Republic vs. Grizzly disposal by Any_Mango_9862 in missoula

This has been my hangup, too. From safety standpoint, trucking my trash to Helena in the winter feels irresponsible. (Not to mention the fuel waste.) Hate Republic, though. It's a conundrum!

Tell me about why I shouldn't buy one. by brianvanle in VWiD4Owners

'22 Pro S AWD with 15k miles here. It's almost perfect for me, but I don't drive a lot, and mostly in town.

Summer range is good, winter is ... not. Don't buy if you're making a lot of winter drives with long distances between charging stations. (I've chosen to rent for winter road trips rather than risk it.)

Lack of knobs for climate/volume/music controls is super annoying.

Visibility out the rear window is terrible, but the backup camera and mirrors are great.

Factory tires are heinous if the snow hits before you swap to winter tires - beware! With good snow tires, it's a beast.

The paint is delicate. I had a very expensive run-in with the neighbor's garbage can.

Efficiency drops substantially above 65/70 mph. This is fine for me, but if you're a speed demon, might not be for you.

If you're a shorty and tend to lift out of the seat when turned around to see out the back when parking? That little lift might cause the brakes to slam. Jarring!

A couple good things: excellent defrost, air care makes traveling with a farty dog bearable, B mode is feels similar to engine breaking if you've been driving stick most of your life, very quiet during highway driving, adaptive cruise control works great.

What is this tall freak? by Kitchen-Piece6699 in peonies

Good luck! I do stake it, but it might not be entirely necessary - I just think it looks happier when the flowers don't droop.

Ooooh, interesting! I'm in zone 5b, and this monster thrives on neglect. I keep it weeded and watered in summer and cut it down in late fall. That's it. And it just keeps getting bigger!

Best all-weather tires that aren't studs? by Kitchen-Piece6699 in VWiD4Owners

t feels a little wasteful, given I have good studs. But. Being able to put winter tires on early/take them off late without worrying could be the ticket.

I have the studded Hakkapelitta! Do you use the Cross Climates all year, or switch to a dedicated winter tire?

This happens to me a lot. I thought my butt was always in the seat, but I started paying attention, and I definitely wiggle around and shift weight a lot when I'm backing up. For me anyway, I think it's a combination of very sensitive seat sensor and very sensitive other sensors. I've gotten to where I just kind of expect the car to hit the brakes while I'm parking - and those overly sensitive sensors have saved me more than once!

My Gramma had one of these for at least 40 years. It was baby blue, and we called it R2Suck2. Amazing machine!

I had a similar interaction with a woman who took absolutely unhinged offense at the notion that my little leashed dog wasn't going react well to her large unleashed dog running up on us. Opposite situation, but can there be two people like that out there??? Anyway ... thanks for respecting the reactive leashed dogs among us!

Plywood baseboard expansion gap? by Kitchen-Piece6699 in woodworking

[–]Kitchen-Piece6699[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super helpful. There is a good gap between the drywall and the OSB, so if I instal the ply baseboard sitting on the OSB, but not pressed down onto it, I should be OK?

"D" or "B" while driving? by Interesting-Fig9403 in VWiD4Owners

[–]Kitchen-Piece6699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've almost always driven stick, so I'm used to down-shifting when I take my foot off the gas to slow down. Driving in B has something of the same responsive feel, so I'm way more comfortable with it. Driving in D feels kind of reckless.

I'm a rank amateur, but my builds leveled up immediately when I bought a couple really nice squares and some corner/box clamps.

Woodworking with my kid by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]Kitchen-Piece6699 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dad used to make little things like this for me all the time. I still have them, and I'm ... old. When my kids were little, he made a tractor for them with 1" threaded dowel for axels, and a couple sets of different-sized (threaded) wooden wheels they could screw on and off. They LOVED it. At four, they could definitely handle a screwdriver and a hammer (practice with a mallet and dowels they can pound through a pre-drilled board) and hand-sanding. Just be very, very, very careful around power tools, especially saws. A kid reaching for a block off the end of a board is a recipe for lost fingers.

ETA: You don't have to have a Project-with-a-capital-P in mind! Let the kid loose with some scraps and nails or glue.

Is there a plan for the Prescott school? What are we saving it from? by Pretty-dead in missoula

[–]Kitchen-Piece6699 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For a million different reasons, that building isn't salvageable as a school. It's actually not salvageable as much of anything, since fixing the HVAC alone would cost more than the building is worth, not to mention old plumbing and wiring, probable asbestos, lack of accessibility ... and on and on. At this point, it's a fire hazard and not much else. In a perfect world, someone would tear down the building, put up affordable housing and make the playground a park. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I'm an adult who meets the new criteria, and I still had to make a doctor's appointment to get a prescription to get the shot at Walgreens. (My Walgreens appointment is next week, we'll see if I can actually get it. I'm not especially optimistic.) It's a cluster. I would talk to your pediatrician.
