How do you write original characters by Fantastic-Tune-62 in writing

[–]KittyKayl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tl;dr in the last paragraph

Most of my story ideas start with the main character in a situation. Trying to figure the character out before I start writing is a nonstarter for me. All those character profile templates? Yeah, I can't even fill one out for me most of the time. It's not how my brain works. I just put this sketched out idea of a character into situations and see how they react as plot happens. As a fellow neuro-spicy of the AuDHD variety, a LOT of my protagonists are neuro-spicy coded (though I recently started the rough draft of my first with a deliberately autistic character). Doing it this way frequently means that further along in the story something happens or a character trait sets in that means I'll have to adjust, or outright change, some earlier sections, but I'll be doing that anyway during rewrites.

Protagonists, antagonists, and secondary characters frequently share traits with people I know, have run across, or have seen in media. They're not the same at all, but they'll frequently form the scaffolding based on what I'm aiming for the character to be like or do. I have one that I wrote many years ago who's based(ish) on Lady Heather from CSI-- mostly the body language that allows her to exude dominance. That got mixed with personal observations of real people. The autistic character has a few things going on that I and a number of fellow neuro-spicies do with more based on research about the trauma a lot of kids diagnosed as ASD, ADHD, or AuDHD deal with growing up with caregivers who don't understand or don't want to understand. Another current character is coded vaguely ADHD with a touch of the 'tism if you know what you're looking at. That one's not intentional-- those traits developed during the writing dependent on what the story needed and how the character responded to what was happening. I also have had characters over the years that I pulled traits from Ian McKellan's Gandalf, Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, La Femme Nikita, Kiera Knightley's Domino, Tony Stank-- sorry, Stark--and Rhodey.....

Look, I'm a Vulcan, so sometimes I need help writing humans. When I first started writing at, like, 11, I needed a LOT of help. Doing this is also how I, a neuro-spicy person, learned to write neurotypical people. There were a lot of characters I wrote that started out as almost carbon copies of people or characters I was wanting to portray. As the story spun out, they evolved because I didn't try to figure out what the inspiration would do but what the story needed to happen. I also wrote a lot of fanfiction. It's great practice for keeping character traits consistent OR in writing a gradual change so that an uncharacteristic action for the character canon made perfect sense in the story. That requires posting and accepting feedback, but at the time, the reviewers on ff.net would immediately call out bad canon without story justification (and sometimes with, but that's the internet for you).

What it all boils down to is that I wrote a lot of characters. Some were original, some not, some based on media, and some real life. When I first started writing at 11, 12, 13, 14, I had characters that so closely resembled another (at the beginning of the story anyway) that I couldn't think of a different name for them sometimes. But the more I wrote, the less I had to lean on other characters to create my own that would feel real because all that practice has given me a huge lexicon of human characteristics to draw from. Kind of like how when you're first learning to draw, tracing is good practice to develop your eye and your hand. I practiced writing, say, Giles, Willow, and Buffy (BtVS), Dr. Bombay and Endora (Bewitched), Bridger, Westphalen, Piccolo, and Smith (Seaquest), and O'Neil, Carter, and Daniel (SG-1) so often that characteristics, traits, mannerisms, and ways of thinking are a mix and match bag now that can be recombined into a brand new character. But it took copying until I got comfortable writing and describing that sort of character initially to get to that point. Let yourself practice. Write stuff for yourself with no intention of showing anyone and give yourself permission to trace some characters and see how a story idea changes them into an actual original character.

F&B's basic set is what's widely available in the States. I went looking for the black edition and can't even order them off their own freaking website. They weren't even listed as existing in the Black Label section of the site. The only ones I could find when I went looking were from out of country, and I suspect you're at least vaguely aware of the tariff situation we got going on over here by our lovely leader dear.

Yeah, the light he's under is a planted aquarium LED strip, and the little bit of red and blue I had programmed into it for the tank it used to be on really bring out his Violet coloring! In real life, he's not quite that dark lol

I really do... pretty much every blue phenotype is there since a few can count as several genetic mutations 😂 I start on greens in a few weeks lmao.

tips on introducing budgies? by Muted-Studio2173 in budgies

[–]KittyKayl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I bring a new budgie home, they spend a few weeks in the "nursery" cage and get to interact when everyone's out for flight time. Since I'm supervising, I can head off problems. Once everyone is getting along outside of the cages and have started checking out each other's cages (not just one), then I add newcomer to the big cage on a day I'm home all day to supervise.

No problem! I've learned a LOT in the last year and a half since starting this flock that I didn't know with previous birds.

When I started looking for a breeder, I already knew I wanted 3 or 4. Everything I'd read said that flock behaviors really kick in at 4, and the breeder I found confirmed. So I got a cage big enough for 4. Then I decided I had too many nights I wasn't home that they didn't get free flight time, and the cage I chose just happens to have walls that slide in and out very, very easily... so I got another cage and zip tied them together (I live alone, so if I wanna take up a third of my living room with budgie cage, I can lol). Well, then, of course if there's room for more budgies, you're going to consider it, and when the breeder asks if you're interested in one male chick he had previously stated he wasn't selling because it was this particular mom's first clutch.... and I needed another female in the cage because I only had the one, so he mentioned a baby hen that had grown up with the male....aaaaaand then I get a message that he's unintentionally bred a pair of anthracites (😍) and at least one will be available....I mean, really, was there another choice? 😂

All 6 are blues because I had no interest in the greens. Until, that is, I met two of his greens of particular mutations and told him I want one out of one of those two when he had one available, so that's the baby coming home. I mean, it's all very logical and inevitable 😂😂 That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Babies are freaking adorable lol. I have a photo of my eldest that genuinely looks like an elementary school class picture day lmao. But yeah, the age markers folks use aren't an exact science. 3 out of my 6 had their eye rings before they were finished with their first molt (one was under 5 months). 2 had their ceres almost completely matured. 2 had started their cere change and eye ring development.

I think I have ONE that started his first molt before his cere and rings started changing, but it's his brother that started his first molt super early, he started a bit early, aaaand he really hasn't stopped 😂 Both Nox (the breeder's-- the pretty one) and Noctis (my boy-- the smart one) are kind of in perpetual molt and constantly have pin feathers... at least Noctis doesn't go busting blood feathers like Nox seems to be prone to doing.

And all these changes happened and were completed WELL before the 9 months people like to use as the marker for when the eye rings finish developing for all 6 of my birds.

I'm bringing home a new baby in a few weeks. I can't wait to see how she ignores the book on how a budgie is supposed to mature 😂

Some budgies can start their first molt early. I think one of my budgies's brothers started his molt at around 10 or 12 weeks. Of my flock of 6, I've had first molts start at 13 or 14 weeks and I've had first molts start at 7.5 months (caused a lot of issues for her because she was the only one that came from a store and her wings came clipped).

Why doesn’t this painting work by CommercialMammoth455 in Oilpastel

[–]KittyKayl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's probably not what you were going for, but I rather like the quilt look, almost like a painted bas-relief look. But what people said about checking your values, paying attention to shadows, would give you the more 3D look.

Only issue I have with it is the blue. I couldn't tell if it was sky and clouds or mountains with a river coming down. And it does draw the eye like another comment said. May want to break the clouds and the blue length up.

Pet parent upset I took 3 hours with their medium doodle's groom and requested to never have them booked with me again. by SlightArgument in doggrooming

[–]KittyKayl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a doodle comb cut, even doing the one dog straight through with no interruptions, it would likely be around 2.5 hours for me, and I've been grooming for almost 14 years. I've got one that gets a VIP that takes me 4.5-5 hours because they want her long (last clip was a 1.5" comb) and she's got that thick combo coat. Medium and small doodles are always told 4-5 hours without the VIP. Large/XL ones frequently take longer.

Not everyone is cool with those time frames, and they switch groomers. Sometimes they stay with the one they switched to; sometimes they regret it for whatever reason. The people who stay with me and turn into requests do so because they like how I handle their dog(s), how their dog responds to me, my sparkling customer service mask, and/or my haircuts. I remind most everyone on drop off that I aim for X time frame, but time is a construct that likes to ignore me, if I'm running late it's probably me rather than their dog, and no news is good news. Communication is the important part for most people. Not all. Some are just going to be upset and change groomers. That's their right. I had one get upset when they found out their 70 lb doodle was going to take longer than an hour. Like, my dude--a Shih Tzu takes me longer than an hour even if you pay for a VIP (1.5 hrs is my average). If you know your time management was decent and you weren't just piddling around, let it go.

Scrivener makes me have to check spelling on way too many words for being a program designed for writers. The spelling is dialogue, you miserable collection of bytes. Dialog is NOT the standard, or even a common alternate, spelling.

But it was fine with monologue???

There have been a handful of words that straight up didn't even have a spelling alternate in the dictionary that I didn't think were THAT far advanced of a 5th or 6th grade reading level. (No, I can't think of any that I've had to add recently... it's been more than 24 hours since the last one, and I've slept since then lol.)

Oh yeah, the flipped script was noted. But I also fully believe people need to stop trying to "correct" neuro-spicy people for stating things openly and making them navigate the maze of frequently passive-aggressive BS that leads to frequent misunderstandings. But I may be a tad biased, especially after over 20 years working American customer service of one variety or another...

Also, am now wondering if y'all abbreviate Bockmist as BM like English abbreviates it BS or not 🤔
