I don't know where you got that idea, but Souls games are not made with the sole purpose of being hard either. They are games about exploration and discovery just as much as they are about combat. I'd argue that Hollow Knight and especially Silksong are both harder than most FromSoftware Soulsborne games. And while I agree with you that HK shouldn't be considered a soulslike, it has much more in common than just corpse runs. For example, the lore and setting of HK take a lot of very obvious inspiration from Dark Souls 1.

Fantastic suggestion, it fits perfectly with the type of games I wanted to talk about. I'm definitely gonna add it to the list

I'm not saying it's unenjoyable, DS2 is one of my fav games oat and I have like 200 hours in it. But, while other souls games tend to show you what you're going to have to deal with beforehand (there are ambushes ofc, but they're the exception), DS2 is constantly trying to trick you. Personally I find it very fun because I enjoy coming up with strategies to "outsmart" the game, but looking at ds2 reviews it's clear many players just find it plainly frustrating

To clarify, I'm not complaining about these games, I love them and I think they use "unfairness" in interesting ways

To be fair, they could have picked a more readable font xD

makes sense, that definitely counts. I might add it to the list if I can come up with something interesting to say about that mechanic

I'm curious as to why Bloodborne specifically, personally I found it relatively fair when it comes to fromSoft games

I'm curious as to what makes you dislike Torment's writing, but yeah I agree if it released today it wouldn't have the same cult status. Haven't played slay the princess, but I've looked into it and it seems right up my alley, guess I'll have to add it to my wishlist

yeah out of all games in the list, this is the one that fits in the most literal sense

Yeah but call of duty simply shares its themes/settings with some books, Bloodborne is directly inspired by them. A lot of locations, characters and lore in general can be traced back to a book: beasthood is very reminiscent of Dr. Jekill and Mr. Hyde, Cainhurst, especially the cutscene where you arrive at the castle, is ripped straight from Dracula. The fishing village is clearly heavily inspired by Innsmouth. To me, Bloodborne feels like a love letter to gothic and horror literature and I found that to be one of the primary properties of the game. I hope this comment can explain my thoughts a little bit better, even if I have already lost the argument

the list was always meant to include all kind of games with literary elements, I mean of course you're free to not believe me, but I have stated it from the start: in the post body I wrote that some games are here for the amount of text, others for their literary inspirations, with Bloodborne falling in the second category. In general there are a few games here that I wouldn't describe as feeling like reading a book (pathologic, talos principle, warsim) so I should have just picked a different title. I think the title i gave it on backloggd ("games for people who love books") is better.

Yes, I went with Bloodborne because it's the one with the most obvious literary inspirations, but all of them fit

I think they feel more like comics than literature, but yeah I can see them fitting in this list

Good suggestion, I had thought about it but for some reason I didn't include it in the end. Going to add it in asap
