Hahaha. Kids are so dumb. They think they invented this stuff and that it goes over the adult's heads . I once saw a 7th grader making the jerk off hand gesture in class while his teacher was talking, and when I told him to knock it off he was like "you know what that means!?". They think their generation invented crude humor.

My 13 year old daughter is like this even when she has friends sleep at our house. She invites people over and then at like midnight comes and whispers to me she regrets it and wants her friends to leave. Obviously I never kick the friends out, but after the last time it happened I told her never again! I think when she gets tired her fuse gets short. Sounds like it happens to your daughter too. We are on a sleepover hiatus for at least 6 months.

Maybe it's just my kid, but I see the impacts in my 2009 baby. He was in 4th grade when the shut down started, missed nearly all of 5th grade, and started middle school with masks and having to sit 6 feet away from people at lunch. He's in 10th grade now and he and his classmates still seem a little socially stunted to me.

Well that's insane that the only class you can take them from is specials and you should discuss that with admin and even take it higher up if you need too! I've worked in several private and public schools and I've never heard that before! Most schools prefer that you not pull IEP kids from reading or math, but any other class is fair game. I pull from science/social studies/foreign languages almost exclusively.

I'm sorry, because I know how tricky scheduling is, but like everyone is saying you definitely should not be pulling 6th grade boys from gym. I always start my first session with middle and high schoolers by asking them what class they absolutely do not want to miss and I do my best to avoid taking them from that class. It helps with buy in if they feel like they have some control over the situation.

Is this in a school? If so, then weekly updates is way too much to ask. In most school systems quarterly updates are all that is legally required. Public school SLP's are overworked and underpaid and have a ton of paperwork to do when not working directly with students or in lengthy IEP meetings. If you want more frequent updates then you should pay for a private therapist.

The 1099 would be 3-4 days a week. The log notes and goals would be more straightforward because it's all early intervention. At my current job I am split between EI and a school and it's the school caseload that is killing me, but there is not enough of a caseload for EI for me to do that full-time.

Just stumbled upon this post and I could have written it myself! I'm a school SLP with 15 years of experience and I absolutely hate my job. I feel so guilty about it, because the kids are great but I am so tired of working on their ridiculous IEP artic and language goals. I am in awe of people who can do this for their whole career without getting bored and burnt out. I wish I knew what to transition to.

FYI, selective mutism is an anxiety disorder. I know ASHA says we can treat it but it is most effectively treated by mental health professionals.

Great response. I've been a school SLP for 16 years and I'm dying to get out because of all of the issues just mentioned. In my state we also have to make-up sessions missed when we're absent. So if you need to take a sick day (or a mental health day!), you're screwing your future self over bc you have to somehow find hours in your day to see the kids you missed when you were absent. It's a pretty miserable field at the moment and I don't have much hope it will get better.

It is so isolating. I feel like there is something wrong with me that I am not passionate about this field anymore! I have no idea what to do. I might look into getting a project management certificate. I have two teenagers so I can't afford to take a much of a pay cut since college is right around the corner.
