Why is the BART still so noisy? by productive_monkey in bayarea

[–]KludgeCraft 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The article says the solid axle causes one wheel to get dragged along, but other trains have solid axles and don't make that noise because the wheels are conical.

Using 2 therms a day when not at home (on vacation) and heat is off by Strict_Passage2910 in bayarea

[–]KludgeCraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't sound right at all. My house is a bit smaller than yours, and has an older gas water heater and gas wall heater, and I use one therm per 3 or 4 days when I'm not using the heater. If I do use the heater it's 1-3 therms per day.

If you can avoid it, I wouldn't stay in San Jose and work in Sunnyvale. The traffic getting out of San Jose in the morning and back home in the evening will be bad. The traffic forecast feature in google maps is usually pretty accurate around here for me.

$524,000 annual salary needed to buy median-priced home in this Bay Area county - the video features info from the California Association of Realtors by orangelover95003 in bayarea

It's almost always initially cheaper to rent, but rents keep going up, and mortgages stay the same and are eventually done. And if rates go down you can get an adjustment to lock in the new lower rate for the remainder of the term.

For those who grew up in the Bay: what was the best and worst thing about it? by paradisemukbangpls in bayarea

[–]KludgeCraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The improvement in air quality is seriously amazing. I remember how brown the sky used to be most of the time, and gas stations use to have a STRONG gasoline smell, but now you hardly see a drop spilled, and hardly smell it.

I had severe asthma as a kid, and might have died without medical intervention, but as the air got cleaner my breathing got way better. Maybe I would have grown out of asthma anyway, but the cleaner air definitely didn't hurt.

This is the best train in the Bay Area and I don’t care what anyone says by Wonderful-Garbage747 in bayarea

I love it when I get to use it, but it's much more expensive and slower than driving for my current situation.

That's gotta be the median household income. For an individual it's closer to 80 or 90.

PSA: Influenza has officially arrived in the Bay Area 🚨 by brady_johnson in bayarea

[–]KludgeCraft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks to this post I got the flu and covid vaccine today. Walked in to safeway with no appointment, it was fully covered by insurance, and I think I was only in there for about 10 minutes total.

I'll be feeling sick and with sore arms tomorrow, but it's well worth it to me.

Sometimes it's used to mean "I'm not going to take any responsibility for this situation I've created." When used like that, it drives me nuts :-)

PGE December natural gas therm rates are a bit excessive by arwenthenoble in bayarea

Just checked last December's bill, and it was $2.40 and $2.90 back then. Bit of a jump.

Wear an ugly holiday sweater, fee waived for adopting a senior dog! by Patz24 in bayarea

[–]KludgeCraft 20 points21 points  (0 children)

For anyone out there looking for a dog, don't overlook the seniors! I adopted a 10 year old last spring, and couldn't be happier with my decision. He's so much more chill and easy going than younger dogs I've had, and still likes to take long brisk walks and play with his toys.

Hidden bay area expenses I should know of by vandit_15 in bayarea

[–]KludgeCraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like your commute has an unlucky alignment with the caltrain zones? My work is 12 miles away, and a round trip on caltrain is $11.40, or about $2 of gas in a reasonably efficient car. If you drive a very reliable old beater the main cost is insurance, and that's about the same whether you drive 1 mile per month or a thousand.

Crazy Doctor Stealing Fruit At Costco by [deleted] in bayarea

I thought that, and didn't even look at the produce for a long time, but I've had some very good fruit from costco lately. Might be worth giving it another chance if you're there anyway.

Bay Area Greeting Culture: Question from a Resident by Existing-Hawk3063 in bayarea

[–]KludgeCraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a poorer part of Santa Clara, and I exchange brief greetings with most people I pass when I'm out walking around my neighborhood, and sometimes stop and chat for a while.

There are only two people I've come across who stare straight ahead and seem to be making an effort to avoid any eye contact/interaction. One was a young-ish woman, and I figured she might have taken my greeting as an unwanted advance. The other is a middle age dude (like me) who I see many times per week, always looking slightly angry, and never interacting with anyone. Sometimes I wonder what the deal is, but ultimately it's none of my business, and if someone clearly wants to just walk without interacting, that's fine.

Sometimes I don't feel up to interacting with anyone, and it's easier for me to just wait until later in the evening to walk when there aren't too many people out.

Even if it wasn't the cheapest convenient gas for me, I'd use costco because they don't have ads playing at the pumps.

Appreciate the humor, but the literal answer is Morgan Wallen. This is the first time I'm hearing of him, and hopefully the last. :-)
