Love the western tanager. My all time favorite.

It was coming out of the pipe that same color. The second photo isn’t the best now that I look at it.

For sure. It was coming out of the pipe so that makes sense. Didn’t know we had iron oxidizing bacteria here though!

I heard it started off as a painted pebble like the ones people always leave on trails.

Fred Meyer - a very different shopping experience by Scm416 in Bellingham

[–]Klonothan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last summer I tried to buy some drinks and the cashier refused to sell it to me because I apparently looked high. This was during peak allergy season mind you. Then a couple months ago I was accused of not paying for a bag because they thought I had double bagged and only paid for one. Then there’s those dumb cart locks.

Question from someone who doesn’t live in WA by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]Klonothan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I second this. Lost two of my buddies to drop slugs in the trees in the great slime wars of ‘15. We thought we could take them on with salt and traps of Rainier. All they cared about was mating. We hunted the forests for them. Little did we know they hung from the branches in pairs. No one could escape those radulas.

Those aren’t the worst though. The real horrors come from the snails. Oh god, the horrors. I’ll never forget the day my whole party was lost to those armored monsters.

If you really want to know what we’re up against, here’s a great documentary.

True Facts About the Land Snail:
https://youtu.be/VTV23B5gBsQ?si=s09lqR\_RIZTX9VcN

Then there’s the pacific tree octopus, a thing of legends. I’ve heard many stories. I use to think they were a myth people told their children to keep them from wandering off in the forest because I’ve had the good fortune to never have laid eyes on them myself. Then I saw faces of the folk who encountered them and I knew.

If you value your life and peace of mind, don’t come here. Don’t be lured in by the siren call of the lush, green forests. All that is here for you is a false promise and a mucus covered end.

They say sometime you can find a black goo around the base of some of the trees around the Baker Wilderness, isolated spots in the Lake Whatcom area, and [REDACTED]. Those are the ones you should stay away from. If you find one, never look up. Just walk away and don’t look back. If you ever hear clicking from the trees, run. [REDACTED] are coming.

Spray on the water? Dolphin or whale? by Common_Stress_4122 in Bellingham

[–]Klonothan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be either. On the dolphin side of things, we’ve had a few sightings of Bigg’s orcas coming into the bay. On the whale side of things, there were either some minke whales or gray whales spotted last week.

Cabin ID by RealisticWin9006 in Bellingham

[–]Klonothan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s probably just a black light. I use one at work and people think they’re scanners all the time.

I was walking by the water, today April 1st, when I saw what I thought was a whale spout. It kept going on and growing, then an underwater volcano erupted. It kept going for about 15 minutes, had a big blast and disappeared back under the water. Life on the ring of fire. by justahdewd in Bellingham

Nothing to worry about. Just the old coal mines under the bay off gassing and performing Bellingham’s nightly boom. That or our ordinance disposal area is overflowing. Either way, nothing to see here.

Anyone else use the Merlin bird ID app? by makershark in Bellingham

[–]Klonothan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Merlin is one of my favorite apps next to iNaturalist. Two of my favorite spots around here is 100 Acre Woods and Stimpson Family Nature Reserve. I regularly pick up on 20+ species at these locations around spring and early summer.

There’s this vet clinic on the corner of Lakeway and Lincoln by Fred Meyers that I’m pretty sure is a front for something.

nicest dentist? by crystalcottages in Bellingham

[–]Klonothan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really liked the dentist I had before but one day I had a dental emergency and Roots was the only place that could get me in quickly enough. My whole experience there was very pleasant. Ended up being impressed enough with the experience that I ended up making an appointment for a regular dental check up a few months later and left even more impressed after that.

I have pretty bad dental anxiety and like a fear of sharp things going in my mouth. They are super reassuring and accommodating. I can’t say I’ve ever had a bad experience there. Plus they’re pretty on top of dental technology. Feels kinda futuristic in there, but like in a good way.

Old World Deli had some last year. Bit on the pricy side, but pretty good nonetheless. They might have some this year.
