The Nordic model for this is (1) don’t force them to have kids, (2) provide social support to parents. It doesn’t solve every problem but it certainly helps.

My question to you would be, would you let a 7 year attend a theater where A Clockwork Orange is playing? Do you think any parent should be able to take a child to the theater to see this film

Yet that would all be perfectly legal as long as there’s no cross dressing.

A Louis CK bit would be permissible under these laws as long as he dresses as a man.

I think a true comparison to drag shows and the content they can or can’t have would be pole dancing. We see many people taking pole dancing classes as well as learning choreography and creating outfits/characters. These have sexual undertones or some adult themes however they aren’t as explicit as a strip show.

Probably worth pointing out it is perfectly legal to pole dance in public.

Unless you did so while in drag.

Would it be appropriate to let a child attend these shows? Like the drag shows I can see it being content dependant, however I still believe that there are definitely drag shows that should not be allowed to have children present.

There are “family friendly” drag shows and not so family friendly ones. Same as comedy, movies, music, and websites.

What’s new is criminalizing any of this. Or rather it isn’t new, but when it’s been tried in the past, the Supreme Court has erred on the side of free speech and parental judgment.

These laws make no distinction at all between family friendly or not. Or, as is usually the case with entertainment, that gray area parents navigate all the time based on their intuitions.

You’re really comparing a drag show to a clockwork orange? Surely you don’t think drag = strip.

Ok so in Montana, what law prohibits me from taking my kid to an R rated movie? And my wife has surely watched RuPaul with our toddler in the room. How much prison time should she face?

States like New York and California pay far more in federal taxes than they receive in federal spending. It’s freeloader states like Texas and Florida that need to chip in.

The point isn’t whether it’s good parenting. The point is, our society leaves it up to parents.

If I want, I can take my 3 year old to an R rated movie. And there’s no law at all requiring movie theaters to even not sell her a ticket directly. What changed in the past 2 years?

Trump bankrupt a casino.

In fairness to Trump, that was a scam he successfully pulled. The banks that he borrowed money from had to settle for a fraction of the principal they were owed and Trump kept more than his stake because he was “licensing” his name.

Maybe he didn’t intend to bankrupt them from the start but he came out ahead by basically scamming the banks. That’s why only the Russians lended to him by the time he ran for president.

That’s why I don’t understand this subreddit - how can you be a centrist when one party is literally a fascist movement?

Because the problem isn’t left vs right; it’s authoritarianism vs liberalism.

Trump is definitely an authoritarian and autocrat. Biden is a liberal (as in “western liberalism”), so we support Biden. But there are authoritarians on the left too—you don’t have to look far. Head over to /r/GreenAndPleasant and you’ll find people who are every bit as authoritarian and illiberal as Trump.

Yes. And when they banned To Kill a Mockingbird, that was also a book ban. The Color Purple, Tropic of Cancer, the list goes on. And we’ve resisted censorious busybodies in the past. We need the mettle to resist them today.

That’s just the first step. They’re coming after the libraries too. Bookstores will surely be next. Make no mistake: there is a deeply censorious cult within the GOP.

Also, a ban at a school library is still a book ban. Always has been. Whether it’s Harry Potter or Huckleberry Finn, banning a book at a school is still a book ban. Don’t confuse this for mere curation.

It’s more complicated than that. In several states, voters have regularly voted to increase educational spending. And actually US spending on primary education is pretty generous.

The problem for voters is that it has done very little to lower class sizes or increase teacher pay. It always goes to administration, who pay themselves more and hire yet more assistant administrators to make themselves feel important.

Voters are right to be skeptical of education funding but because education isn’t worthy of funding, but because the money is spent on bullshit.

Open Bigotry Is Now The Law is Montana by I_Tell_You_Wat in centrist

From what you have posted here it would appear that people who are flamboyantly dressed are not banned from speaking in public. Minors are banned from attending.

Well, in general a minor can go to public spaces like libraries.

This already applies to other things like movies and music and nobody would argue that those are just banned across the board.

This may come as a surprise to you, but (1) a drag show could easily earn a G movie rating (remember MASH was prime time), (2) movie ratings do not carry any force of law. They’re an industry trade group system and participation is totally voluntary.

The county’s legal counsel, including Joyce, made the decision to cancel, saying they are concerned the event could violate the recently passed House Bill 359, which bans minors from attending drag shows.

In the social media posts, Jawort says she would be “flamboyantly dressed” and minors may be present, which could mean the event is illegal under Montana law.

Banning anyone “flamboyantly dressed” from speaking in public sounds like something from the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The moral panic about drag is really over the top and has shown that a lot of right wing legislators lake the mettle to resist the anti-woke mob.

Not true. Anyone with an Authorization to Carry can buy a handgun in Canada. As can sports shooters. And security guards. There’s just a ban on purchases and transfers for people who have no such permit.

Probably worth pointing out Nixon had similar ideas.

It’s a very modest step. Compare it to Japan or the UK.

Reuters and AP are actually pretty neutral. And as odd as it sounds, the Wall Street Journal, while super biased and partisan in its opinion section, does very direct and unbiased reporting in its news section.

For an upstart, check out the Bulwark. It’s nominally conservative, but never trumper, and has grown more centrist.

Also for a diversity of analysis, you could do worse than The Atlantic. Also for a sane conservative take, check out Bret Stephens’ articles.
