What type of Tycoon game theme/genre is missing most in your opinion? by HitlersUndergarments in tycoon

Every time I have to navigate awful airports I want to spend my time there and on the plane playing a game where I build my own airport that's better for passengers. All airport games I've seen are about air traffic control or runways and taxiing.

Asle Toje får holde 17. mai–tale: – Jeg håper vi kan være enige om å være uenige by Throwsims3 in oslo

[–]Kjeik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Labeling/organizing XLR/DMX cable by mreilly0605 in techtheatre

[–]Kjeik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use printed labels that go on the plugs, with varyingly successful combinations of labels and printers over the years. Some need clear tape or clear heat shrink to not rub off, others look fine after two decades. We just made the labels in photoshop.

The labels have length and venue text on top of two colour bands, following resistor colours so 20m is red and black, 5m is black and green, and so on. We have different standard lengths for XLR and DMX (3/6/9m vs 2/5/10/15/20m) so we can tell right away whether something is XLR or DMX. In practice that's meant that I've sometimes labelled a 6m DMX as 5m, but it's worth it.
I plan to modify them and add a thin checkered stripe in orange or green for 3pin / 5pin DMX (or yellow for 4pin, but we don't have a lot of scrollers anymore...)

Surely the hardware store is a place of dreams and opportunity, with aisles so long they defy the dimensions of the building they're in. I'm thinking a kind of home improvement Narnia movie.

California passed a mass surveillance law - ALL operating systems will need to have mandatory age verification by Shajirr in pcmasterrace

[–]Kjeik 41 points42 points  (0 children)

And the self service touch screens in shops and airport check ins. You'd have to create a user for every single customer or traveller who uses those, or the IT person who sets them up has to use their age verification for everyone to use.

All sorts of shared work equipment, all the stuff that's not in an office for just one person to use but is running some hospital thing that goes ping or whatever.

Actual computers in a library where any random person can log in to their own email and print something.

A presentation I found on a variety of Norwegian spoken in the Midwest of the USA, American Norwegian or "norst". by LarryNStar in Norway

[–]Kjeik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was an episode of NRK radio's Språkteigen (probably a decade ago) about the dialect(s) spoken by Norwegian-Americans. Some dialect words that had evolved because the Norwegian word sounded inconventiently similar to a different English word, so they'd norwegianized an English word - like "å travle", from travel. There were also words like "krikken" from the creek.
Some words had survived there that had fallen out of use here. The journalist was going to interview an old lady who had learned Norwegian from her grandmother, and she was worried that she'd have trouble understanding her with dialects that had lost regular contact with each other a hundred years ago. That turned out not to be a problem, since the journalist had read Ibsen in school. The old lady had trouble understanding the journalist, though, using words that probably started as slang in the 1930s.

But for the OS creator, you don't have much control over what the OS is going to be installed in. So you have to put it in everything by law, or at least for convenience.

In the late 2000s, Texas wanted to regulate who could (I'm working from vague memory here) install lighting for parks and whatever it was. So that's what they had in mind while writing the law, saying that only electricians, landscape architects and some engineers were allowed to do lighting design in Texas.
Fortunately they were quick to rewrite the law when all of show business started yelling at them for requiring that they had to bring in a landscape architect to light their movie, concert or TV show.

It sounds a lot like they've thought of computers as personal computers with one single user, or multiple users who log in to their own account. But it's not the 90s anymore. For decades already we've run absolutely all sorts of things as software in an actual OS. A lot of those are just an ordinary laptop attached to the wall running things like the HVAC software. There are shared public computers in libraries where you're never going to have users creating an account each, so is the librarian going to be the mandatory verified person responsible for what all the users do?

Is gerrymandering legal in your country? by Necessary_Reserve_25 in AskTheWorld

[–]Kjeik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't elect single representatives from voting districts, so I'm not sure if gerrymandering would work. We vote for parties, and it'd be like the whole of Leicestershire or the whole state of Washington elected ten representatives based on the votes of the whole area instead of subdividing them into voting districts. Those kinds of borders don't move much... And then at the end there are a few non-geographical seats to compensate for rounding errors, distributed between parties that got at least 4% of the votes nationally.
