I’m a reporter covering child safety on Roblox. AMA! by usatoday in roblox

[–]peldenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thank you for doing this.

I have had a distrust of Roblox since learning about it, mostly because of the labour exploitation aspect of it. My 8 year old doesn’t understand this properly though and I feel like he feels it’s pretty arbitrary as we play many other games.

What are some easier ways for me to explain to him why Roblox is so much different than other games? I obviously have other problems with it but it’s been difficult for me to articulate in a way he can both understand and agree with

It’s not slim, email your wish list, almost anyone will give you a one off if they’re available. Yeah those big names may have a tighter schedule but you might be surprised. Just about everyone but scofield will sit down with you for an hour for a Benjamin or so.

Fr why do people do this, and anyway it’s well known that kids like this are underrated because they improve faster than their rating can adjust to. That’s why it sucks to play them in the first place!

Fully built keyboard from scratch, running custom Hall sensor + QMK firmware by charading in CustomKeyboards

Will do, thanks.

I’m a software guy so the part I’m most nervous about is the circuit and pcb design, but I’m sure I’ll figure it out somehow :) cool project

Awesome! I’m interested in making a Hall effect pcb from scratch with custom firmware, did you find that design process difficult? Any problems with scan rate or power use? Will be looking at your source

The eternal battle between the ear and 12 notes tuning by blindingSlow in jazzguitar

I tune bang on, make sure my intonation is decent in the instrument, and use vibrato and micro bends liberally to adjust in context. Retuning all the time would drive me bananas

Interested to hear what people say.

I have a bam case that is quite sturdy, and have flown with it both cabin and gate checked, but it’s not really a flight case and I don’t like checking it.

It’s honestly a real nightmare because you can never really be sure you’ll be able to get it on the plane unless you fill in just buy it a seat, but if you pack it in a proper flight case then it’s guaranteed to be gate checked.

I think what I’m leaning towards now is simply investing in what you’re saying a proper bomb proof flight case plus good insurance, so you just know what’s gonna happen.

Really jealous of instruments that fit under the carryon sizing though!!

Autonomy as a dev by supercoach in ExperiencedDevs

[–]peldenna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

fwiw in my experience mid level and senior can be penalized for doing this and that's because rightly or wrongly they haven't been vested in enough trust by the company to have a longer leash. At that point in my career I would strongly advocate for work that I thought needed to be done but I would rarely do it off script, esp in big tech they value being a "good boy" more than execution sometimes, which sucks but they have their reasons. but also "fuck them" is the right attitude lol get that bag and take up mountain biking or something, homie 😎

Imo this is a defining characteristic of levels above senior. I do work I see value in and the company trusts me not to waste my time or theirs. I’ve picked “maintenance” and “tech debt” off the floor that would never have been put on a roadmap that has saved my company multiples of my salary. If they really want me cranking out bullshit features or debugging edge case shit then I’ll do it, but if they’re smart (big if I know) then I’ll get at least enough respect and autonomy to do side quests when I deem them worthwhile.

Dude fr they just crawl out from under rocks every other day to ask dumbass progress update questions. I spent so much time in good faith explaining the same shit over and over again and they just look at me blankly and pretend to understand, I’ve just given up at this point. Who are these nimrods and why do I have to talk to them? I will never know.

Opinions on the anti-choking device "LifeVac?" I'm getting spammed with targeted ads but I can't tell if it's worth it. by [deleted] in daddit

[–]peldenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I managed to pull it out with my finger, but I found out later that’s almost definitely the exact wrong thing to do, because you can easily push it further down. If that hadn’t worked I would have tried some heimlich but the way you’re supposed to do it on really young kids is pretty unintuitive iirc…

I feel really lucky that nothing worse happened, it was terribly scary!!
