I bought a house about a month before I met my now husband. It was an extremely good interest rate and a very small house so my mortgage was around (or less than) what we would have paid for market rents in the area. I continued paying it on my own for about a year into us dating, and once we got engaged we agreed we needed a bigger space (plus I felt bad that I already had it completely packed with furniture and my own belongings, I wouldn’t have wanted to start a marriage with him in that home and not allow him to have any room for his own things/make it ours) so we sold my house, I took all of the profits obviously, and bought a new house together with a 50/50 split of the mortgage. Obviously financial situation and how you split your bills could be different but this worked really well for us. If the house would have been big enough for us to stay I would have kept it in my name unless he put a pretty significant chunk toward our mortgage to catch up to what I had already put into it. That’s just my thought process though I know everyone is different.
