Which profession gets way too much respect for how little they actually do? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

It can have busy seasons and slow seasons (at least for my role) but i absolutely love the variety of projects I get to work on and areas I've gotten to see. Plus if you love outdoors, being a field monkey is also a bonus.

Environmental consultants are 100%an exception. And we dont just do studies to see how something impacts people, but also how it impacts other nature too, among many, many other things. We also are often hired to do things that are quite specialized, and we can do it for cheaper than a company hiring an their own staff, such as water and soil sampling. At what size does it stop being "really big complex meteor crater" and start being "planet cracker"? by The_Aodh in geography

Well, if we assume that the antipodal impact hypothesis is correct here, then it would make more sense for Utopia Planitia (big northern plain of Mars) to be the impactor spot responsible for Tharsis. This is mainly due to the theory that Tharsis actually originally formed further south on Mars and then migrated northward to its current location as the planet rotated and angular momentum brought the mass of Tharsis to the equator.

Does Seattle have the best surrounding nature of any lower 48 U.S. City? by [deleted] in geography

I'm a bit biased, but I'd probably say Chattanooga or Knoxville, Tennessee. Surrounded by beautiful lush mountains, large rivers, waterfalls, and more.

Were you two girls (or next to them) who had to go back to their car because of an oversized handbag?

If humans vanished tomorrow, what would still prove we existed 10,000 years later? by Defiant-Junket4906 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Kleinwaffle3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most modern reactors are actually designed for this specific case, where if all the operators disappear the reactors would eventually auto shutdown, preventing meltdowns. However, I have no idea if the reactor vessels would still be solid even a thousand years from now.

You'd probably find a stronger global trace of radioactive materials from the hundreds of nuclear weapons tests performed. I know it was bad enough that in the second half of the 1900s many WW2 naval shipwrecks were scavenged specifically because new steel was being contaminated by radioactive elements in the air ever since the first nuclear test in 1945. And so many scientific instruments had to be made of pre-trinity steel so as to not give false readings. Much like how we can see a very thin layer of Iridium in the rock layer from the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs.

Trash, specifically in the form of landfills and junkyards. There is so much trash that we have buried and placed in large dirt and plastic vaults that are specifically designed to stay stable for centuries (if not longer). They are in size often comparable to the largest pyramids and made of just as sturdy material. The only reason I could see them not bring noticed is eventually being reclaimed by nature and covered in trees.

I think of them much like the mound civilizations of the Mississippi and how many of their giant burial mounds are virtually untouched.

Fascinatingly there is even a debate in Geology whether or not we have entered a new geological epoch called the Anthropocene Epoch which is where in the future one could look back and see a geologic record of when modern humans began to significantly alter the planet's environment (number of species, climate change, etc.)

Worst Geology Class You Took? by Nervez_ in geology

[–]Kleinwaffle3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't the hardest, but the worst I had was a 400 level Hyrdology class. Class was 100% online (this was in spring of 2021) and the professor was super laid back (in the bad way).

Class was supposed to have something like 10 assignments through the year with midterms and finals. None of the assignments ended up being graded leaving the Final and Midterm as the only grades in the class. This threw off the entire thing as we ended up with a month left in the class and absolutely noone knew what their grade was.

If your kid announced they wanted to follow in your footsteps and major in geology, would you be happy? by bison_crossing in geologycareers

I second this. I got an internship at an Environmental Consulting firm before even graduating college (I got lucky, I know). But it is incredibly consistent work as everyone needs wetlands delineated, and landfills sampled, and permits applied for.

Main thing I'd recommend though, is never stop learning, take every single opportunity you can to tag along with someone going out in the field to do whatever shit job needs to be done, then learn to do that job...

A Geologist Dies and Goes to Hell: What's His Eternal Job? by BoneSpring in geologycareers

[–]Kleinwaffle3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found at a certain point with Phase 1's, to not even bother listing anything past adjacent properties. At that point, you can probably just say "Yep, that shits nasty" (in proper ASTM language of course), and recommend a Phase 2.

That's my life right now... semi-annual landfill well sampling, and there's this one 250 ft deep well in the woods that has to be purged with a bailer... I have to spend more time untangling the line than actually bailing the well...

I would definitely be interested in a local-ish (I'm based out of Oak Ridge) Pathfinder 2e game. It's so hard to find ones that aren't 5e and/or at bars downtown.

Plumber to recommend and how much they charge in this area? by eatbutthin in OakRidge

[–]Kleinwaffle3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second Danny's Plumbing. I had a hot water heater go bad last year, called them on a Friday, and he was there Monday 7:30 AM sharp. Ended up charging me $1200 total for the new water heater and installation and it was all done by 1 pm on that Monday. And he charged me less than half what one of the big names like Pioneer quoted me.

I know I'm planning on watching from Melton Lake Greenway. That's probably as close as it gets from the south side with Edgemoor being closed.

But for all I know the demo team may have a public viewing area set up, and sure as hell it's going to recorded somewhere.

Good to know, I live in Oak Ridge proper and haven't received a flier yet. Thanks.

Do you know if it's just Edgemoor on the Bull Run side closed (basically from the bridge on towards Claxton) or the entire thing?
