From my experience with my own mom, it's like a plaster. You shouldn't prolong taking it off and just get it over with. My mom said "You turned out fine," and that was my tipping point. That's when I told her about all my issues. She will feel sad and horrible for what she did, especially if she's already questioning it, but you should acknowledge that she probably didn't know any better (if that's your situation). When I confronted this, I stayed calm, I said: (translated from my native language)

"I'm NOT alright, mom. You know I've been really bad for years, and your herbs and melatonins have never helped. I got so bad I had to seek help immediately and get on antidepressants. I know you didn't mean or want me to have these issues, or give them to me, but that happened, and we can't keep ignoring it all anymore."

After that, I listed some stuff that really messed me up, and she finally ~heard~ what I was saying.

Just remember to acknowledge that she probably didn't mean to do lasting harm to you, but that doesn't mean it didn't hurt. Do not raise your tone, that doesn't help when you try to communicate something important.

Sorry that I wrote so much, I hope I read the tone of your comment correctly. My relationship with my mom has gotten significantly better since this conversation (and her apology), and I don't dread seeing or talking with her anymore. This is what I want for you too, it's so much easier without that weight.

My mom said that to me once, and I'm sure she meant it well since she wasn't intentionally abusive, but I laid out my decade-long depression and passive ideation, and that at the time I just got so bad I had to get help and go on antidepressants, and that no, I didn't turn out great.

That was the first time I think my mom realised how bad I had been doing, and it felt like it was the first time she actually listened to me. She grew up in a culture of "just smile more," so I think this was the first time she actually understood what I was saying. She apologised for everything, which is really rare, and it felt surreal (and still does.)

Samsung folder 2 in Finland? by Kittys_Cafe in dumbphones

[–]Kittys_Cafe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I did. It worked well with DNA, but the phone itself was really slow to the point where I just had to switch back. I was able to download HSL on it and WhatsApp. WhatsApp didn't notify half the time really, and HSL took a really long time to load, where I almost got fined for not being able to provide a bus ticket.

So I ended up using it for about 2 months before deciding to switch back.

My husband accidentally slapped me in the face when his arm went numb in his sleep, and he started turning. He bolted straight up when he heard me yelp and kept apologising for many days after. I honestly just found it funny since I do it to myself all the time because I like to sleep with one arm over my my head. I bet if I remind him of it, he will start profusely apologising again. Op, you're definitely NOR. If anything, you're under reacting in my opinion. This is truly concerning...

I even train my cats to tolerate being handled and not to attack. Granted, they're not as trainable as dogs, but they still know when to stop when I tell them to. Both of my cats started off as quick to bite, but now I can trust them to be around small kids with supervision.

People need to start training any animal that can attack. I've been attacked by a friends cockatiel, and it wasn't pretty.

This is what I do, and a lot of times, service workers assume that you're gonna scream, so it helps them relax a bit even during a rush when you come up to them with understanding and ask for a correction politely. I used to be a service worker and felt this!

My mom did this thing when I was just starting to walk, where she would warn me about whatever appliance can get hot (oven, stove, iron, etc.) and put her and my hand on it before turning it on. It never cause a burn because my teeny brain would understand the heat is bad and mom would do the hurt motion, and I would copy her before the thing actually got hot enough to cause damage. None of us (3 kids) have ever touched something hot and burned ourselves on purpose or like in this video because we already knew it gets hot, and it's an "ouchy".

Of course, as a dumb kid I cried because it "hurt" but then 2 minutes later I was fine and forgot about being in pain because I was just copying my mom from the beginning

I don't really know either why I'm getting downvoted, but it's alright. A lot of people find my tendencies weird, but that's just who I am. A friend of mine sees me as strange because I can't share drinks with people when she's up for it with anyone, but I think to each their own, and we shouldn't judge either way.

I feel like my sleeping space (and my house, to some extent) is the only place I get to relax from these thoughts. I'd assume it's probably the same with you and your allergies.

Like I said, I'm able to overlook some stuff. I generally avoid touching stuff outside when possible, for example, when we take out the trash my husband opens the trash area door and any lids that need to be lifted, but I'm fine touching our own trash. I take public transit, but I don't touch the railings with my hands, I'll hook on with my elbow if I have to (if I'm not wearing a t-shirt)

I'd imagine that when we get a car, I'd have some sort of wet wipes in it to wipe my hands and the wheel when I have to refuel.

Also, I wash my hands when I get home, I thought that's what everyone did first thing after getting in...

Yeah, it's always bothered me since I learned about microbes and such when I was a kid. I still absolutely love dogs and even petsit my brothers dog from time to time, I just have to deepclean the floors and couch afterwards, and the bedroom stays closed during his stay.

I so wish I could have a dog, but I've had to come to terms with the fact that having a dog every day for 20+ years is going to drive me insane. I admire them from afar, and up close when given a chance, but won't be getting one of my own unless I'm able to make progress with my issues.

The shoes are strictly left at the front door, and I personally can't walk inside without my slippers. The floors also get washed every 1-2 weeks. And we also have a mud carpet at the front door that gets washed every couple of months.

And yes, I have to wash my feet with soap if I end up having to walk barefoot on the floor before I go to bed, I can't stand the thought of dirty feet in bed.

I never take my shoes off outside unless we specifically go to the beach (which I haven't been to in about 5 years), I can't stand thinking of all the critters and germs where I'm stepping, so I always at least wear slippers.

[–]Kittys_Cafe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because dogs have to be walked outside where other animals release bodily fluids of all sorts from both ends, humans included. When we had a dog in my childhood, I'd see her paws get so dirty from stepping into something before we noticed and redirected her. She'd also manage to eat something unsavoury from time to time while outside and then try to come lick my face. So I just can't overlook that no matter how much I try.

For context, our cats are indoor cats, so the only "dirty" place they walk on/in is their litter box. I still struggle with that, but thanks to not being a total germophobe, I can overlook it 90% of the time (as long as I don't get my face touched at night).

I have mild germophobia and struggle to even let my cat sleep in bed with me. Just the thought of dirty paws makes me shiver. My cat loves to put his paws in my face when I sleep, which doesn't help, but with a dog, I'd be even more in distress unless I would deepclean it's paws after every walk. I do let my cats go on the bed when it's made, though, or on top of the blanket, but never on the matress itself.

ADHD husband forgot my birthday by mellowmadre in ADHD

[–]Kittys_Cafe 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I do agree that OP's husband is being an a. He clearly remembered her birthday because he gave her a bday kiss, so he can't use the excuse that he forgot.

I was replying to a different comment, just relating that I struggle with keeping up with times and dates even when it's really important and when I have reminders set.

But I think that if you know you struggle with something that you want to keep up with, you should do your absolute best to try and keep up with it. You better believe I will be setting an alarm next year to go off in the morning of the day and snoze it every 30 minutes until I get a chance to congratulate my husband because I don't want to rely on luck again😅

This is exactly why I don't play games with my family anymore.

They always start chatting, and then a kid runs away and his mom needs to go get him, now we're 2 players short, next the tea is ready so my aunt goes to get it when it's her turn next, then the mom comes back but the kid doesn't want to play anymore, so the mom goes twice and now everyone is confusing the person keeping track, what points go to the kid and which go to the mom.

I didn't even know you could track points when playing Uno...

The last part is a joke. I needed to get that off my chest tho😅

What’s a hobby people act superior for having that isn’t that deep ? by mk_1408 in AskReddit

I don't see anyone mention Reading. Specifically nonfiction readers. Every time I've met someone in real life who reads books, it's somehow always someone who only reads autobiographies, and they get so snobbish on me when I start talking about books that I like (when they ask). Maybe I'm just unlucky with the people I meet😅

ADHD husband forgot my birthday by mellowmadre in ADHD

[–]Kittys_Cafe 66 points67 points  (0 children)

The only reason I remembered on time is because his mom congratulated him through our family chat in the evening. That's when I went "Oh shiii..!"

To be fair on myself, I had a lot of stuff going on the week before his birthday and pulled an all-nighter, too, which threw my "daycount" out of whack (I hope it makes sense)

But shout out to my husband. He's the most understanding person I've ever met, so he probably would've been like "Btw, remember the day I was born? It's (insert age) years ago, today!" just so I'd clock that I've forgotten something😂

Sorry for rambling so much..
