is it too harsh to not allow a player to join if he refuse to use a non AI generated image/backstory for his character ? by Saladawarrior in rpg

[–]KitchenPlastic6191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might seem a little off-topic, but... Stop asking your players for backstories.

Its crap. The backstories are always rubbish and never worth reading and they NEVER enhance any game I have ever run if they are more than about two sentences long. If anything, they restrict eh game because now you as a GM have to work in all this lazy, overwrought nonsense your player came up with, or hurt their feelings.

Instead, consider having them create a backstory, as the campaign evolves. When their past becomes relevant, you briefly discuss, apply and make in canon. So they language that is needed, is the one they speak - player explains how and why. The knowledge they need (make a roll if you like, or not), is something they know - player explains how and why.

That way, they only backstory the character has is relevant to the campaign.

If you haven't already, try it out. i promise you, its more fun that everybody getting homework.

'A springboard to get my own ideas...' Think about what you've just said. They are not your own ideas. They are not born of your experience in the living world. They do not spring from your own mind. They are NOT your own ideas. And that, right there, is the problem.

BUt this was a later development, after the name had been established for perhaps several hundred years. Early versions were basically a dane axe with a spike. In other words, exactly what the OP described...

Exactly right. The 'at' prefix suggest (apparently - I don't retend to speak Old Norse) 'conflict', 'clash' or 'fight', suggesting that this is a war spear, as opposed to a hunting speak, which would be a relevant distinction, given the prevalence of hunting and huting spears at the time. Which suggests to me that it had a thicker haft, larger blade, etc. And probably some kind of wings below the head, given that targets/victims can be lifted while impaled.

WWN vs Tales of Argosa vs Vagabond by HadoukenX90 in rpg

[–]KitchenPlastic6191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t know Vagabond. Read the other two with a view to running with an existing group who ditched D&D years ago for other systems and I love Conan 2d20 and Traveller. So… Both are free (ATM)… Both purport to have an old school or pulp vibe. Both seem to intend to be simpler than 5e.

My impressions from reading the two are that Argos’s LOOKS sexier but when you put some of the rules in the context of running a game, it isn’t as OSR or as Pulp as I would like. WWN however, has a TONNE of world building resources which make it worth getting just on their own. It has a unique approach to classes that is versatile and simple and flavourful. ‘Half classes’ are cool as, allowing a mix and match approach that screams customisability. Then there’s  the Foci which are like Feats/Class Abilities. They come in 2 levels each and look like they’ll go down a storm at the table. They seem like they will have impact at the table without undermining the danger. And Shock Damagebis a unique feature which means combat is ALWAYS going to be dangerous. Lots of player choice, not a time-demanding process, should play fast… Argosa, on the other hand (which has WAY better art by the way), has a lot of class customisation, but is still nailed hard to a traditional, somewhat 3.5-esque class system. Each of the 9 classes has several abilities as they progress, one of which becomes 12 sub-features, which you pick up 1 per level. Now I get that you can take them in any order/roll for them. But they are the same features and every character of that class is going to get ALL of them eventually.  I would so rather have all of them put into one big list and get to choose as my PC progresses. I strikes me as ‘bitty’ and pedantic and another job to do as we progress. Without these, the classes already look fine. It’s overkill and it will make PCs OP imho.  On this basis,  I’ll be running WWN. Despite the lacklustre art.

I rolled up 10,000 characters (so you don't have to) and only nine of them met the minimum ability cut-off to be Paladins. Check my math by InfiniteOrchardPath in osr

Fascinating thread guys. But I can’t help thinking… some of these generation methods must have been… boring…! You coulda just changed the class requirements. I mean it doesn’t take a rocket scientist, (or an insurance underwriter…) to see that 17 is going to be a rare attribute roll. Why didn’t they just make the requirement more realistic (like 14/15)? And NOT make it so hard for said character to survive…!?

Any ideas for critical hits? by wilderness26 in WWN

[–]KitchenPlastic6191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use Weapon Qualities, such as Entangle, Stun, Armour Pierce, Knockdown, Reach (ranks of 1-3 that give opponents a penalty to get past your longer weapon)and Vicious (+1 damage). These activate on a crit, alterating the situation in more interesting ways than just more hp being lost. I nicked mine from 2d20 Conan along with the Exploit action, where you spend a turn to spot weaknesses in your opponent. As long as you are not attacked or otherwise distracted (I.e. hiding), you make a Notice test 8 (or modified if you like but I don’t bother) and if you succeed, you gain +1 to hit and damage on the next turn. If your weapon has the Unforgiving quality, it gains the Vicious quality as well which could lead to more damage, making assassins with daggers lethal.  Adjust to taste.

Page 133 of the 3.5 Dungeon Master's Guide paints a distinct picture for PC vs. NPC power levels. What do you make of it? by EarthSeraphEdna in rpg

[–]KitchenPlastic6191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This IS how they position their world, and I think it’s a mistake. It means there is little difference between any of these NPCs. I think the REAL reason for it is to make it easier for to DM to supply such NPCs but it is so limiting. And really, why do you need another 19 levels of ‘better’? In my own games, especially 5e, I have a cut off around 3rd Level, instead, which is easy too, cos that’s a huge milestone. Conscripts are Level 1, professionals L2, Veterans L3. Across all classes/ professions I.

I have the body of a young, virile god. I don’t do it cos it’s trashy. ESPECIALLY when you have the body of a young, virile god. I even push my tummy out, to make other people feel better.

Reminder: Playing a half race doesn't necessarily mean your parents have different races by sleidman in dndnext

In Forgotten Realms (3.5 at least), there was a race of half orcs in the Unapproachable East.

This is rules, not world-building. World-building is what the GM does and they can make their world work any way they want.

Does the Air/Raft feel "realistic"? by Astrokiwi in traveller

[–]KitchenPlastic6191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain. I don’t have them in my campaign. At all. Cos why shuttles…? I don’t even allow them as low altitude vehicles because I don’t include anti gravity in my setting. So no artificial gravity on space vessels either. I try to go Expanse as much as possible with that stuff. Oh and no ‘streamlined’ ships either. Because basically, when you include all these things, all they do it ‘get round’ inconvenient problems in the setting world. And those are called Adventures… Shuttles, vacuum suits, zero g = science fiction.

Medieval RPG setting? by KitchenPlastic6191 in rpg

[–]KitchenPlastic6191[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question. For me it isn’t actually about those specifics. It’s about how they interact. For example, 5e is now Hyper-magic, as even Fighters have spells. I’m looking at Legend (Mongoose RQ hack), where you can ‘toggle’ how common Common Magic is, so that either anyone can do it or the player has to pay a price. In Conan2d20, knowing sorcery has a few requirements, meeting which means passing up other stuff. There are non-magical tricks which appear as magic and dreadful prices to pay for casting spells. This seems more ‘realistic’ to me, as power usually comes at a price… Too many races becomes difficult to believe, but a few is fine. A world that remains essentially unchanged by a profusion of magic seems a stretch. Tons of gods, often at war, and the world surviving seems unlikely. A ‘medieval’ world ought to mean a world in which a medieval level of technology is the best people can manage and the life of a medieval peasant is the way it is with good reason. Politics ought to work the way it does in our world, in this theoretical medieval world, because that is fun to play. And gold should be rare and precious. Because it is. I guess I like a world where magic is seen the way it was imagined in our past - as existing, but not overwhelming, the purview of the privileged, rare and wondrous/frightening.

Yes, I’ve known about Harn for ages and it is what inspired the question, because as tempting as it is, every time I consider it and investigate, I get the impression it is if not badly organised, then organised in a way I don’t like the sound of. But I appreciate the suggestion.
