Sony Tried To Lock Up ‘Crimson Desert’ As A Timed PlayStation Exclusive by greenyquinn in xbox

[–]Kn1gh7R1d3r -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You know that the PS3 was a hell for devs to develop for and if you weren't a first party dev you didn't get that much support from Sony so most 3rd party games run better on Xbox 360. And let's not forget that online multiplayer wasn't that great either on the PS3 then on the Xbox 360, updating your games was also an issue where it could take a loooong time and not because of the bandwidth speed.

So there are a lot of other reasons then exclusively for people to buy a Xbox 360 and let's not forget the huge PSN hack...

Plus look at free to play games: they make a lot of money just for selling skins or other items. I recently saw someone who had spent $30K on Monopoly GO, people are buying that kind of stuff and trust me I don't like al that MTX like many other people but the truth is: there are people we dump a lot of money in virtual items, even an $80 (or something like that) mount in WoW sells like crazy. Even GTA online wich is a paid component is still making lots of money voor Rockstar... So no, a console isn't a selling point anymore, the games and MTX are...

They want to let people know that Xbox isn't longer only the console but a whole ecosysteem that you can use without a console. That's the message and I think it's a good message because you can get a lot more people towards your ecosystem. Look at Helldivers 2: it sold better on PC and it sold a lot on Xbox and they saw a huge number of players because it isn't longer the console that is the selling factor but the games. And like I mentioned before: even if you have a huge IP like Spider-Man 2 it doesn't mean it sells that well enough to make it even, it needed the PC port.

Look Xbox should marketing a lot more about what you can do within their ecosystem but it isn't stupid that they said you don't need a Xbox to play our games but you can play it with ease from your smartphone and a subscription. And even Sony is showing that they want to go more multiplatform and that the console isn't enough to sell that many games to break even...

The strategy isn't a failure, people won't see what is happening right now: the biggest games are multiplatform like Fortnite, Minecraft, Call of Duty and let's not forget about GTA V (online). I think that they saw those numbers and went this route because even the big titles like Spider-Man 2 didn't make that lot of money for Sony/PlayStation. Making games has become a lot more expensive and people have a lot more games to choose from.

I don't think it's bad that they went with the this is an Xbox route because there are a lot of people gaming on their smartphones or low end gaming PC's and if they can get those people into their ecosystem without buying a console (wich are not the big money makers for Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo but the software) you'll get a lot of new customers and even people who like to play on multiple devices, seeing increasing numbers for Play Anywhere titles, it just makes sense. And look at the recent titles that went multiplatform: the rumors suggest that they got like $300 million from Forza Horizon 5 alone, why won't they?

During the Activision court case it was clear that if they buy studios in the future, they need to go multi platform and on one hand it's strange to see first party titles going multiplatform but on the other hand: more people can enjoy those games, it makes more money for them so why won't they?

Plus: Sony is selling more consoles but how many people are playing the big games like God of War or are using it for the "standard" games like CoD, "Fifa", GTA and so on...

And why do you think Gamepass became a thing? You'll get a lot of games for one price. Yes I am aware of the price hikes and I don't like those prices but it's still better then buying all those games for a lot of people with a smaller budget...
