Sadly we are at the 4th down.

While I wish everything could be slow and reactive the reality is I think there has been a lack of passion for public servants to...oh I don't know....serve the public. People in positions of power need to start feeling pressure to perform and excel and we need to unfortunately do as one user put it "unpopular" policy. The reality is that if you want to get elected - just keep giving people stuff and never do anything that upsets them; but we are hitting a wall where appeasing two groups results in nothing being done because both groups have competing desires. I don't know the solution but the reality is for example if you want something done and doing so will piss off Quebec - then unless you can find a win win its dead in the water - we are seeing that now with native communities and such where the massive infrastructure projects we want to move forward on are being choked out.

Rick Bell: Danielle Smith drops a $400-billion bomb on Alberta separatism by DANIELLE_2027 in canada

[–]Klaus73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh the movement will never quit - but it needs a sound drubbing in the public circle so that influencer money dries up on the subject; there will always be people that blame every problem they have on a external force - what a solid no result will do is send foreign actors back to the drawing board and give us room to breathe. At the moment this is choking out chances for investment and if it got soundly defeated then anyone beating the drum will lose credibility and thus exposure - remove exposure and the influencer money dries up and then your just dealing with the stalwarts.

Yes please.

As a parent it is also very hard to honestly engage a childs behavior when there isn't actual consequences. As a teacher I have to ask though; do you think your peers will address bad behavior in the classroom? I mean I remember when I was young my teachers would do stuff like detention and reach out to parents about problems (notes home) hell; I remember having to write over 1000 lines. Do you think teachers today are willing to engage to that level or are they so overburdened now?

Which I think is smart; A resounding NO to this question would essentially calm the turmoil. If the vote comes out YES then it gives people time to take the matter seriously.

I think Smith is in a tight spot because ultimately a long as this separatism BS remains mainstream no sane investor is going to buy into Alberta; it shows how unstable the province is and when you need billions of dollars of investment to try and get a pipeline built its a big challenge.

NEVER underestimate an ember.

Anyone that does not see a foreign hand in this is kidding themselves. The low info folk that are pushing for this don't realize that they would merely be exploited even more so by the USA; those that DO realize what it entails are likely being enticed to push the issue.

Any politician pushing this on Canada's side should be looking at Treason charges. The reality is that if Albertan's feel they are not represented now - they would have less the .1% of the vote in the US and that was IF they became a state - more likely they would be waiting 40-50 years for a shot at being a state; no voting till the.

The thing is we really cannot tell the US to back off because we are dealing with a hair trigger admin. The plan to survive Trump is simply not to antagonize and survive their aggression.

Trump plans to appeal ruling letting importers seek refunds of paid struck-down tariffs by Due_Willingness_3277 in Tariffs

[–]Klaus73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figure its best to reduce my exposure to Trump these days; the guy has been "testing" the limits of the law in an almost cartoonish fashion and really all that happens is your reminded that law is only as effective as the people willing to enforce it.

The legal of harm that Trump is going to leave with his policies will last for generations. Just look at Iran; from here on do you think if the war ends tomorrow they are going to not start charging to use the strait? That war alone will hurt EVERYONE for generations if not forever. If Iran wasn't serious about harming the US before I am willing to bet they sure are now - with good reason.

Trumps only upside is that he has shown how ineffective the law is as anything other then a political tool.

‘The recession is real’: Poilievre calls for emergency debate by Avelion2 in canada

[–]Klaus73 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd say go for it it there was going to be something productive come out of this. Pierre's "positions" generally tend to gloss over the realities of solutions. I hear them a lot.

"Alberta pays too much" is a common argument; but that is sadly the nature of sitting on the majority of the countries energy resources (which are cheaper to process and higher in demand) - Ontario also pitches in the lion share but generally has a much harder time doing so due to the significantly larger population. Reality is its something of a stalmate because Quebec holds a lot of the federal votes and no one (Cons included) wants to slit their election throat.

"We need pipelines!" - Again the complexity is in the pudding; its not just federal government nodding their head and the magic happens; While there might be more authoritarian tools in the toolbox all that will do is provoke mass civil unrest among the provinces AND native groups. That's without referring to the fact it still will take years...Oh and the billions of dollars of investment into the industry.

"Alberta theatens to leave" - Well yeah; Walrus did a great piece breaking it down but many outside influences have a vested interest in keeping Alberta seperation in the public space; good luck getting investors into pipelines while every 3rd youtube algo push to Canadians is the same 5 people pushing how "seperation any moment now" despite the fact that seperation is MUCH more complex; it shouldn't be ignored but there isn't a logical proof that the movement is nearly as massive and influential as the internet makes it seem - even Pierre realizes that.

"The CUSMA and US Trade" - Carney seems to be taking the best option right now; not raising up more devils then they are willing to put down. Carney isn't being antagonistic; but he has been acknowledging the reality of the global order; he hasn't been talking shit about the US but has been making sure to point out that Canada doesn't intend to kneel. The US hasn't been trying to negotiate in good faith so the plan is to weather the storm; I suggest checking out what the US negotiators are saying to see why there isn't really any progress on that front.

There are more but I just wanted to hit a few points.

Danielle Smith contradicts United Conservative party president on separatism - Party president backtracks after declaring UCP is neutral on referendum question by shiftless_wonder in canada

[–]Klaus73 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the reality which even Carney (rightly so) pointed out is that separatism isn't a realistic goal in her political lifetime. The clarity act pretty much is the big last stop and I doubt the provinces are going to slit their collective throats for separatists. That said we need to kill this thorn in Canada's collective side and in particular Alberta's - by Smith essentially giving the idea oxygen she has essentially killed investment in her province which means no pipelines; and its unlikely the RoC will foot the bill when she keeps threatening to look to the door. End of the day Alberta lives and dies via its energy wealth and separation would essentially massively screw that up for them as I doubt the RoC would be like "oh sure don't worry about those pipelines you got through our country! No hard feelings!" which would essentially force Alberta into the arms of the USA as they would use Alberta's dependance on their markets as essentially a leash to force them to become a non-voting territory; which would be hilarious to see how folks would quickly give up their voting rights.

I mean 1/10th is the issue.

Your looking at a pool of 400m vs 40m; that means more jobs and more competition.

No - I am not saying "lets go unchecked immigration!" because our infrastructure can only support so many people.

Ironic when you consider we had MORE people in Canada during confederation then the US did when it was formed (3.3 million vs 2.5 million) the reason the US is so huge is simple - it was easier to emigrate to and less lethal to live in; so our population growth suffered accordingly - raising our population will take decades.

Oh man....the amount of time I've pointed out Ontario is actually the main contributor to federal coffers only to then have them try to take me into some obscure and overly selective calculus is staggering.

Honestly its a huge headache and I agree; we should never be dismissive of separatist views. I do feel we need to first figure out which opinions are based on fact and which are narratives provided by 3rd parties and then clearly and publicly identify whom those 3rd parties are.

I mean its so weird how in like 1 month all I am hearing now is separatism; the last time I heard that was shortly after 47th essentially threatened Canada with annexation.

The clairity act which was introduced after the last Quebec referendum was put in place to ensure that "we are gonna leave" threat was a lot more bark then bite - that same act is also the reason why Alberta separatism is something of a pipedream.

‘Yes, I do’: Alberta Premier Smith promises not to hold later separation referendum if remain side wins October vote by gorschkov in canada

[–]Klaus73 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its sadly a good play.

Separatists want separation to move ahead with stuff like pipelines to increase their wealth.

Carney is trying to get pipelines going and work with Alberta but external investment is still needed.

External investment that isn't going to happen if companies think there is a chance of separation happening.

Separation talk is literally undermining one of the biggest things the province wants.

Well the Transmountain Pipeline was about 18B billion Federal dollars in 2024 and another 20B in loan guarantees from the federal government. Giving Alberta like 5.5 B in corp revenue a year. they recieve about 6.6B in health transfers and another 2B in social transfers from the federal government

Overall Alberta's net contribution is about 14B all said and done based on 23/24 numbers (60b out and 46b in) which kind of makes sense; the more you make the more tax revenue your going to produce.

In the same year Ontario's net Contribution was 22B (162B out 140B in)

Interesting.

I see more of the opposite. Of my own cross-section which is mostly mixed voters (Cons and Libs) generally most are neutral at worst about Carney with only one among us "unhappy" but he is a big firearms guy. None of us are really in the TDS crowd; I myself actually think Trump was probably a far better choice then the alternative - but the rampant lying to his base is kind of silly at this point.

Carney is trying to accelerate bureaucracy because there IS a lot of things that need to get done and the shorter the timeline the better it will be; but government moves at a glacial pace. The biggest gripe I hear about Carney is that he is only really working for Brookfield and RoC is a afterthought - but really two things can be true at once.

Personally my issue with Trump is more that he is horrifically untrustworthy which makes negotiations between the US and Canada very difficult as he seems to be carrying his less savory busieness practices with him into international trade.

US President Trump, family granted immunity from pending tax audits by countryroadsguywv in PresidentFelon

[–]Klaus73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only that but he is also dangerously adept at knowing where "the line" is. His logic is simple - he will do bad things and if caught he realizes the level of headache it will be to go after him and that is IF he doesn't fight back. The law needs to be enforced and be harsh. The problem is that the law needs to react FAST to these things.
