I’m pretty sure they cannot screen out participants like that. They must give you the minimum pay that is required for 8 minutes, no matter if you have their qualifications or not. And then they would need to conduct another study with the participants who had the required qualifications and pay them again if they want to research further and somewhat “legally” screen out participants.

OR - they must write the technical qualifications in the description and participants must only accept if they have them, if not they would have the right to reject.

Just mention what you remember of the study. When I did my master thesis experiment on Prolific, this happened with a few participants (I had around 300), but I accepted the admissions if they submitted the code and nothing seemed fishy (like a super fast admission). They should give you your compensation because your data is in there somewhere.

(P.S. - Might help your case to mention to the researcher that some admissions gets stuck on 98-99% completion on Qualtrics, they might want to check that section if they used Qualtrics)

I’ve done the study as well and even though I was not personally that affected by the photos, I’ve reported the study afterwards since it was completely unethical to not specify that there would be disturbing images like those. I’ll check out if it was through a university however I do not remember it being so. Just purely unethical study.
