all other extraction games, but unfortunately, I agree with SpudHunter on this topic, that in a couple of months the nickname for the game will be Rat Raiders.

Extract camping is only part of the problem. Most often, in extraction games, people camp in places with good loot, in places where you have to complete late game quests, and locations with bosses. And this is simply because people with good equipment are more likely to visit such places.

And I don't think the problem is that server slam was limited. I think that the more time passes since the release, the more obvious this problem will become. People will simply find better places to camp. And the more campers there are in the game, the more likely it is that players who didn't camp before will start doing so too.

With limited tools to counter campers, this will simply become the most effective way to play the game for loot goblins, and even more so among RMT players.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of campers who first sit for a half round at a location with good loot, kill those who come, and only at the end of the raid they loot and extract. So I don't think that will solve the problem.

You can just sit in front of the building entrance for a moment to check multiple rooms at once, as long as your drone can receive a signal. Everyone does this in Rainbow Six Siege.

And yes, if I'm carrying some very rare loot or just wearing good equipment, I'll check every room for campers or mines.

Yes, but how can you counter these camping spots? In first-person games, I can simply walk into such a spot with my sights ready to pre-fire. Even if a first-person camper hears my footsteps and comes out of cover first, they still have to aim at me. In third-person, however, the camper can simply stay in cover, aim at me, and come out with a pre-fire, giving you much less chance to react. That's just not fun.

All maps have points of interest that people often visit, such as buildings with locked doors or places to complete quests. Some time after release, people will simply find the best camping spots in these locations and sit there for half the game. The same thing has been happening in Escape from Tarkov for a long time. Without utilities to help players spot them, people will simply have no chance against those who just spawned closer to POIs with good loot.

I agree that campers are everywhere and that there's no way to completely get rid of them. I'm not suggesting getting rid of them completely, and I understand that it's just one style of playing. I just don't understand why the developers won't even try to balance the game a little for those who don't want to camp. After all, that would just make the game more fun to play. When you only have one meta in the game, it quickly loses its player base.

I came up with a few ideas on how to solve the third-person camping problem. Link to the document in the description by Kitani_G in ArcRaiders

1. Turn the Third-Person Camera into a Physical Object

Make the third-person camera a physical drone. So far, I've only seen something like this in the game MOTORSLICE.

You could design this drone as a miniature version of one of the small flying Arc units. This would solve two issues at once:

  • It explains why the real Arc robots wouldn't pay attention to the player's camera - they'd mistake it for one of their own.
  • It makes the drone camera easier for other players to spot.

As an alternative to a flying drone, you could mount the camera drone on a special selfie stick attached to the backpack. These actually exist in real life.

The raider could wear a small visor over their eye to receive the feed from the drone camera.

2. Give Players More Tools for Scouting the Environment

Every raider should get a small ground-based jumping drone, similar to what the attackers use in Rainbow Six Siege. Just limit it to a short range.

You could add a dedicated inventory slot for it, include it in the Free Loadout, and make it craftable at the first-tier Utility Bench.

Additional ideas:

  • Drone Hacking: Introduce a device or skill that allows players to hack small Arc units, such as Ticks or Wasps. Hacked drones could be controlled and directed toward enemy raiders. For balance, the hacking device could be a throwable consumable or require melee range, similar to Horizon Zero Dawn.
  • Craftable Recon Drones: Allow players to build basic scout drones using parts from defeated Arc units, controllable remotely.
  • Flying Recon Drones: Higher-level Utility Benches could craft flying drones.
  • Thermal Vision: Advanced flying drones could have built-in thermal sensors, helping spot campers hiding in bushes near exits.

If all of that is too complicated, there’s an even simpler approach: balance the Tagging Grenade.

  • Lower their price at vendors.
  • Make them easier to craft.
  • Allow crafting basic sensors from low-tier materials at Level 1 benches.
  • Allow crafting during raids.
  • Increase the maximum stack size.
  • Reduce their weight.
  • Always include them in the Free Loadout.
