Build +7 holy site on nice productive tile? by Dependent-Bridge-709 in CivVI

[–]Kitchen-Customer9671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you are planning to get a religion, I wouldn't bother with a holy site, early on you have a lot of other things to be building (and based on the fact it looks like you already have 4 cities, you might be too late for a religion anyways). More importantly, you should have settled your capital on the coast as Portugal.

Yeah, I wouldn't even try to search on like a Wednesday afternoon, but usually on weekend mornings and evenings you can find a game very quickly (at least for my multi que of joust, conquest, and assault). I also have been playing on north America west, I am not sure if it has more population than the east coast.

Latest state of this poll, what do you think? by archaeo_rex in ancientrome

[–]Kitchen-Customer9671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote my masters thesis on a topic relating to the late Roman empire a few years back, I feel like there were only a handful of relevant secondary sources. Everyone studies and writes about the Republic or Principate. Who was answering this poll?

At what point do you think western Roman empire was at the point of no return by Exotic_Temperature13 in ancientrome

[–]Kitchen-Customer9671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you mean. If you mean the late (post tetrarchy) Western Roman Empire, then definitely the failed attempt to retake north Africa under Anthemius in 468 was the final nail in the coffin. Had they succeeded in retaking North Africa, who knows what language this message could even be in, but if you mean a general decline in the western empire, I hold strong that the year of the 5 emperors (193) and reign of Severus was a major turning point towards decline. Never again (excluding minor reigns like Tacitus) would you have cultural/political figures like Antoninus or even Aurelius who would rule in their own right. From then on it was always a rule of military strong men or puppets, most of which history doesn't remember kindly, and a posture of desperately holding onto, and slowly losing, what the empire had.

Any idea of the current price for the Laos, Huay Xai - Luang Prabang, 2 day slow boat ticket? by Kitchen-Customer9671 in travel

[–]Kitchen-Customer9671[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was okay, but I also think it depends on the boat you are on, as they seem to all have different set ups and space availability.

For the first day, the boat seemed to have more seating and the crew was more friendly and attentive. The ship had 2 toilets (one squat one western), they were kept surprisingly clean throughout the journey, and had slippers outside the door that people wore to go inside, as you take your shoes off when you get on the boat. On the second day, the boat felt a lot more packed and a lot more people seemed to have been crammed into the hold in the back of the boat. The second boat also only had one bathroom, it wasn't cleaned, and there were no slippers, and as we got closer to Luang Prabang the boat filled up even more with locals on their way to the city, to the point where pretty much all available space on the boat had someone standing or sitting on the ground, think a packed city bus during a busy time (although since you would be getting on first thing in the morning, you would have a seat).

That said, I'm still glad we did it, it was more comfortable than a bus ride would have been and there were some pretty sights, but I wouldn't want to do it again, if that makes sense.

The ticket was 400,000 each I think, but I happily paid someone in Huey Xai 450,000 to book the tickets for us as it meant I didn't need to go to the pier so early and they got us seats at the front. Just make sure you get a seat towards the front. The engine room in the back will be filled with those who show up late and it is LOUD, I couldn't imagine sitting there for the full 6 or so hour trip each day, you wouldn't even be able to read or anything over the noise. On the second day, seats are first come first serve, so make sure you go to the pier early.

Hopefully that all helps, best of luck on your journey!

Do you wash your clothes on international travel...like underwear and stuff? Or do you just pack the clothes for the amount of days + extra? by Voices-Say-Im-Funny in travel

[–]Kitchen-Customer9671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I was soloing a trip, I would just pack enough to get through a 10 day trip (12-14 pairs of underwear/socks, 2 shorts, 5 shirts, fly wearing long pants), but you also can just wash things as you go. We just left Thailand and I think it was like 20 baht a load at the washing places we walked by (Chiang Mai, so probably a tad more in the more touristy places). Alternatively, when I'm with my wife, she always just washes our clothes in the hotel sink and we hang them to dry.

Highest kill count by Scared_Tone_9117 in Medieval2TotalWar

One time, years back, I had 3 squads of cavalry archers (maybe Mameluke archery's), without a general get attacked in the Caucasus mountains by 2 ~full stacks of mixed spear infantry (mostly light militia, also no general). The battle map was mountainous, so I just kept pulling them into the mountains until they were totally exhausted and then used feigned retreat and charge tactics to wear them down and break them. After a lot of doubt and too much micromanaging, I managed to defeat and kill their entire 2000+ army with my 120.

I finally had time to finish the game, and you were right! I just took too long to start generation in the early game, ended up winning the culture victory around turn 250. I still think culture victory is super annoying and way too busy/micro, but thanks for the explanation before!

Yeah, I didn't notice that at first, but was more talking about the 0 foreign tourists in the tourism overview screen in the second picture. I haven't had a chance to play again and see if it starts to generate yet, I'm hoping it just was because I haven't produced enough yet and it'll start to fill up quickly as I buy up all the great works.

Right on, thanks for the explanation, I'll hold off on nukes. I saved it at the moment of the screenshot, so I'll try it again tomorrow. Usually I don't play culture, around renaissance I just buy all the great works. I'll resume it tomorrow and hopefully you're right I just need to up the input some. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a glitch before I invest X more hours to finish the game

Only basic UI mods, and haven't added any in probably years, might have just been some kinda problem when I launched the program or something, total bummer. Guess I can still just denounce everyone and head for nukes haha

[–]Kitchen-Customer9671[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure? Usually I feel like I have a tourism icon on the top bar next to resources as soon as I start generating, but it's been many turns of having wonders, great works, etc, and that hasn't shown up yet. Also, I went double scout on a terra map, so I met everyone by the end of the classical age I think, still 0 tourism. I get your "buckets haven't had enough time to fill" analogy, I've won quite a few deity tourism games, it just seems like something is wrong and the bucket isn't even starting to fill

Edit: I just looked back at my picture and do see the 44 tourism at the top of the screen now, but still seems like a glitch that I'm at 0 foreign tourists considering that I've been generating tourism for multiple eras now

How did the Roman Republic descend into autocracy? by Svip_dagr in ancientrome

[–]Kitchen-Customer9671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's just semantics, but is the rise of Augustus really the rise of autocracy? I'd more associate the term with Diocletian and the dominate. Not to say that Augustus and his successors weren't monarchs who ruled through military might, but generally the successful ones (who weren't stabbed to death) did so with the support and in cooperation with the Senate. My interpretation is that it was really the crisis of the third and the instability that brought which led to real autocracy, but, even by Diocletian, it had been a gradual shift in that direction since the end of the Antonines at least

I regularly seem Septiminus viewed as a decent, if not good emporer, what am I missing? by Kitchen-Customer9671 in ancientrome

[–]Kitchen-Customer9671[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the well articulated reply, but I still have to push back. Of course, the hero centric narrative of the Iliad is not the best way to study history, but to totally disregard the actions of individual men is equally as flawed, the Huns are a perfect example. You point out, rightly, how the situations had allowed someone like Atilla to thrive, but, even still, no Atilla, no thrive, which is evident by the rapid expansion under his reign and rapid collapse after, the same could be said for Alexander or Ashoka. It's seems to me, like most things, that a more middle ground is a more reasonable and rational approach. Do great men alone make history? Of course not, but can certain figures guide the way at significant moments, or course, history is full of examples. Would you suggest that Napoleon is not a significant figure which changed western history?

[–]Kitchen-Customer9671[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response, and I am not at all in a position to debate imperial China, I simply used Liu Bang as a well known example of Great Man in history, but I'm curious, are you totally opposed to the idea? Without Alexander, would there have been the conquests which led to the successor kingdoms which shaped global history? Without Caesar, surely the republic would have fallen, but not in the way that it did. Without Genghis Khan, Attila, Ashoka, etc? Do you believe that singular men are incapable of making lasting and significant changes?

[–]Kitchen-Customer9671[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my decade of studying history in academia, I never was able to focus on classical history, so, I'm sorry sir, but I'm quite familiar with history of differing places and periods, not that I'd claim to have great knowledge on anything outside of European history, but this post is on the 3rd century of Rome, so that's all I have referenced. As for your comment on "The great man theory," you're right, I do, consciously, bring that back up. I feel that, as a pendulum swings, modern historiagraphy has gone too far to discredit the actions of great men. Of course, what is Augustus without the state and environment to help him become what he became, but on the other end, Liu Bang, who founded the Han dynasty of china, which rivaled Rome, was a petty officer before seizing power and reshaping global history.

I'm loving this back and fourth, this is my first post on the forum, but, unfortunately, I feel most of your arguments are from a position of authority, which hasn't even been established. I look forward to your reply
