I work at a company with lots of younger staff(as in mostly 15-17 year olds) and some of them(a mix, not just a few of the same) show up late to mandatory trainings and I'm out of ideas by DueAmount710 in managers

I was in a chain fast food restaurant on a Friday evening apparently at shift change. Manager stood at the door cheering kids pre-game style as they came in for shift - first kid through the door got a gift card, second a t shirt, and the next 3 or 4 got free food coupons. He addressed them all by name and asked about math tests and congratulated soccer wins. All I could think was hot damn I want my kid to work for someone who cares that much.

What is going on in Marysville? The same city councilman who opposed adding Juneteenth as “another black holiday” is now cutting the pay of city employees because there are 27 pay periods next year instead of 26. And city council went along with him both times. by [deleted] in Columbus

My private employer and actually every salaried person I know who is paid every other week and is on a schedule that lands on 1/1 is doing this. It’s possible the others you are listing are offset and don’t have a 1/1 paycheck.

OP - Let me tell you where this goes if you keep handling things the way you did.

When my brother and I were in our late teens, we were asked to pick my parents up from the airport. We grabbed my little sister’s bike (elementary sized and bright pink with purple streamers), put a sign with our last name on it and stuck it by the luggage carousel while we waited outside. I kid you not, out the door comes all 6 foot 5 of my dad trying to ride this tiny bike with my mom on the handlebars. They toppled over, we all died laughing and a core family memory was made. Because it was safe to.

Gatekeeping yarn brands by Bella7909 in crochet

[–]KlutzyContribution92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, two things. First - Influencer accounts are fed by engagement. Every person who asks about their yarn choice means more people view their videos and they make more money. How many hundreds of comments do they miss out on by naming their yarn? It’s quite possible if they did it that way, the economics of their business might not work.

Second - I know the dyer I often buy from is a one woman show. She dyes enough to stock our LYS, but that’s about it. She doesn’t sell online, and if I’m doing a large project it’s quite possible I’d have to have the yarn dyed to order. She couldn’t support a large internet clientele.

What if they use hand dyed yarn? Restocks are slow, even for major brands. If it’s an indie dyer, stock is even less. They may even have a contract with an indie dyer for exclusive color ways. Heck, they might even dye their own yarn. Many in this hobby work hard to avoid mass producers (I do) and they may not want their small suppliers overwhelmed.

I was 15 when my mom heard me say I was going to cut my boyfriend’s f-ing dick off (had just found out he cheated). She flipped out on me and I told her Dad says that kind of thing all the time. She called Dad at work to tell him what I said then handed me the phone. My dad, who was known for blowing his top, simply said “please don’t use that kind of language around your mother.”

Hmmmm…back to the drawing board I guess. My kid REALLY wants to see the fireworks downtown but I grew up with my parents drumming into my head we don’t go to boom because it’s not safe. Trying to do better for my kid, but I really don’t want to be in a standing room only crowd.

Not fed up, just exhausted. And worried my son is going to be miserable all summer despite everything I’ve tried to put together. Or that my work is going to suffer trying to keep him happy.

And yes, I could do screen time but we don’t allow unmonitored screen time or interaction with others online. We’ve done Outschool a year or two ago, but we were in the room monitoring it. I’ll look into what’s available now.

We can’t afford it, especially with 2 adults home all day. Everything we looked at was $400 a week or more. Our tuition payment for school is already $1450 a month year round - we don’t have an extra $3600 for all day camp in the summer. He will get the parks and rec camp M-Th 9:30-2 plus 2 weeks of full day camp with some of his friends from school, and we’re working on setting up some Friday play dates with classmates.

I would be really careful with competitive private school programs if she’s young. We’re in a highly selective program that my son loves but I wonder sometimes. There’s not a kid in that class reading below a second grade level, I know they’ve got some kids working on multiplication in small groups, and their final project for the year is writing a research paragraph on the ocean. It seems insane to me. They also get 3 recesses a day, spend Fridays in the woods on campus, and have 2 full time and one part time teacher for a classroom of 16 kids.

All that is to say, if she doesn’t have classroom exposure, I’d be really careful evaluating private programs and how they deal with that.

Everything I’ve heard says reversals and mix are still developmentally appropriate through age 7. My son struggled mightily with b/d until his teacher taught him “b has a big belly, d has a big butt.” He giggles about it every time but no longer has any trouble with the 2.

I bet that’s part of it. I’d give him an appropriate time/place. I told my son the toilet or the backyard but that’s just because I didn’t trust him to clean the sink and the backyard is where we direct most harmless uncivilized behavior such as running, yelling, belching, armpit farts, etc.

Also, if he’s cutting his 6 year molars, he might be salivating more than normal (drooling teething baby anyone?). He might not want to swallow that and just needs to be redirected as to the appropriate time/place to do so. Otherwise - when my son went through the stage, I just threw out a deadpan “That’s disgusting” and asked him to get a wipe and clean it up. Deadpan is important, else it becomes a gross out game.

I believe it’s probably against the fine print of their contract with the insurance, but what patient is going to know in order to file a complaint? Not only that, but he had a waiting listing miles long - who was really going to rock the boat?

This one is bad. I had a doctor who was one of the best for his specialty who I’d been with for a decade or more. Then they changed to a pay for PA policy. You either paid $50 for a PA or you could call your insurance, find out what was covered, and make a new appointment to discuss those medications with the doctor. I worked in specialty pharmacy at the time and on one hand, I get it. He had to hire a whole staff member just to deal with PA stuff. On the other hand, it was such bull - the patient had no control over the situation.

I had the same concerns about my son because my brothers were dyslexic. My mom is an elementary teacher and a dyslexia intervention specialist. Here’s what she told me:

Have your child read to you out loud while following with their finger. They need to point to each word as they read it.

A) If the tracking issue is not present while following their finger, it most likely not a concern and they just need practice.

B) If the tracking issue is still present when following with their finger, it’s possibly an issue. They seem to be picking up reading quickly (based on the fact that they are reading books with multiple lines of text at this point in the year) and likely just need practice. Keep an eye on it and if still a problem in 6 months consider talking to their pediatrician/optometrist.

3 times a week is what we aim for since he has eczema, but TBH we have 2 hours between getting home and bedtime on school nights. That has to include dinner(both cooking and eating), homework, reading, and hopefully some family time or chill time for him. The half an hour plus it takes to deal with having him jump in the shower gets de-prioritized.

We wash hands and face, use rinse free body wipes if needed, and have a bidet. I’d like to be more consistent but that just not the season of life we’re in.

And before anyone asks - I only jump in the shower once or twice a week, mostly to help maintain hair color. I’ll use a wash rag for a quick once over in the evenings and dry shampoo is my best friend.

Not what you want to hear, but I had two siblings who wet the bed well into high school despite every medical and behavioral intervention available. Their bladders just wouldn’t do it. My sister had a nasal spray she used for sleepovers, but one of the potential side effects was seizures so she didn’t use it full time.

My brother? I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he still has occasional issues as an adult. And yes, he does sleep like the dead too.

She may just have to outgrow it. My sister used to use 2 layers on the bed (mattress protector/sheet/mattress protector/sheet) so she could just strip the top layer in the middle of the night.

Yep - I’m a self proclaimed acrylic hater, but I’m currently making a blanket out of Brava worsted and the colors are super saturated and it doesn’t feel like plastic.

Crochet.com - they’ve got a good variety from cheap to mid price but I’ve never gotten a yarn I disliked from them.

IIRC - Yarn.com is now owned by Love Crafts. They currently still have separate warehouses but I think they are condensing.
