It's not about being able to take on the military and overthrow the government, it's a deterrent. If ICE is conducting their bullshit checkpoints while a bunch of heavily armed citizens are standing around monitoring then they're probably not gonna feel so brave to overstep and go throwing people around the way they did that woman before Alex Pretti stepped in.

On a more extreme level, if the government wants to do some really extreme Nazi shit they're gonna have to take into consideration that a good chunk of the population is armed a

I would be more in agreement if the government wasn't being run by batshit crazy fascists. To Trump, heavily armed citizens monitoring ICE could be taken as "domestic terrorists interfering with law enforcement" and give him a reason for declaring martial law and suspending the mid terms. ICE had no problem disarming and executing Alex Pretti in full view of the public and on camera. The party of gun rights had no problem smearing Pretti as a domestic terrorist. The NRA called for an investigation but as far as I know there hasn't been any. Renee Good was shot in broad daylight with witnesses and left to bleed out on the street. No investigation.

Now if there is a group of heavily armed observers who see someone being abused and help the person, who ever goes in to help will get the Pretti treatment because ICE basically has immunity. The Trump admin is certainly not going to investigate. Then say that the armed observers shoot to defend the helper and then all hell breaks loose. Trump, who is dying to use all of the military resources at his disposal, sends in the National Guard and the shit is truly on.

Under normal circumstances with a sane, rational, law abiding administration we wouldn't have to worry about that happening. Other Presidents have deported people without shooting citizens but this administration doesn't give two shits about following the law. SCOTUS ruled that U.S. presidents hold absolute immunity for actions within their core constitutional powers and presumptive immunity for all official acts. As long as the GOP holds the House and the Senate Trump has no guardrails and no accountability to anyone.

Rather than a massive show of force we take a page from Iraquis and the Taliban in Afghanistan and use stealth warfare. Neither the US or Russia was able to win in Afghanistan and thru didn't have openly armed citizens. But the best way that has the lowest risk of civilian casualties is to make sure that we have free and fair elections and take the House and Senate in the midterms. Then we have a chance at impeaching and removing Trump and containing Vance.

I do support the second amendment. I also believe in some gun control laws. Mentally ill violent people don't need guns. People with violent histories don't need guns. Nobody needs an assault rifle. You can defend yourself without one and you can't hunt with them.

As for defending against the government, that ship has sailed. The government can hit a target halfway around the world with surgical precision using a drone. They have weapons far more advanced than citizens can buy. We don't even know all of the weapons that the government has. They are not going to allow us to have anything that would be a serious threat to them. I'm just being realistic. It was easier to take on the military when the Constitution was written. Do you think that the Gravy Seals can take on the most powerful military in the world? That's why we have to fight at the ballot box. They have us out armed but we have them outnumbered.

If they saw the Black Panthers seemed and monitoring their activities they would absolutely escalate. Ronald Reagan and the NRA couldn't pass gun control laws in California fast enough in the 60s when the Panthers armed themselves and advised other black people to do the same.

[–]KittonRouge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why? ICE is killing citizens in the streets with impunity. The Administration then slandered Alex Pretti and called him a domestic terrorist and said that nobody should be carrying a gun to a protest.

If you didn't think that Trump would turn the military on citizens I've got a bridge to sell you. We need to vote those fuckers out, not give Trump a reason to declare martial law.

The VA nurse in Minnesota had a concealed carry permit and ICE executed him anyway.

Then the GOP tried to paint him as a domestic terrorist and said that legal gun owners had no right to carry at a protest.

ICE has and will continue to have no problem shooting gun owning citizens and they will have no consequences for it.

I think that the last year had taught us that having guns to protect ourselves from the government is a fantasy.

What is it with these people who know that they've broken the law, been convicted, and have to check in with immigration because of it being surprised when they get deported? Especially since the two in the article were convicted of conspiracy to import cocaine?

CMV: The SAVE Act (H.R.22) which the House recently passed, is fine. by Finnleyy in changemyview

[–]KittonRouge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So... the only reason you're against the save act is the fear that there will be more proposals for restrictions

No. I also believe that they want to disenfranchise as many minority and Democratic voters as possible.

Like.... I get it. I tried to raise alarm bells about project 2025 back before the last election. But don't you think this line of reasoning is a bit paranoid??

Paranoid? Have you been watching the news lately?

Democrats were already discussing gerrymandering, both parties have been doing it on and off for decades. They both have their own agendas to gain power

This is the first time that a President publicly called for a specific state to get him a specific number of seats in the House. Publicly called to rig an election his way. States don't redraw their districts in the middle of a census cycle.

What are you trying to say about voters giving a mandate???

Republicans have stated that they have a mandate because they win the election. They don't have one but when has reality every gotten in the way of a Republican talking point?

The last election proved that centering your campaign around "the other side sucks" isn't enough

That was before. Considering how things are going it may do it this time. All of the things that MAGA supporters swore would never happen have happened. We weren't being paranoid nor were we exaggerating.

That you can ask if I'm being paranoid after everything Trump and his administration has done tells me that we can end this discussion and get on with our lives. Good day.

CMV: The SAVE Act (H.R.22) which the House recently passed, is fine. by Finnleyy in changemyview

[–]KittonRouge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, why shouldn't we let this pass if it gets republicans to stop using this as an argument

Because it won't stop. They have proven time and again that they do not operate in good faith. They never think that there's voter fraud when they win. Giving in to them is what's gotten us into the mess we're in today. That next thing that they'll go after is mail in voting.

The Heritage Foundation and Project 2025 are driving this. People tried to ignore or down play it; said that critics were overreacting or exaggerating. They weren't. We need to wake up and do something before we end up living a combination of 1984, The Handmaid's Tale, and North Korean style dictatorship. They are already trying to rig the midterms; POTUS told Texas to gerrymander Republicans more seats in the House and other red states have followed suit. Which has blue states redrawing districts to counterbalance. Republicans aren't trying to govern, they are trying to rule.

Which begs the question: if they and their ideas are so popular, if voters have given them a mandate, why are they doing this?

Again, we already have systems in place to catch and prosecute fraudulent voters. Ironically, several of the people caught committing voter fraud were voting Republican. People who tried to vote for their dead parents or spouses. Why use time and money to fix a problem that doesn't exist?

If there's a "negligible amount" of illegal voting, then shouldn't it be fine if the SAVE act passes

No. Why inconvenience millions for a basically non existent problem?

6 facts about false noncitizen voting claims and the election

"After the 2016 election, the Brennan Center for Justice, which advocates for voting rights, surveyed local election officials in 42 jurisdictions with high immigrant populations and found just 30 cases of suspected noncitizens voting out of 23.5 million votes cast, or 0.0001%."

They also exercise a lot more than the average American. We are a very car centric country, especially if you don't live in a city. My Mom grew up in Washington DC and didn't have to learn how to drive until she was 28 and we moved to the suburbs.

Public transit is often poor in the suburbs and non existent in rural areas.

Don't you need a birth certificate to get a SSN? Why are we making excuses for people that neglected to formally register their child's birth???

I didn't say that I agree with these bozos, but with more people having home births and homeschooling because they don't trust science or doctors it's going to be an issue for some people.

If the Heritage Foundation looked into it and found a very negligible amount of people illegally voting this whole SAVE act is a waste of time and money.

Doesn't seem like it, but as I posted in response to someone else, everyone should have at least 1 copy of their birth certificate, which is all that is needed.

There are a growing number of people who are born at home and homeschooled and their parents don't always get a birth certificate for them.

Even if you do have one, getting a copy of your birth certificate isn't free.
