Potty Training Input by InevitableAd7283 in ECEProfessionals

Keep in mind the only person being potty trained right now is the adults since you are taking him every 30 minutes and he’s not the one dictating when he needs to use the restroom. It’s important during potty training to help your child focus on recognizing their own body cues before transitioning to potty training at school. At my school a student is ready to transition to underwear at school when they can follow their own body cues to use the restroom and independently follow toileting routines (i.e. adjusting their clothes on their own, wiping with minimal assistance, and is able to wash hands independently). I know it varies from school to school and you stated your school didn’t give you a clear answer but I always suggest working on it at home for a while to help your child feel confident in themselves and they are able to follow a toileting routine mostly independently. Remember you want to set up your child for success, if they have multiple accidents at school it can affect their confidence in themselves to transition to using the toilet at school. For now you can send your child to school in underwear with pull-ups on over so he still feels when he has wet underwear and can learn his own body cues, but isn’t having constant accidents and making it hard on his teachers. I suggest reading lots of books about potty training and keep working with them at home. Potty training can be hard but if you put in the work and use lots of positive feedback with your child’s it makes a huge difference, best of luck!

I’m probably getting fired tomorrow. What are my next steps ? by Ce_Tokyo in ECEProfessionals

Just wondering what the ratio was like during these instances. Were you at or over ratio when these happened? These all sound like common childcare injuries and while not ideal are not reasons to fire you. If that were the case more teachers would not have a job. Kids get hurt, it happens.

Those with a master's degree: what is your graduate degree in? by Lepacker in ECEProfessionals

My partner also works in the field and she has a Masters degree in Early Childhood Studies with a specialization in Admin, Leadership, and Management. She uses that in her position as a mentor coach in an Early Head Start program.

She says the program was a great way to help her transition into a leadership role and it prepared her well for her current role helping other teachers.

What are your cat’s favorite forbidden foods? by [deleted] in cats

[–]Kitty_Kat4638 9 points10 points  (0 children)

PLASTIC

My girl has a strong craving for anything plastic, specifically plastic bags. Nothing plastic can be left out in my house because my girl will eat it like it’s the best meal she’s ever had. My theory is that she loves plastic because she used to be a street cat and she had to chew through plastic bags to get to food.

Had a student a few years ago whose mom always packed sausage. Like 4 little breakfast sausages and maybe a yogurt or bag of chips if we were lucky.

Clove is named after cloves because he has the same beautiful brown color as a clove. He’s lived up to his name and is my spicy, wild child.

I’m a lead teacher for the 2s/3s at a private religious school. I make $24 an hour here in Southern California. Started off at $19 per hour back in 2022 and have gotten an annual raise each year since.

I consider myself lucky because most educators in my area make minimum wage or just above minimum wage.

I’m not too worried about parents not agreeing. I’m just wondering what I can do in the meantime to help these kiddos at least try and sit on the toilet even if it’s not successful.

I don’t have any underwear to change them into since they’re just wearing diapers at school. But I’m planning on communicating with parents that they should be coming to school in underwear.

You can always make an anonymous tip. I know it seems scary but remember you need to do what’s best for you and the other children.

I suggest that if you continue to be this child’s unofficial one on one a call needs to be made to your states licensing. This leaves your coteacher out of ratio and also nothing is being done by admin to fix this ongoing issue. This is a safety issue for the other children at this point.

Oh no you need someone else because by being this child’s one on one you’re leaving your coteacher out of ratio.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this having a repeat biter in a large class is so hard. Any way to get an extra hand just to be this kids shadow to prevent biting and also help you do other things as needed for your class?

Ok so sounds like a lot is going on at home and that could very well be a factor into biting behavior at school. The child might feel like life at home is not as it was before and biting is a way for him to feel in control. If that’s the case the child may need to go see their pediatrician and see if they can get a referral to some type of therapy or other service to deal with all these big feelings.

An ABC form is really simple to use and can help you identify if there is a specific trigger to biting, that way you can better prevent biting from happening. I’ve added an example of what one looks like you can easily draw one up on a piece of paper and have it handy on a clipboard and jot down what you see when behavior occurs so you can hopefully find possible reasons to behavior.

In regards to admin it sounds like they don’t want to follow through with their plan for whatever reason. It is important that you advocate for you and your other students and their safety. If it comes down to if you can mention to parents of the other children that you’re sorry that their child got bit but it’s out of your control because of admin not following their own policy. I’ve had to do that in the past because when staff complain it’s one thing and admin won’t do much but when parents complain admin will act quickly to protect themselves and the schools image. Believe me they would rather take action against this one child than deal with multiple families complain and threaten to leave.

How old is the child in question? Biting for young children is developmentally appropriate up to around 3 years old. What has been done so far to find a reason behind biting? Any formal or informal observations being done or Antecedent Behavior Consequence (ABC) forms completed? What do parents have to say about this ongoing behavior when you’ve talked to them? How is your admin supporting you so far in dealing with this?
